It's the anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law and I can't locate the book with an autograph of Ferdinand Marcos that I chanced upon in Book Sale. I'm posting the flyleaf of "Circles of Life" a book by Imelda Romualdez Marcos to show a sample of her handwriting.

Research requires a critical attitude. Whether the source is a 16th-century manuscript, a physical book, or Google, the researcher must cross-check with other sources and validate the information at hand. I remind my students that there is a lot to be found on the Internet besides porn, and that not...

"Weapons of Moroland" used to be a popular but tacky tourist souvenir from the Philippines. Actual weapons represented in miniature and labelled here are to be found in museum bodegas in the US and Europe. These were collected as early as the 18th century. Look closely at the background in a fight scene between Tommy Jones and Samuel Jackson in the film "Rules of Engagement" (2000) to find Weapons of Moroland on the wall.

Contrary to popular belief, Rizal published three not two books. Everyone knows or has read the Noli (1887) and the Fili (1891) few know about Rizal's second book, his annotated edition of Antonio de Morga's Sucesos de las islas Filipinas (Events of the Philippine Islands) published in Paris in 1890. This autographed copy is in a private collection in Manila, it was presented to his Spanish bodyguard in 1887 Jose Taviel de Andrade whose brother Luis would be his counsel during his trial for treason in 1896.

Four decades have passed since the official declaration of martial law by Ferdinand Marcos. For good feng shui Marcos tried to time significant things on dates that had his lucky number “7” or its multiples. Thus, Proclamation 1081, the declaration of martial law, was signed and dated Sept. 21, 1972...

I started a new series to share autographs with a first edition of the Noli me tangere (1887) inscribed to Ferdinand Blumentritt. The Frontispiece with Rizal's photo was made specially for this bound edition, other copies do not have the photo.

C. R. Boxer, eminent historian of Asia, is known to Filipino historians for an anonymous 16th-century manuscript on the Philippines referred to as the “Boxer Codex.” This 307-page handwritten chronicle would not be very different from other travel accounts of the period except that 15 of the 75 illu...

Was in the Bookfair yesterday, spoke to teachers before lunch and spent almost 3 hours signing books. I was quite tired but meeting readers of my books made me feel better. Thank you all for following this Fan Page and taking the trouble to read me.

When people ask where I get the material for this column, I often smile and say that I make it all up. After all, one constipated academic sneered at my appointment at the UP Creative Writing Center, saying that I actually wrote fiction and passed it off as fact. I did not waste my time on a critic ...
