Mass-produced plastic buttons are everywhere, they are almost worthless, but when US sailors went ashore in Manila in the 1900's one of the recommended souvenirs/pasalubong were hand-harvested, hand-made mother-of-pearl buttons. Very stylish.

Wow mali! Aguinaldo gave this autographed photo to a Col. Younghusband who read it wrong and published it in his book The Philippines and Roundabout. Caption says he was born May 9 but Aguinaldo provided: his birth place as Kawit, his birth time as between 8-9 in the morning 22 March 1869.

Havent felt a real earthquake in Tokyo for sometime now. Half an hour ago we had a 5.1 degree quake. Nothing fell off my shelves but being a circular one it made me a bit dizzy.

You may have received a scam e-mail from a friend, whose account has been hacked, saying that he is currently on a trip to London, that he was held up and needs some money to tide him over until he returns home.

One Sunday last spring, when the cherry blossoms were followed by hydrangeas I came across TV5's Jove Francisco outside St. Ignatius church, Tokyo. Ambush interview followed.

In November 1838 Domingo Roxas acquired 59 carabaos for the hacienda de Calatagan in Batangas. To make sure that even an illiterate could understand the transaction the carabaos were drawn on the receipt just like we write checks out in words and numbers today. I will request to see the original document from the Ayala Archives someday.

I have been following the auction results of Christie’s and Sotheby’s Hong Kong for some time, and noticed that many excellent prewar works of National Artist Fernando Amorsolo have come under the hammer and sold within the estimates. Prices are in the 6-figure range, out of reach for most of us mor...

Marilou Diaz-Abaya (1955-2012) was all smiles last time we saw each other in St. Lukes Medical Center. I presumed she was getting better and would return to film making soon. Sad to hear she has moved on. Partly hidden in the back Dr. Kit Navarro.

This advertisement from the prewar Philippine Magazine underscores the sorry neglect of our railroads and trains resulting in the loss of a more convenient and comfortable way to get to Baguio and Legazpi.

Attended a Latin Mass in St. Mary's Cathedral yesterday with Ninette de las Peñas of the Ateneo Math Department. We came across the Archbishop of Tokyo, Peter Takeo Okada, in the parking lot and gathered some holiness by literally rubbing elbows with him.
