It has been fifteen years since she escaped Mount Pleasant and everyone and everything in it. Now she must oversee the closing of her mother’s affairs. The only bright spot is Rory’s blossoming friendship with boarder CJ Rausch. Rory senses that CJ just might be her soul mate, but the handsome excavator is somewhat of a standoffish loner. After an unthinkable event, Rory’s life spins out of control, and she must deal not only with her grasping, selfish sister, but also a manipulative, wannabe suitor. Looking into the mirror, he wondered what Rory saw when he took off his sunglasses. Her initial reaction had been similar to most people when they saw his eyes for the first time.
As a child, he was viciously teased for having what the kids called “vampire eyes.” They were eyes he would never have wished for, but inherited from his mother. His eyes were so green and sensitive they hurt when exposed to bright sunlight without sunglasses, further purporting the rumor he wasn’t really human, but some kind of vampire or creature from space. But he was a man, pure and simple. The blood running through his veins was red like everyone else.
All he wanted was to find a nice comfortable life and enjoy it to the maximum, and if he could find someone special enough to share it with, so much the better. But with this want came a nagging fear. Having lost his mother so early in life and sharing a distant, even guarded relationship with his father, he wasn’t sure he knew how to love anyone in the way they needed and deserved. It wasn’t because he was cold or cruel; he honestly didn’t know how to express his emotions, and that scared him.
How could you sustain a relationship if you didn’t know how to make someone happy, or live up to their expectations of you? His parents barely tolerated each other’s presence until they divorced. Even though he was young at the time, it stuck firmly in his memory how unhappy they really were, and how they made every effort to make each other as miserable as possible, before they finally separated.

Petals of Loss
That morning, the families of the dead took a charter boat out to the area where the ferry went down. They proceeded with the ceremony in spite of their heartache, throwing wreaths and flowers onto the dark depths as transient monuments marking the spot where the wedding party went down.
Each night, the women rose with wisps of steam and curling fog laden in the bouquets and flowers tossed into the black waters of the solemn bay in their honor.
Their lavish wedding garments dripped with floral fragrance while tears of sorrow stained the petals of loss.© Muffy Wilson

Whether the lady of the keep demands a few stolen hours of pleasure with a captured Viking warrior or the handsome Northman is the one seducing his captive, you will find plenty of lusty adventures in settings as far-flung as Ireland, Iceland, Norway, Byzantium, Moorish Spain and the New World.

“Hey sexy.” I hear Kaitlyn’s voice and my eyes widen glancing up, as the dancers are once again on the bar.
“Kai?” I can’t stop myself from calling her by name. I’ve always seen the dark-haired agent in a pants suit, one rare occasion a skirt. This is something else entirely.
Kevin removes his drink from the bar. “You know the dancer?”
Kaitlyn is up there wearing nothing more than a red g-string bikini. Her brunette locks cascade down her back and her makeup looks like a hooker must have put it on her. She’s got thick turquoise eyeliner and lime green glittery eye shadow.
“Long story. We used to work together.” It’s not a lie but in the way Kevin’s mind is ticking, he must think I had been an exotic dancer. Not the case! Though, what harm could come from him believing it to be true? It is safer for everyone, than Kevin knowing I’m working undercover.
Kevin laughs and his cheeks redden. I’m guessing it’s the beer. He’s looking over Kaitlyn a little too intimately and long for my pleasure.
“Quite a story, I bet,” Kevin says. “Maybe you can share it on our second date?”

When we got home, I decided to put all our bickering aside and make love to my husband. While Chris pleased me sexually, our busy work schedules had reduced our lovemaking to mundane quickies. I knew if I was bored, he must be too.
To spice things up, I’d read magazines, watched porn, and gathered tips from my friends. He loves lacy lingerie, so I wore my black bustier, black French-cut panties, and fishnet stockings. I lit scented candles and put on soft jazz to set the ambiance in the bedroom. Chris walked in.
“Damn!” he said.
He tugged on my lingerie to take it off. I couldn’t hide my smile. His hands hungrily roamed my body.
“Easy, baby. Enjoy what you’re looking at.”
I felt self-conscious as he groped me because his earlier comment about me looking chunky, kept replaying in my mind.
We made love. I used a lot of the new ideas I learned to spice things up, but he didn’t seem to notice. Chris always has the decency to make sure I cum, but again we ended up having another quickie because he had to wake up early the next morning. He rolled over on his side and went to sleep almost immediately after. I frowned, shook my head and stared at the ceiling. Was it me? Is this how marriage was supposed to be? Had we both gotten too comfortable?
I decided I’d start going to the gym and get a personal trainer. I hoped working with a trainer would change me enough that even Chris would have to say something positive about it. I didn’t imagine how much it would change me.

Which living person do you most admire? The person I admire most would be my Mother. My biggest inspiration/motivation is my daughter. As a parent, I want nothing but the best for my child. I look at her as an extension of myself. I didn’t have a great childhood. My parents didn’t have a lot of money, I was insecure about myself, I lived in poverty, and I missed out on opportunities due to a lack of funds. While my childhood wasn’t the best, I had a great role model, my Mother. I watched my Mom struggle to pay bills, work two jobs, put herself through school all the way up to her doctorate, and moved us out of the bad neighborhood we lived in into a house in the suburbs. She did all of these tasks on her own. My Mother did the best she could to push for me to have better opportunities than she did. She pushed me to want more out of myself and to become the best person I could be.
What is your greatest fear?I’m scared that I’ll be a one hit wonder or, in this case, a three hit wonder. I never want to lose my hunger to produce great books or to put out books that people can’t relate to and hate. No one knows this about me, but I beat myself up, editing and second guessing myself every day. I have a good “poker face”. I do well at acting like I’m confident and calm, but in reality I worry that readers will not understand the messages I’m trying to relay, or they just won’t care about my books altogether.
Which book have you read the most in your lifetime? Why?I’ve read Richard Wright’s “Native Son” the most in my lifetime because I love how his character “Bigger Thomas” was so flawed. He was far from perfect and was on the cusp of being both the protagonist and antagonist. As a reader, I hated Bigger Thomas and felt sorry for him at the same time. The book played on my emotions and I loved that a book could make me feel emotional.
What quality do you most admire in a woman/man, lover/spouse or influence/boss?I like a woman that is strong, emotionally, physically, and mentally. I love women that is driven and ambitious, someone that will push me to be better.
What authors or friends influenced you in helping you become a writer? That author for me would be author Eric Jerome Dickey. What attracted me to his work was the fact that it was different from most of the other Urban/ African American Fiction authors that I had read. I have spoken to him peA teacher that influenced me would be Mrs. Marcus. When I was in her 8th-grade class, I read Richard Wright’s “Native Son”  I read that book, and it was life changing for me. I knew I wanted to one day write something that could have the same effect on people. While in 8th grade, my English teacher Mrs. Marcus gave the class a poetry assignment. My poem was on basketball. I don’t remember what I wrote, but I remember my teacher was blown away by it. She encouraged me to keep writing. She was one of my most influential teachers, and I promised her if I ever wrote a book, I would write a poem about the Holocaust for her. (She was Jewish and had family that were survivors.) My dream was to publish a poetry book. I continued to write throughout high school and college.
My college professors told me I had talent as a poet and writer, so I decided to go to lounges that had open mics to perform my poetry. Hearing people cheer for me and appreciate my words, inspired me to keep writing. My first published book was a poetry book titled “Times Have changed and Life is Strange.” I wrote a poem for Mrs. Marcus titled “Holocaust”, keeping my promise. The poem “Ugly” from “Times Have Changed and Life is Strange”, is the poem that inspired me to write my first novel “Monster.” I reflected on my life and felt it would be a good story that would teach and possible change people’s lives the way Richard Wright’s “Native Son” had done for me.
Which are your three favorite books? Top Favorite authors? My top favorite authors are Richard Wright, Eric Jerome Dickey, Zane, and Carl Weber. Three of my favorite books are: Richard Wright’s “Native Son” Eric Jerome Dickey’s Cheaters and Zane’s Addicted.
Where do you get your greatest ideas for writing?I get my ideas for writing just from living life and observing the world. I love to people watch, and I’m constantly thinking. When I’m developing my characters, I like them to be layered. I don’t want to make perfect characters because no one is perfect. I develop characters that have strengths and flaws because I feel that makes it easier for readers to connect. I put pieces of myself in every character, but I also look at the personality traits of strangers, family, and friends to inspire me for my character development. I like to do research also by interviewing strangers to get different perspectives on topics.
What is your ‘Writing Routine’, if any?I write whenever I have the time or as soon as I have an idea. I have a Samsung Note 4 so if an idea comes to mind, I literally write it down or use the voice memos to record my thoughts and write them out when I get time. I try to write something every day, even if it’s only paragraph. I’m a huge perfectionist, so I’m constantly editing and re-editing while I’m writing. Once my project is completed, I edit again to try to make my work the best it can be. When I’m writing, I can have music or a movie playing in the background, but I totally zone out and focus on writing. I turn the internet off when I’m working on my laptop because honestly, I usually end up looking at Facebook or checking out stuff on ESPN. To include my daughter in my writing process, she puts her desk next to mine while I’m writing and practices writing her letters and/or doing her homework.
How can readers connect with you online?Readers can always email me at AuthorBenBurgessjr@gmail.com, or they can go to my fan pages and website to stay in touch or learn more about my works.Blog: https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/6925256.Ben_Burgess_Jr_/blogFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/BenBurgessJrTwitter: https://twitter.com/Ben_Burgess_JrLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=50211048&trk=nav_responsive_tab_profile_picPinterest: http://www.pinterest.com/bennyb15/Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Ben-Burgess-Jr./e/B00BCKZPHK/ref=sr_tc_2_0?qid=1408072175&sr=1-2-ent
Can you tell us what is coming up next for you?My next project is titled “Daddy’s Girl” Which will be a story of the trials and tribulations of a single father raising a bi-racial daughter on his own. The daughter character in this book will be “Lynn” from my first novel monster. Here, you will see her origin, and learn more about her character.
*Bonus Question: What are your Top (10?) Writing Tips? Writing Advice? There will be lots of times when you want to give up. There will be times when people will talk bad about your book or sales might be low. Never give up. Believe in yourself and believe in your work. Listen to critiques and push your pride to the side. It doesn’t matter how great of a writer you believe you are, you can always improve. There will be those who will not be fans of your writing, but you should never give up. Keep improving and learning your craft. Edit and re-edit. (*always have your books professionally edited. You want people to take your book seriously and not feel that it is amateurish.) Learn from your mistakes, take classes and read other authors. Research the industry. Two of the most important things to do are: 1. Find a credible editor and 2. Promote, promote, promote. You have to put your heart and soul into your work. While it will be hard, and you will go through trials and tribulations, in the end it’s worth it when your book is entertaining people, and it’s successful.AUTHOR FOLLOW LINKSAMAZON AUTHOR PAGE WEBSITE / BLOG | FACEBOOK | TWITTER GOOGLE+ | PINTEREST | GOODREADS SHELFARI Love & Happiness - Teaser  GIVEAWAY PRIZES(5) Five paperback books to (5) selected winners. a Rafflecopter giveaway

Beatrix motioned Langley to a chair. He looked mulish for a moment. Then practicality intervened and he sat stiffly. As he moved, she saw a slight bulge at his shoulder. Ahhh. The bleeding wound she sensed was in his shoulder and it was bandaged. Not a new wound, then. He definitely looked pale now.
“Symington, a glass of brandy for Lord Langley?” But her ever-discerning majordomo already hovered with a salver laid with brandy.
Southey, the pedestrian poet laureate, pushed to the front of the crowd. “I can hardly credit footpads in Hay Hill Street.” Castlereagh and Chumley hung over Langley as well. Beatrix had lost the attention of the room.
She took the opportunity to observe Langley. He gulped the brandy and the color came back into his face. He was deft with their questions, answering but not answering. It was if he wanted them to doubt his story of being set upon by footpads. Once she saw the twinge of pain as he eased his shoulder. He had been set upon in Hay Hill, but his assailants hadn’t made the wound in his shoulder, only opened it, she guessed. Ah, perhaps he wanted his listeners to make up other stories more in keeping with his reputation as the most debauched man in London. What a devious way of achieving it! If he wanted to shock them, why didn’t he tell them about the wound bleeding even now in his shoulder and what adventure had occasioned it? Beatrix’s senses were heightened by the scent of blood. Lord, she would need to feed again tonight at this rate!
She got to her feet almost without realizing, and took the brandy decanter from Symington. The young men parted for her, unconsciously, as people always did. She stood over Langley. He looked up at her. The green eyes were jaded. They had seen much for one of his tender age and were disgusted by it. How old was he? Not yet forty, she wagered. She gestured with the decanter and he held up his glass. She poured, but her gaze kept returning to his face. He had determination. He thought he was implacable. Silly man! Implacable was the onward march of time, the loneliness, the endless repetition of small failures and large ones in people, in the world, in herself. John Staunton, Earl of Langley, was not implacable.
He was ... What was he? All she knew was that Langley was not what he seemed. Intriguing.

Carson's Story by Blak Rayne - A Review

Carson's Story Carson's Story by Blak Rayne

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

While this book is the third in this series, it is a tremendous stand-alone read. Well crafted, articulate descriptions and nearly palpable tension are the mainstream threads that weave this multi-faceted and emotionally layered story together. Carson, a twenty year veteran on the RCMP force is involved in a vehicular crash while on duty that leaves him physically and mentally traumatized. After recovering from his physical injuries, he struggles with the PTSD flashbacks that paralyze his mental recovery. Questioning everything in his life, his history, his motivations, his love and marriage to his long time love and husband, Carson’s life is thrown into turmoil. His painful struggles have a near disastrous effect on his marriage to the man with him he has pledged his devotion.
This would be enough of a storyline for most authors but not so for Blak Rayne. She adds a further layer of pressure in the form of a drug dealing low-life who has long been trying to get Carson into his bed, one way or another. Carson, cleared to return to work, is completely stressed over returning to work. This pressure magnetizes Carson’s struggle and throws his marriage into a downward spiral, adding yet more stress to every aspect of Carson’s life and his ability to cope.
This is a wonderful story of human nature and the evolution of our lives and commitments. While it is the story of a married gay man struggling through the shards of a devastating automobile accident and traumatic recovery, it reflects the humanity of everyone’s life struggles. We all try to deal effectively with the surprises and challenges life deals us.
In the end, it is the strength and resilience of the people that we love—often in spite of ourselves—that help us survive our personal, emotional and physical life-fights. The importance of being honest and vulnerable, truly vulnerable, factors significantly in Carson’s recovery and long-term happiness. No matter the genesis of his struggle, or ours, it is often the simplest decision, the softest thing that unwittingly changes the course of our life. That comes to Carson when he needs it most.
This is a story of hope and promise, love and change. A story embracing struggle to evolution. It is the survival not of the fittest, but of the loved that this story tells. And I loved it.
