Read More Books in 2020 with the Goodreads Reading Challenge!
It's that time of year when people make New Year's resolutions to cut back on things they like (farewell, cookies, gluten, and wine!) and start doing things that might not be fun (ugh—hello, working out and counting calories).
But don't worry, there's a better way! Why not start 2020 by vowing to make more time for something you truly love? That's right. Spend more time reading! And to help you, we encourage you to join the 2020 Goodreads Reading Challenge.
It's simple: Set a goal of how many books you want to read this year, and we'll help you keep track of your progress. How many books will you be pledging?
After several years of offering the Reading Challenge, we've learned what helps people enjoy their year of reading. Here's some of our best advice.

After several years of offering the Reading Challenge, we've learned what helps people enjoy their year of reading. Here's some of our best advice.
- Push yourself, but be realistic. Avoid the dreaded reading slump by committing to an achievable goal. You can always increase the number of books later.
- Use the calendar as a guideline: 12 books (one per month), 24 books (two per month), or even 52 books (one per week).
- Get scientific: Check out this expert advice on how to develop a reading habit.
- Remember, this is fun! This challenge is all about what you want to read. But don't take our word for it: See what several of our very bookish Goodreads members have to say.

- Rereading counts! So by all means, go ahead and dive into those old favorites.
- Listen to audiobooks. This is a great way to read more and multitask.
- Put books on hold at your local library so it's easier to start your next book.
- Use your Want to Read shelf to help keep track of what you'd like to read next.
- If you’re an Amazon Prime member, did you know there are multiple ways you can read free books as part of your membership? Check out First Reads to get one free, pre-release Kindle book a month (available in the U.S., U.K., and Australia). And you can also read more free books with Prime Reading (available in the U.S., Canada, Brazil, the U.K., Germany, Spain, France, Italy, India, Japan, China, and Australia).

- Peruse our News and Interviews page for bookish articles and roundups, chats with favorite authors, and much more.
- Check out the winners and nominees from the 2019 Goodreads Choice Awards for hundreds of new books Goodreads members love.
- Browse thousands of reading lists on Listopia.
- Get started with a seasonal read with these reader-approved wintertime books.
- Reading = Self-Care! Studies have shown that a reading habit can prolong your life, make you a better leader, and improve your mental health all while being entertained by a good story.

So...what are you waiting for? Get started now!
And let us know how many books you will be pledging this year! Tell us in the comments.

Happy New year.

What generes do you usually read?

Sounds difficult. You could read short books

I don't think that the goal of this game is put presure on you. I think it's a way to motivate the people to read more. Now with technology and this stuff its more dificult to the people to read. So if they have a goal in a month or in year i think that they can leave for a while they phones, and focus on letters.
Sorry if I did any mistake, Im from Spain :).

I have about 40 unread books lying around, My goal is 50 books for the year, with at least 20 of those being the ones I already have!

Hopefully I will be able to complete more books for this year.
Totally enjoy reading....🤗

I took part in the Reading Challenge for the last couple of years and am always looking forward to "Your year in books" at the end of each year.
I am a slow reader who loves to really enjoy every single book and spend some time with it. Of course, from time to time, it happens that I finish a book rather quickly because sometimes you just can't put them down. But usually I take my time, so I set my goal to 20 books this year. After all, you can always adjust the number.
Happy reading and listening to everyone!

2019's goal was 48. Finished 47. First full year on Goodreads!
Now, I want to slow down and chew on my chosen books a bit more. I'm doing 2 per month for 2020 so 24.
Happy reading all!

Don’t push yourself too hard. Any reading is great IMHO

I'd like to get through 52 books if I'm able to but if I can't reach that many it's no big deal.

I hadn't even noticed that if you fall short the year just doesn't appear. I agree it's the books more so than the number that have value.

I love "Your Year in Books". It is fun to look back on what I read and which were my favorites. I like the layout that places the books in time order and adds trivia like total number of pages and the most and least popular compared to others. A real treat for a book nerd like me!

Mom of three here weighing in to say Pinkalicious and Brown Bear, Brown Bear should totally be considered legitimate reads for your challenge! Three little kids? Nobody is going to convince me you aren't reading! Every night about 7:30, right?!

I need to do the same. I have about 24 good sized boxes of books and I am tired of looking at them.

I'm a numbers geek, so I watch the number of books I read, the number of pages and the avg book length. I try to set a new personal record in at least one category year, but ultimately, I'm happy if I make it through the year having read some really good books.

You can see all of your previous challenges. If you click on the reading challenge link from the home page, the previous years will be on the right. You can also use the link they send you in an email at the end of the year to view your year in books, and it will take you to your year and at the top there are links to go to previous years.

I totally agree. I've broken 100 books a couple of times, but I refuse to set it as a goal, because then I would feel pressured to read all of the time. It's all about finding quality books that I enjoy and the numbers will come.
