I've always admired the way Japanese sleep in the train: no nodding, no snoring, no open mouths, they always get up when the train stops at their station thus this was a rare scene from the Tokyo Metro. He probably is tired from dancing Gangnam-style. Do this in Manila and Houdini will make your glasses, wallet, briefcase, and shoes disappear.

"El Presidente" is a film whose production design was presumably based on historical photos like this one taken in 1899 showing Emilio Aguinaldo's arrival at Barasoain church for the Malolos Congress. At first glance I was impressed by this magnificent state carriage complete with liveried footmen and coachmen wearing fancy hats (one not in photo has a curly wig) until I was told it was actually borrowed from the town funenaria.

Todays news becomes tomorrow's history. How will a future historian make sense of an event if the primary source, an eyewitness account looks and sounds like this. To get an idea of the challenges a historian faces in his work try to make sense of this.

Though it is heartening to see history as a subject for popular culture, 'El Presidente' exemplifies what ails our nation. We have amnesia. Mark Meily casts Andres Bonifacio as a traitor. I do not doubt Meily's sincerity, but I have a problem with his history.

Sodom and Gomorrah

SOMEONE told me once that the popular love motel chain Sogo, with its distinctive Japanese logo, is actually formed from two biblical names: SOdom and GOmorrah. I remember these names very clearly because I had devout aunts who took us to watch vintage sword-and-sandal flicks during Lent like “The T...

During the New Year we look back on the year just past and look forward to a better one ahead. During this time, memory races further back to people and places that have formed part of our lives.

Happy New Year! This prewar watercolor by Anselmo Espiritu in my postcard collection doesnt depict fireworks but the eruption of Taal volcano. We greeted 2013 on the 28th floor helipad of our condo watching all the fireworks in the city comparing: Ayala, Rockwell, Forbes Park, Urdaneta and Fort Bonifacio pyrotechnics with a smile knowing people burned their money to give everyone a good show. May we all have a good year ahead!

Hero’s last Christmas in 1896 far from merry
newsinfo.inquirer.net
Of the many references to Christmas in the five-volume compilation of Jose Rizal’s correspondence, the formal but surly letter dated Dec. 25, 1896, stands out.

Rizal wanted to be buried in Paang Bundok, they buried him under the monument in Luneta. Rizal said he didn't want anniversaries, the President will lay a wreath at the monument tomorrow. All but one piece of bone is in Luneta, in Fort Santiago you will find a part of Rizal's vertebra, chipped on a side where it is said the bullet struck and snuffed out his life.
