It was inevitable where this evening was going to lead. For an ErGer to bond, the mind needed to be broken open as only sex could – and her own body would force it soon enough. She tried to lean forward to feed him the wine but his hands kept her from him."Set down the glass first, then let me drink from your mouth." Carefully she put down the glass before leaning forward. In her haste and nervousness she parted her lips before touching his and spilled most of the wine down her chin and his neck. She froze in terror, aware of the strength in the hands around her waist and the sharp teeth entirely too close to her. His lips parted and his tongue snaked out to lazily lap at the liquid dripping down her lips and chin. Only when he had cleaned her thoroughly did he allow her to move back enough to meet his gaze. Her eyes fell to his mouth and the spilled wine that painted his neck and shirt red. Small droplets were still caught in the evening shadow of the beard along his cheeks. "Clean it!" The first flick of her tongue was tentative at best, barely a touch, but when he moved his head to allow her more access she became bolder. The taste of his skin, mixed with that of the red wine, filled her mouth – unidentifiable, subtle and strange. As her tongue reached his neck, his arousal grew impossibly large beneath her, pressing against the folds of her sex through only two layers of clothes. She shied back – feeling stupid immediately. It was inevitable where this evening was going to lead. For an ErGer to bond, the mind needed to be broken open as only sex could – and her own body would force it soon enough. It is best to use research against tedium, students to offset the rationality and an unlimited supply of stressballs for the faculty meetings. The stories? Well, they are just for me - like a mental manicure.

I'd thought my five-year anniversary would include a fancy dinner, some great sex, and maybe fending off a marriage proposal. Instead, it was the worst sex ever, and at the restaurant, my boyfriend broke up with me.

It's like I've been cursed with Bad Ex Karma. Whenever I try to date a new guy, he ends up with a concussion or a trip to the ER.

My internal "disaster consultants", the What Ifs, completely missed the clues leading to the breakup, so now they're working overtime to protect me from another potential heartbreak. My two best friends set me up on dates while assuring me it won't put men on the endangered species list.

There's one man who seems completely immune to the curse: a sexy chef named Jonathan. He keeps popping up in my life, and he stirs up the most delicious feelings. Maybe Bad Ex Karma isn't such a bad thing after all. . .

When we arrived at Jonathan's place, a lovely old Victorian house just a short drive away, I expected we'd dash inside, like impatient couples in the movies, leaving a trail of clothing behind as we raced to the bedroom.

But I'd forgotten about Jonathan's penchant for taking his time. He helped me out of his car and then kept my hand in his as we walked up the steps to his house. Inside, we stopped for a moment in the living room while he turned on a couple of lamps, giving the room a romantic ambiance.

"Have a seat. Get comfy."

I looked around, enjoying the warm yet cozy surroundings, and saw a leather couch that looked extremely inviting. Still, I chuckled. Men and their leather. I guess it’s a remnant of those long-ago cavemen days. I settled in, letting my shoes drop to the floor before tucking my legs underneath me.

Jonathan loosened his tie, and then took it off entirely, tossing it onto a nearby table. He untucked his shirt and started unbuttoning it, until he saw that I was watching.

"Don't stop now," I teased. "I'm pretty sure I've got a few singles in my purse I can tuck somewhere for a tip."

He laughed and headed into the kitchen. "I'll get us some wine. Anything you prefer?"

"Surprise me."

His appreciative chuckle made me ultra-tingly everywhere again. It was possible that nerves were playing a part here, since I didn't know exactly when we'd be heading to the bedroom. But I wasn't about to get derailed now.

"What’s your favorite wine?" I asked. "And none of this ‘it changes all the time’ stuff."

"I usually go with Cabernet."

"I knew it! Men always go for the big beefy wines."

"Why do you say that?" He ambled into the living room, two goblets in one hand, and a bottle of a very expensive Cab in the other.

I grinned. "It has something to do with size, like it always does."

"That's what you think, huh?" His eyes twinkled as he poured a glass of the most beautiful red wine I'd ever seen and handed it to me. "Well, I happen to like Cabernet because of its complexity. It takes a while to uncover all the layers. It starts with one thing, but then something else comes to the surface. You can spend hours discovering all its secrets."

I gulped. He wasn't just talking about wine, was he?

"Looks like Cabernet might be my favorite now too."

"I thought it might." He leaned down and kissed me, slowly, leisurely, letting me know we had all the time in the world. It was the most hypnotic kiss, the most delicious wine I’d ever tasted. I didn't want either of them to end.

He finally stepped away, setting the bottle and his glass on the coffee table. "I'll be right back."

I heard him moving around in the kitchen, and then it sounded like he was opening and shutting cupboards. The next thing I knew—

"Are you making popcorn?"

"I am."

In a few minutes Jonathan returned with a giant bowl of salted buttery heaven and settled himself next to me.

I couldn't keep from grinning. "Looks like foreplay has changed a lot in the past five years."

"Don't worry." He picked up his wine glass and clinked it against mine. "We'll get you all caught up."

Edwin Santora’s eyes were on me the second our solid wood door clunked shut. After kicking off my shoes and giving a silent wave to my brooding, shirtless roommate, I rushed directly upstairs taking two steps at a time. Within seconds, Edwin was flying up the stairs behind me, all brawn and pride. He stalked me down the hall, his large agile physique a shadow of stealth. No matter how smooth Edwin thought he was, I could always sense when he was lurking around. I disappeared into the bathroom, ignoring his approach, heart still racing, cheeks flushed with a healthy glow. It had been way too long and it was time for me to move on with my life. The days of Edwin and I were over and I had finally faced that fact. For that reason, I trusted my matchmaking to an eager co-worker. What else could I do? I didn’t seem to have any luck finding myself a man. Edwin filled the doorframe with his imposing shoulders. "Where are you going all dolled up like that?" I should have slammed the door shut behind me while I had the chance. The last thing I needed now was Edwin giving me a hard time. It had been months since my last date and let’s just say that it’s not possible for this one to go any worse than that one had. After carefully touching up my mascara in the mirror, I twirled around to face him, my glossy, brown hair fanning out behind me. "I got a date!" I smiled from honest excitement, but I really didn’t have time to chat about it. "Who is he?" Edwin pried. "You don't know him." Edwin’s chest flexed under my warm gaze, his abs held tight, sculpted from stone. Oh, I love watching him sweat. He narrowed his aqua eyes in response to my devious smile. Then, as if on cue, the doorbell rang. I made my way to the bathroom door, but Edwin boxed me out with his hip and took off ahead of me. He hurried down the hall with swift, powerful strides, every muscle in his body twitching with adrenaline. There was no point in trying to fight him for the front door. He had me beat. “Do you think you could put on a shirt, Eddie? Please?” Edwin shuffled down the stairs and ignored my request. "I'll get it," he hollered. He was all too eager to answer the door and his mischievous grin gave away his greedy intentions. "Edwin, be good!" I warned, stopping at the top of the open staircase. "What? I'm always good." He flashed me a sly smile and raised his dark arched eyebrows. I knew it meant trouble, as the butterflies danced nervously in my tummy. Edwin had better not blow this one too. He had a tendency of scaring away my dates. It was getting old. I clung to the wooden post, hoping the poor guy would pass the test. Edwin opened the front door ever so slightly and started in on his usual act, deliberately blocking my view. Bastard. Then he cracked the door open a little farther, teasing, his generous back still in the way. He folded his bulging arms over his impressive chest and stared down at my date with eyes dark and voice low. "Can I help you?" he asked firmly, acting all macho. I nearly burst out laughing and had to hide the smile on my face to show that I was not amused. Even if I was. "Is this the home of Abigail Jenkins?" the poor guy asked, hesitantly. "Yes," Edwin answered, but he didn’t invite him in. "Edwin!" I warned, scowling at his back. I’d had enough. As I started down the stairs to intervene, I struggled to interpret their mumbling. It was time that I took things into my own hands.

I understand what they mean now, but they know I want to spend every single last minute by my Lola. We’re up in her room; away from the party and the adults. We’ve hung more sheets up over the canopy on her bed so it’s like we’re in a tent. We’re both lying on our sides facing each other. Since it will be a long time before I see her again, I’m doing my best to memorize every little detail about her: the number and pattern of freckles on her nose, how incredibly long her eyelashes are, the exact shade of green of her eyes. I trace the shape of her face with my fingertip. She closes her eyes. My eyes focus on her mouth. I trace her lips and lean over and kiss her. Her eyes snap open and fix on mine. I’ve kissed her almost every single day for the last few years; a peck on the lips or the cheek before I leave for the night. We hug, we hold hands… but something about
this moment is very different. She puts her hands on either side of my face and tells me what I want, what I need to hear. “I love you, Emmett Allan Davis.” I hug her to me, putting her head on my shoulder, kissing the top of her hair. We fall asleep clinging to each other like our lives depend on it.
