The 40 Most Read Books of the 2023 Goodreads Reading Challenge (So Far)

Time once again, gentle readers, for our midyear check-in on the Goodreads Reading Challenge, in which readers push themselves by pledging to read a set number of books for the year. Lots of activity this time around! Six million participants and more than 250 million books pledged?! Crazy numbers!
We’ve collected below the most popular books completed so far in this year’s Reading Challenge. That is to say, the books that people are marking "read" as part of this year's Challenge.
There are a few clear takeaways here at the halfway point. As is typical, the list tends to favor a few Very Popular Authors, each of whom has multiple individual books clocking in. For instance, Colleen Hoover, Taylor Jenkins Reid, and Sarah J. Maas. Romance continues to be a popular genre in the Challenge, but you’ll find other specimens, too: domestic thrillers, inventive fantasy, giant octopi, this sort of thing. Not surprisingly, you’ll also find plenty of nominees and winners of past Goodreads Choice Awards.
Take a leisurely scroll through the images below, click through the cover images for more details, and feel free to add to your own Want to Read shelf.

The Song of Achilles is one of my favorite. This is making me want to reread it. I read six of these and only a couple more are on my TBR list. Which is surprising since my TBR list is pretty long. LOL
I have read 15 books from here. Did not think that I read a lot lol. Glad all the acotar books are here. They are amazing
Only 6/40. I do plan on reading Song of Achilles, Remarkably Bright Creatures, and The Inheritance Games eventually.
Marian wrote: "Disappointing list, tbh..."Yes, this list is disappointing. But, that is what is to be expected from books that appeal to the most common of denominators.
Jessica wrote: "I DNF'ed Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow at about 75 pages in... Didn't know where it was going and there wasn't ANYTHING happening imo... 😅😬"I absolutely loathed it.
Read 1 and 3 more on my tbr list. Don’t know that I’m particularly interested in any others. I read The Glass Throne by Sarah Maas. It was good but didn’t make me want to read the rest of the series.
I’ve only read two on this list. A lot of these don’t appeal to me though. I wouldn’t read any Colleen Hoover and I’m not interested in chicklit romance or fantasy.
Wasn’t expecting to have read 15 - and a few on my TBR - out of the 40, I’m not usualt drawn to what’s ‘popular’ 😳
1/40. And I read that last year. Only 2 of these are on my tbr too. I guess the top 40 just don't really appeal to me 😭

I think being unique is a good thing. Besides there are millions of books out there to read. No need to follow the crowd to find good or even great ones!
I’ve read 19 of these books and they all were pretty good! My favs are Remarkably Bright Creatures, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones and the Six. Also a huge fan of Colleen Hoover - these are awesome! The Midnight Library and Silent Patient were also major wins 👍
Jessica wrote: "I DNF'ed Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow at about 75 pages in... Didn't know where it was going and there wasn't ANYTHING happening imo... 😅😬"I listend to it on audible, didn't see me sitting down and reading it either.
Deen wrote: "I've only read two books on here. I guess I've got a lot of catching up to do."Haha same
I've read 2 books and have 2 on my want to want to read shelf. Not much but okay. I think the hype of Collen Hoover is to much
Jessica wrote: "I DNF'ed Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow at about 75 pages in... Didn't know where it was going and there wasn't ANYTHING happening imo... 😅😬"OMGOOODNESS!! Thank you! Yes - halfway through and I threw it at my library.
I’ve read 27/52 of my challenge for this year. Only read 4 on this list. Only 1 I truly enjoyed - midnight library. Other three ok but not writing home about them. Not interested in any others except maybe Remarkably Bright Creatures. I’ll check that one out.
I read 18 of these and have a quite a few of them on my tbr. I’m hoping I can get to some of them soon!🥰
I’ve read 13/40 and a lot are in my tbr list…. Maybe i should reconsider my priorities and not be so influenced by media 🫠
My favorite from June was Lady Tan’s Circle of Women by Lisa See. I set my goal at 36, and I’m on number 28! I’ve never read so many books in my adult life! I’m loving it.
What is with all the Colleen Hoover titles? Some variety please— how about some historical fiction in the mix?
I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder and eye disease last summer that left me legally blind and unable to read. I’ve been undergoing treatment and read my first book in over a year last December. I read 8 books that month and I have also read 39/25 this year. It has brought me so much joy to read again! I will probably be on treatment for the rest of my life but I’ll never ever take reading for granted.
I’ve read more than my account reflects because I often forget to update. 😂 Some of these look great and I’ve added them to my TBR, but I agree…we need more non-fiction. 🤪
