Nila grew abundantly along the Pasig and gave the city its name Manila. (may nila). Some idiot added a "d" to give us: Maynilad, Maharnilad, and Lagusnilad! In Fr. Blanco's Flora de Filipinas circa 1877 we find the "ixora manila." There is no "d" after nila.

‘BR’ and different reasons for reading books

WHEN I lived with my parents, their visitors would often be given an obligatory tour that included a stop in my library, which occupied two of the biggest rooms in the house. If I was unfortunate to be working at the time of the intrusion, I would often be given a sorry look and ignorantly asked, “N...

Contrary to popular belief the Spanish friars did not destroy all of native Philippine culture, some of that culture especially languages were preserved by them. The earliest Tagalog dictionary was compiled by the Franciscan friar Pedro de San Buenaventura and published in Pilar, Laguna in 1613. For many years the only copy known to scholars was in the British Library in London until a more complete copy was found in Spain and reprinted by a company that specializes in rare and obscure books. You cannot imagine how much history lies untapped in language, in dictionaries.

I have appeared in two films that were rated X by MTRCB, thus no Filipino director wants to hire me anymore. My dream role is to play Godzilla destroying downtown Tokyo and was thrilled to play such on a japanese movie set.

Atang de la Rama, National Artist for Theater, was the widow of Amado V. Hernandez, National Artist for Literature. She was in her 80's and I was in my 20's when we had our weekly Sunday morning telebabad that made me realize that I was probably born old.

Mass-produced plastic buttons are everywhere, they are almost worthless, but when US sailors went ashore in Manila in the 1900's one of the recommended souvenirs/pasalubong were hand-harvested, hand-made mother-of-pearl buttons. Very stylish.

Wow mali! Aguinaldo gave this autographed photo to a Col. Younghusband who read it wrong and published it in his book The Philippines and Roundabout. Caption says he was born May 9 but Aguinaldo provided: his birth place as Kawit, his birth time as between 8-9 in the morning 22 March 1869.

Havent felt a real earthquake in Tokyo for sometime now. Half an hour ago we had a 5.1 degree quake. Nothing fell off my shelves but being a circular one it made me a bit dizzy.
