Approve the Freedom of Information Act

As a historian, I hope that President Aquino’s third State of the Nation Address will contain a reference to the Freedom of Information Act that has been pending in Congress for a long time.

Dr. Nancy Elizabeth Snow, academic, author and expert on Public Diplomacy was my neighbor in Sophia University since the spring. She returns to California in a few days so I lose a regular walking buddy and laughing companion. I hope she can visit and lecture in Manila in the future as she has the same popcorn value as me.

How and why history is written

THICK books often go unread. Tolstoy’s “War and Peace” or Proust’s “In Search of Lost Time” remain on my bucket list. The Oxford English Dictionary and the 55-volume Philippine Islands by Blair and Robertson will never be read cover to cover but have at least been dipped into for work and reference....

Its truly a sad day when someone who made the nation laugh for many decades has passed on. Goodbye Rodolfo Vera Quizon of RVQ Films, the endorser of a pain reliever called "Dolfenal" because it is his screen name we all remember. Farewell "Dolphy" or in recent times "Pidol" (1928-2012)

National Artist Arturo Luz narrates that when he was Director of the Design Center he noticed the sculptural possibilities of paper clips twisted out of boredom or stress. These gave rise to the black metal sculptures of the 1970s he jokingly calls the "Spaghetti series." These small prototypes gave rise to giant ones now poised outside the Ayala Museum and the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

This anting-anting shirt was allegedly used by Macario Sakay. Magic shirts like these were used by many Filipinos during the Philippine Revolution and the Filipino-American War who believed it made them bullet-proof, bayonet-proof, and cannon ball-proof.

What is your first memory of a book? That was a simple question that unfortunately had more than one simple answer. Racing through the many rooms in my mind, I found not one but many childhood memories of books.
