Fernando Amorsolo is best remembered for his cheerful paintings of the prewar or "Pistaym" Philippines, but he also documented the horror and destruction of World War II that many collectors avoid because these canvasses are considered bad feng shui in any home. Pls share.

Some friends on Facebook still have their profile pictures blacked out to mourn the 44 policemen killed in an operation to extract two known terrorists from territory controlled by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in Mindanao. Karen Berthelsen Cardenas dug up lines I should have used for the column I could not write. The Internet does have more interesting items than porn. Karen wrote:
I was doing some googling on Fr Vicente Marasigan and I came upon an old (2008) article of Ambeth R. Ocampo and his words ring true as we grieve the death of the Fallen 44.
"Father Marasigan's words came as a shock to me when I first read them, but it also made me realize that the life sacrificed for country is more than just a historical event, it has a personal dimension to it. A dead hero is someone's father, mother, brother, sister, husband, wife or lover. The sacrifice is more painful for those who are left behind. When a folded flag is given to the relatives of a soldier who has fallen in battle, it is conferred with the stirring words, 'Take this symbol from a grateful nation.' It will never replace the loved one lost, and when I think about the living people left behind by our heroes, I appreciate an even greater sacrifice on their part."

I chose to stay home during the Papal weekend and watch everything unfold on TV. No crowds, no diapers, just idiotic commentary from TV anchors and reporters. I have no pictures with the Pope, not even the cardboard ones in churches, but I have the next best thing, a photo with Cardinal Tagle.
