Historians need to bridge the present and the past, the old and the new, the young ones and the young once. Everyone knows Rizal from his favorite photo taken in Madrid in 1890 (left), but if he lived in Manila in 2015 he would look different (right). Both photos can be found on the internet, but making the connection is what makes history relevant to our times. (Modern Rizal courtesy of Justine Nepomucano Cruz) Pls share.

That Juan Luna murdered his wife and mother-in-law in a jealous rage is the other side of love. Textbook history does not mention this. On the left is the wedding photo of Juan Luna and Paz Pardo de Tavera from the Ongpin collection, it is complete. The one on the right is from the Pardo de Tavera collection, Luna's head is torn out of history. Pls share.

Fernando Amorsolo painted this scene from the Battle for Manila in 1945. His handwritten notes describe explosions, balls of fire, a continuous infernal noise. The fighting rages beyond the Quiapo Pagoda.

Better known as a painter of cheer and sunlight, Fernando Amorsolo also drew, painted and documented the horrors of World War II. This sketch showing the prisoners of Bataan following a Japanese officer on horseback had a caption in Spanish that says "the horse is more handsome than the rider." If the Japanese had captured Amorsolo's sketchbook this and other drawings may have led to torture or death. Pls share.
