Read More Books in 2020 with the Goodreads Reading Challenge!

Posted by Cybil on January 1, 2020
It's that time of year when people make New Year's resolutions to cut back on things they like (farewell, cookies, gluten, and wine!) and start doing things that might not be fun (ugh—hello, working out and counting calories).

But don't worry, there's a better way! Why not start 2020 by vowing to make more time for something you truly love? That's right. Spend more time reading! And to help you, we encourage you to join the 2020 Goodreads Reading Challenge.

It's simple: Set a goal of how many books you want to read this year, and we'll help you keep track of your progress. How many books will you be pledging?

After several years of offering the Reading Challenge, we've learned what helps people enjoy their year of reading. Here's some of our best advice.

Pro Tips for Reaching Your Goal:

Plan Accordingly

Boost Your Progress

  • Rereading counts! So by all means, go ahead and dive into those old favorites.

  • Listen to audiobooks. This is a great way to read more and multitask.

  • Put books on hold at your local library so it's easier to start your next book.

  • Use your Want to Read shelf to help keep track of what you'd like to read next.

  • If you’re an Amazon Prime member, did you know there are multiple ways you can read free books as part of your membership? Check out First Reads to get one free, pre-release Kindle book a month (available in the U.S., U.K., and Australia). And you can also read more free books with Prime Reading (available in the U.S., Canada, Brazil, the U.K., Germany, Spain, France, Italy, India, Japan, China, and Australia).

Quinn Don't want so much pressure. 12 books, each per month ;-)

message 52: by Elessija (new)

Elessija My last year goal was 5 because I'm a slow reader and don't have much time to read but I ended up reading 22 with the help of Audible so my 2020 goal is 25.

message 53: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Last year my goal was 75 and I made it to 85. I'm going to start with 85 this year and see what happens. I have an Audible subscription and love multitasking by listening to a book while doing chores on the weekends. Still, the majority of my books are hard-copy books from the library or my overlarge TBR pile. :)

message 54: by Amor (last edited Jan 01, 2020 09:47AM) (new)

Amor Asad Last year my target was 50 books but I read 63. This year I set a target of 104 books. So two books a week, shouldn't be too hard.

Happy New year.

Ahmet Uzar for 2020 , I have 202 books 🤔

Kieryn Hammer First time setting a goal! Im a student so I'm aiming for 52 books this year, wish me luck 📚

What generes do you usually read?

Sounds difficult. You could read short books

message 59: by Brooklyn (new)

Brooklyn I don’t think audiobooks should count as reading a book - it’s something else - not reading

message 60: by Grace (new)

Grace T I got through 400 last year (goal was 250) but that was really hectic so I'm setting for 300 and will try to go slower...but I can't help it if I put holds on all the new releases and then they all come in at once. xD

message 61: by Helen (new)

Helen I thought about upping my goal since I am retiring this year, but I'm going to leave it the same: 350. I'm a fan of British historical mysteries and British police procedurals and they are rarely over 300 pages, so it's a reasonable goal for me. And yes, sometimes I can read a book a day . It's a leftover from my time in college and all the intensive reading I did then -- trained myself to read very fast.

I don't think that the goal of this game is put presure on you. I think it's a way to motivate the people to read more. Now with technology and this stuff its more dificult to the people to read. So if they have a goal in a month or in year i think that they can leave for a while they phones, and focus on letters.

Sorry if I did any mistake, Im from Spain :).

I have about 40 unread books lying around, My goal is 50 books for the year, with at least 20 of those being the ones I already have!

message 64: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine I am a slow reader, and have a pretty busy schedule (school/work/other commitments) so it's difficult for me to read a lot. I always start "small" but reasonable, at 25 books a year, which can be a challenge to finish sometimes. If I am well ahead, I will increase it to 30, etc. I managed to finish 26 in 2019!

message 65: by Kasia (new)

Kasia 40 :)

message 66: by Rainelle (new)

Rainelle My goal this year is to read 200 plus books and be thoroughly entertained by them. I will also post my short but brief comments about the books. Follow me if you like. I will do the same. Happy reading everyone!

message 67: by Pinar (new)

Pinar G This year my goal is 60. I did 56 this year so I think it is decent.

message 68: by L (new)

L My goal is 50! It's a lot more than last year (goal was 15, read 27) but I'm deciding to count all the kids book I read with my daughter and any cookbooks i dive into. I also listen to a lot of podcasts and radio so I'm hoping to make of a habit of deciding to use that time for audiobooks instead and get into even more books on my list!

message 69: by aves (new)

aves lewis i love challenging myself but wish looking back on years it could be a bit more celebratory of what i accomplish and not just “better luck next year!”. i wanna celebrate reading 25 books in 2018! not just be reminded that i should’ve read 40. idk. maybe some people really like that i just wish the app made it more encouraging. i still love the books i’ve read and love goodreads!

message 70: by Lizz (new)

Lizz Garnica Goal of 65 :)

message 71: by Karen (new)

Karen Johnson 2019 I set my goal of 150 books, I reached it and exceeded it by reading 246 books for the year.
Hopefully I will be able to complete more books for this year.
Totally enjoy reading....🤗

message 72: by Lucine (new)

Lucine I like reading and working out ;)

I took part in the Reading Challenge for the last couple of years and am always looking forward to "Your year in books" at the end of each year.
I am a slow reader who loves to really enjoy every single book and spend some time with it. Of course, from time to time, it happens that I finish a book rather quickly because sometimes you just can't put them down. But usually I take my time, so I set my goal to 20 books this year. After all, you can always adjust the number.

Happy reading and listening to everyone!

message 73: by اهوي (new)

اهوي القراءة Last year my goal was 100 books and this year my goal is 120 books ( 10 books per month), I hope that I can do that

message 74: by Nichole (new)

Nichole My goal for 2020 is 50, same as last year, even though I beat last year's goal with 54. 50 keeps reading fun.

message 75: by Ellen (new)

Ellen For the last few years, my goal has been to read just 1 more book than the previous year (with the idea being to find my "sweet spot" - a high enough goal that it actually is a little bit of a challenge to complete, but not so high that I stop enjoying that challenge. As soon as that happens, I'll walk it back). In 2019, my goal was 21 and I got to 41 (best year ever!), so for 2020 I'm setting my goal to 42! Last year was pretty heavy on library books, hopefully this year I'll put a dent in the books I actually own but haven't read yet.

message 76: by Jessica (new)

Jessica My goal was 25 books these past few years... Now I have upped it to 30 this year! 😍

message 77: by Lori (new)

Lori Wood My goal is 20 books this year. I started using this app last august and managed 11 books since then. I think it's pretty realistic. I'll more than likely go well above my goal.

message 78: by Megg (new)

Megg GOALS! Goodreads has been such a fantastic push and resource for my reading goals. Thank you all!

2019's goal was 48. Finished 47. First full year on Goodreads!

Now, I want to slow down and chew on my chosen books a bit more. I'm doing 2 per month for 2020 so 24.

Happy reading all!

message 79: by Almas (new)

Don’t push yourself too hard. Any reading is great IMHO

message 81: by Robin (new)

Robin I’m starting with 18 books this year!

message 82: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra I’ll start with 365, but probably up it to 500. We will see how the first quarter goes, and then I’ll reevaluate.

message 83: by Amy (new)

Amy Leigh My main reading goal is to mix up the genres of books I'm reading this year.
I'd like to get through 52 books if I'm able to but if I can't reach that many it's no big deal.

message 84: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Because I've been in a reading slump for years, my goal is 12 or 1 book each month. I'd love to make it to my goal but even better if I go above it :)

message 85: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Last year was 50 and I passed it by reading 101 but this year I chose 30 since I have a job now and then am going to college this summer.

message 86: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Blake Completed my goal of 52 last year. This year I’m aiming for 70!

message 87: by Sebastian (new)

Sebastian Albertsson I read 40 books in 2019, so my goal this year is 40 at least!

message 88: by Destinie (new)

Destinie My challenge last year was for 52 books, so basically 1 a week and I ended up reading 75 (audiobooks). I listen to and from work, about 30 minutes each way and sometimes while I’m home cleaning. So I’m shooting for 78 this year. Audiobooks are a god send!! I love reading but couldn’t find the time between work and kids.

I hadn't even noticed that if you fall short the year just doesn't appear. I agree it's the books more so than the number that have value.

message 91: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Last year I set mine at 50 but could never make it to the library. Late in the year I found the OverDrive app and totaled at 36 in a few months. (I can speed read) made this year's goal 52. A book a week and if I slack hopefully I can double up when I have free time. Good luck y'all.

I love "Your Year in Books". It is fun to look back on what I read and which were my favorites. I like the layout that places the books in time order and adds trivia like total number of pages and the most and least popular compared to others. A real treat for a book nerd like me!

I'm a numbers geek, so I watch the number of books I read, the number of pages and the avg book length. I try to set a new personal record in at least one category year, but ultimately, I'm happy if I make it through the year having read some really good books.

You can see all of your previous challenges. If you click on the reading challenge link from the home page, the previous years will be on the right. You can also use the link they send you in an email at the end of the year to view your year in books, and it will take you to your year and at the top there are links to go to previous years.

I totally agree. I've broken 100 books a couple of times, but I refuse to set it as a goal, because then I would feel pressured to read all of the time. It's all about finding quality books that I enjoy and the numbers will come.
