Dasmariñas is the name of: a Cavite town, a posh Makati gated community, and a busy Chintown street in Manila. There were two men called Dasmariñas in Philippine history: Gomez Perez Dasmariñas Spanish governor-general (1590-1593) murdered by Chinese rowers while on military expedition, and his son Luis Perez Dasmariñas governor-general (1593-1596) who commissioned the Chinese artisan who carved the ivory head of the venerated image La Naval de Manila. This is a photo of Luis that gives us a face to Dasmariñas.

Arturo Luz recalled his introduction to classical Japanese theater half a century ago during a trip to Tokyo with the painter Fernando Zobel; they spent the better half of an evening watching the slow, studied movements of an actor who took almost an hour just to get on stage.

Madre Jeronima, Foundress of the Monasterio de Sta. Clara in Manila has been waiting for centuries to be canonized a saint. This terrifying portrait was painted by Velasquez when she was in Sevilla waiting for the ship that would take her to Manila. It is one of my favorite paintings in the Museo del Prado in Madrid. See my Inquirer column on her yesterday on this page.

The cute baby in this 19th century family portrait by Simon Flores is the "lolo" of historian Serafin D. Quiason. He was originally nude but when he grew up burned the "toot" with his cigar. To hide the damage clothes were painted over the baby. Scientific examination should validate this amusing anecdote behind the painting now in the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Collection.

The first antique Filipiniana dictionary I ever owned (“Vocabulario de la Lengua Tagala” by Pedro de Sanlucar, 1754) came from Ambeth Ocampo. Way back in the early ’80s, he was already collecting a lot of old Filipino books—I mean by “old” that most of them were still in Spanish—that I then wondered...
