Read More Books in 2020 with the Goodreads Reading Challenge!
It's that time of year when people make New Year's resolutions to cut back on things they like (farewell, cookies, gluten, and wine!) and start doing things that might not be fun (ugh—hello, working out and counting calories).
But don't worry, there's a better way! Why not start 2020 by vowing to make more time for something you truly love? That's right. Spend more time reading! And to help you, we encourage you to join the 2020 Goodreads Reading Challenge.
It's simple: Set a goal of how many books you want to read this year, and we'll help you keep track of your progress. How many books will you be pledging?

After several years of offering the Reading Challenge, we've learned what helps people enjoy their year of reading. Here's some of our best advice.
- Push yourself, but be realistic. Avoid the dreaded reading slump by committing to an achievable goal. You can always increase the number of books later.
- Use the calendar as a guideline: 12 books (one per month), 24 books (two per month), or even 52 books (one per week).
- Get scientific: Check out this expert advice on how to develop a reading habit.
- Remember, this is fun! This challenge is all about what you want to read. But don't take our word for it: See what several of our very bookish Goodreads members have to say.

- Rereading counts! So by all means, go ahead and dive into those old favorites.
- Listen to audiobooks. This is a great way to read more and multitask.
- Put books on hold at your local library so it's easier to start your next book.
- Use your Want to Read shelf to help keep track of what you'd like to read next.
- If you’re an Amazon Prime member, did you know there are multiple ways you can read free books as part of your membership? Check out First Reads to get one free, pre-release Kindle book a month (available in the U.S., U.K., and Australia). And you can also read more free books with Prime Reading (available in the U.S., Canada, Brazil, the U.K., Germany, Spain, France, Italy, India, Japan, China, and Australia).

- Peruse our News and Interviews page for bookish articles and roundups, chats with favorite authors, and much more.
- Check out the winners and nominees from the 2019 Goodreads Choice Awards for hundreds of new books Goodreads members love.
- Browse thousands of reading lists on Listopia.
- Get started with a seasonal read with these reader-approved wintertime books.
- Reading = Self-Care! Studies have shown that a reading habit can prolong your life, make you a better leader, and improve your mental health all while being entertained by a good story.

So...what are you waiting for? Get started now!

I might increase mine along the way because I do read some shorter novellas that are part of my series books sometimes. Like you, I set my goal at 100. That's something we can always change later if we are making progress ahead of schedule. 100 is a good number. About 2 books a week.

65 in 2018 which I surpassed. I read 67 books.
In 2019 my goal was 75 books and I read 78 books.
So my next goal is 85 books in 2020. Let the reading begin!!

Ditto! :)

Even though I just work 3 days a week, I do volunteer work also RED. 100 might be a real challenge for me, but I'm gonna try anyway since I do read some of the novellas that go with my series books. Good luck to you. I'm sure 50 will be a reasonable goal for you to achieve.

I know that Goodreads will only count it as one. I read a 700 page book in 2019 and counted it as one. They will balance each other out if you read a lot of books. Although I counted that book as just one, I have read novellas that were only 70 pages. It averages out.

Every book counts as a single book, whether it's 10 pages or 1,000 pages. However, I don't know if this would be doable with that book or not, if you are reading a book that contains multiple books that are not always published together, what you can do is track each book separately (e.g., I have a three-in-one edition of the Chronicles of Faerie. Rather than saying I read The Chronicles of Faerie, I tracked the three books separately as The Hunter's Moon, The Summer King, and The Light-Bearer's Daughter)
As I've said in another post, I do wish we could track pages or words read rather than books, since some books are so much longer and take so much more time/effort than the average... but as Cindy said, if you read widely, it will probably all average out in the end.

Every book counts as a single book, whether it's 10 pages or 1,000 pages. However, I don't know if this would be do..."
I do the same thing Ellen whenever there are multiple books within one volume. I look them up individually and use those books. Even when there are just two books in one.

I didn't read 24 books but I was distracted by school and it was the first time I actually got into reading after 3 years of a reading slump. So I this year I want read a least 7 books. I hope I'll be able to do it!

I love the illustrations of this post. Who did it?
