Vicki Margaret wrote: "I love the Jezebel spooky stories contest but have a hard time with graphic horror. Any recommendations for a scaredy cat?"

Slade House is great!

message 58: by Stephen (new)

Stephen Hayes I'm reading December by Phil Rickman. Found it in a 2nd-hand book shop. Perhaps his last true horror novel -- I was sad when he went off horror and tried to turn his stories into whodunits.

message 59: by Tiag⊗ (new)

Tiag⊗ the Mutant No love for graphic novels? There's a ton of great horror in the comic book world, I'd like to reccomend House of Penance by Peter J. Tomasi.

message 60: by Meagan (new)

Meagan The Institute is so very good and engaging! The power of a child's mind is incredible and to read this take on how they can control world events is intricately done! I couldn't put it down!

Valeria Kymm wrote: "I'm going back to the classics this month with Dracula by Bram Stoker, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hide by Robert Louis Stevenson and my favorite gothic thriller Rebecca by Dap..."

You can never go wrong with the classics I've read all of those and all are good picks.

Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice, the best of the series so far for me are
-The vampire Lestat (book 2)
-Queen of the damned (Book 3)
-The tale of the body thief (Book 4)
-Armand (Book 6)
The extras Pandora and Vittorio are good too.
She changed a bit the focus in the lasts book of the original vampire chronicle series after book 6,7 then quitted for ages and started writing again a few years back making a come back with "the prince Lestat" which actually felt like the first books of the series so I quite liked.

I hated the cabin at the end of the world, the only book I've read by him was a head full of ghosts and it was really good! So I just picked this one, thinking...this is a good author...wrong! Im doubting if I should try at least one more book by him before giving up

message 63: by Valeria (new)

Valeria So books of this list that are NOT horror.

-The butterfly garden - psychological thriller
-Elevation, definitely NOT horror, Salem’s lot, The shinning, IT, Pet Sematary, those are Stephen King horrors, but not Elevation
and not so much Sleeping beauties either in my head after reading it is an odd Stephen King-like-thriller.
-Baby Teeth, psycho kid, toxic family, thriller-book.
-The institute, thriller, it has some supernatural elements, like the characters in the story been telekinetic and such, but not the horror-supernatural kind.

Between horror and psychological horror…..

-Home before dark, I really liked this one! I was hooked from page one.
-The cabin at the end of the world, HATED this book….A head full of ghost by this author is good, but this one a total disappointment.
-Craven Manor and The Carrow Haunt by Darcy Coates are horror, this author focus is classic horror stories, they are entertaining if not super scary.
-Imaginary friend, a slow build book, very slow at times, but I liked it overall…..
-Malorie…. the sequel of Bird Box is more psychologic thriller horror than traditional horror like, it goes more to the realm of sci-fi than horror.

I will take my chances with this list even though there are many here I wouldn’t classify as horror and I’ve picked the following for october-spooky reads (already loaded in my kindle and ready to go)

-My best friend’s exorcism by Grady Hendrix
-The ballad of Black Tom by Victor Lavalle
-The hunger by Alma Katsu
-Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno Garcia
-The only good indians by Stephen Graham Jones
-The year of the witching by Alexis Henderson
-The final girls support group by Grady Hendrix

message 71: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa Dargain I'll be reading another R.L. Stine book . I know they're lame excuses for horror , it's the closest I can come to this genre .
True horror really flips me out . But I like participating in the celebration anyway .

message 72: by Joshua (new)

Joshua I think I might start The Year of the Witching because it sounds like it might be right up my alley. I'm really trying to get more into horror so I'm hoping to find some good Gothic stuff that fits what I'm looking for.

message 73: by Linda (new)

Linda Arterial Bloom by Mercedes M. Yardley

Arterial Bloom was a Bram Stoker finalist. The cover alone (also an award winner from This Is Horror) is worth the price, but the stories are great. Disclaimer: I have a story in Arterial Bloom.

I'm currently reading Something More Than Night by Kim Newman--yes! the same author who wrote Anno Dracula.

message 74: by Mariana (new)

Mariana Best time of the year to read a book full of horror. My favorite this year is The spooky life of Bloom & Moon by Iris Torres.

Bryan Way Hoping to get more writing than reading done this month! I'm also doing promotion for a new short story in my zombie series, which, if I've done my job, is a panacea for fans of the genre.

message 88: by jyweniverel (new)

jyweniverel I praise my 12th grade English teacher for introducing me to Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein”. I thought it was only a book that guys would read. I was entirely wrong! This opened my eyes and changed my views dramatically on different books that I now read. The old adage is true, “Never judge a book by its cover” or genre for that matter!
One book I love reading around Halloween every year…”The Woman in White” by Wilkie Collins. He has become one of my favorite classic authors. I highly recommend anyone to check out his books.
Happy (and safe) Halloween 🎃

Night Shadows: Queer Horror
Edited by Greg Herren and J.M. Redmann
is a collection of short horror stories written by queer authors

message 99: by Kurt (new)

Kurt I think a lot of these books on this "Horror Week" list shouldn't be classified as true horror. Maybe the term "horror" has changed through the times (like "commerce" or "infrastructure" lol). I think anything from the unfortunately now-defunct Leisure Books should be focused on. Some of the publications from this company were pretty cheesy but oh-so-satisfying in the horror genre! Brian Keene, Jack Ketchum, Graham Masterton, Richard Laymon and so many others... great stuff!!!

message 100: by Rev. Ravyn (new)

Rev. Ravyn Onca I'll be rereading Anne Rice's The Mummy, or Ramses the Damned, the first in her Ramses the Damned series.

I am also starting the Blue Rose Trilogy, all in hardback, by Peter Straub.
