message 110: by Anni (new)

Anni Who needs more horror than what we are experiencing now with the Covid experiment ?????

message 111: by Patrick (new)

Patrick I’ve just started “The Haunting of Hill House”. Both “ The Shining” and “The Exorcist” scared the bejesus out of me. “Pet Semetary” was also terrifying.

message 112: by Linda (new)

Linda Cirillo Scariest book ever? The Woman in Black, by Susan Hill.

Kurt Anni wrote: "Who needs more horror than what we are experiencing now with the Covid experiment ?????"
BIG OLE THUMBS UP TO THAT!!!!!

Irene Well Worth A Read Horror week? October should be horror month. But then I read horror all year round anyway

message 115: by Barbara (new)

Barbara On another forum, someone recommended a book called "The Cellar," by Minette Walters, so I picked it up. Scared the peewillikers out of me. No vampires, no zombies, no time travel, no Frankenstein, just solid cold scary.

message 116: by Julianna (new)

Julianna Can anyone recommend Gothic horror? Besides the ones we already know like Dracula, Frankenstein, and etc.

Also looking for modern works with the Victorian gothic horror aesthetic :)

Yuri Sar I will be reading A Ghost in The Throat by Doireann Ní Ghríofa, Carmilla (again) by Sheridan Le Fanu, and Irish Witchcraft and Demonology by St. John D. Seymour.

message 121: by Winnett (new)

Winnett Is there a Classics list?

message 122: by Calla (new)

Calla I just finished listening to “No One Goes Alone” by Erik Larson. It’s only available on audiobook, because a really good ghost story should be heard, not read. It was EXCELLENT! Good character development, nicely building tension, satisfying ending. Masterfully crafted from start to finish. Maybe Erik Larson will consider making a great ghost story an annual tradition!

message 123: by Marie (new)

Marie Peter wrote: "It's great to feature horror in a special week. My favorite genre! Now you can make your October into a Shocktober. Spooky greets Peter"

Oh Peter, did you create a new word?! "Shocktober"! I love it! I will have to remember that word from now on. :)

message 124: by Marie (new)

Marie I read horror most of the time anyway, but I have some different ones I want to read this month. If anyone is looking for a great ghost story though I just finished this one for the second time around. I read it last October around Halloween and just finished it for a second reread this last weekend. Highly recommend!

Kill Creek by Scott Thomas

The Woman in Black by Susan Hill, The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson, Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice and This House is Haunted by John Boyne all come to mind for what you’re looking for I dare say.

message 133: by Ken (new)

Ken Goudsward how about an anthology of spooky cat stories for kids? Meow O Ween

message 134: by Elena (new)

Elena Kesyakova Can anyone recommend me horror/paranormal books with adult characters (in their 20s). Most YA books have *only* teenage characters and I would like something a bit more in my age group, something I can relate to better.

message 135: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey So last year or maybe the year prior, there were a bunch of entitled people boohooing about horror week and how it offended their Christian beliefs and wanted the week to be something else themed and removed from the page (as if their interests and needs supersede everyone else’s), THIS YEAR we have AMAZING recommendations on all sorts of genres and are even bringing LGBTQ+ horror recs to the table!? That’s the progress I love to see in the world!!!! Makes my heart flutter lol!

message 136: by Cherlyn (new)

message 137: by Lautaro (new)

Lautaro Lobo Murray wrote: "I'm reading The Tommyknockers by Stephen King."
I loved that one

message 138: by Lautaro (new)

Lautaro Lobo I've recently read 30 Days of Night, Vol. 7: Dead Space by Steve Niles, and it was really good. It's a comic book.

I highly recommend Pet Sematary by Stephen King too, it's a classic.

And Home Before Dark by Riley Sager (the audiobook) was really good too, it's a thrilling ghost story. I listened to it last year and it was great, not only the story is good, but the audiobook is wonderfully done.

message 139: by Wayne (new)

Wayne Adams Groovy wrote: "To me, Stephen King's earlier novels are by far his best work. Dean Koontz is good. I need to read more of his work.

I'd like to add my Horror/Thriller to the list--A Body Resurrected.

Read Dean Koontz The Bad Place. It is his best novel in my opinion. This should have gone to the movie's big screen. Hollywood should jump on this now!
