Killer Con – Recap 3

Killer Con Recap 3

If you missed my other Killer Con recaps, #1 is here, and #2 is here.

Killer Con continued after lunch with three 90-minute sessions. The first I attended was “A Crime Writer’s Guide to Murder Investigation” presented by Bruce Robert Coffin. In addition to being an author, he ran a homicide unit in Portland, Maine, which included 8 detectives and 4 crime scene technicians.

He began by telling us some of the realities of being a detective. I...

Killer Con – Recap 2

Killer Con – Recap 2

Did you miss Recap 1? It’s here.

Things started bright and early Friday morning. As in breakfast at 6, on the busses at 7. The actual sessions were held in Green Bay at the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College. I’m not sure why there wasn’t a suitable hotel in Green Bay, but the organizers had their reasons, I’m sure. It did add travel time to and from each day, though.

The first session was in the lecture hall, for their Shooting Scene Response – Live Scenario class. We w...

Writings And Wanderings

Writings And Wanderings – Celebrating a New Endeavor

a bottle of champagne with the cork flying out over several pieces of chocolate A while back, I talked about Substack as a new social media platform. I didn’t see it as something I was interested in, but given I’m letting the current manuscript marinate before I begin my edits, I looked into the platform more deeply.

One thing I didn’t want was a duplication of my blog posts. Then I realized I have content that I wrote for fun, or for a very limited (and outdated) distribution. Why not use the Substack platform to make th...

Don’t Lie to Me – Killer Con Recap 1 –

Don’t Lie to Me: Killer Con – Recap 1

Lying was the topic of the first formal session at Killer Con, but first, and extra I didn’t get into a previous post.

The first event at Killer Con was “Touch a Truck” on the day before sessions began. Vehicles and equipment filled an exhibit hall at the hotel, and their respective personnel were around to answer questions. (I brought home a little swag, which I’ll have for a lucky newsletter subscriber. Hint, hint.) I posted some pictures I took on my blog...

Friday Fotos – Killer Con Adjacent

Friday Fotos – Killer Con Adjacent

There wasn’t a lot of time to get out and take pictures at Killer Con (they kept us busy from morning to night), but I’ll share a few snaps I took on the trip. I’m calling them Killer Con Adjacent, since they’re not really of the conference itself.  I’ll share more I took during the conference  when I do my recaps. (You can click to enlarge the images.)

Have a nice weekend to those who celebrate.

Home Sweet Home

Home Sweet Home

I’m home. Home Sweet Home. A day later than my itinerary said I’d be here, but I’m home. The Killer Con  conference was great, and I’ll have recaps, but right now, I don’t have enough firing brain cells to do justice to a blog post.

I’m sure you’re sick of hearing about my travel trials and tribulations, but …

Picture of the departure board showing a 12:16 departure time.

Wishful Thinking

I was scheduled to leave Appleton for Minneapolis at 12:16 pm. Got to the airport in plenty of time, everything said we’d be on time (or as close to whatev...

Travel Trials and Tribulations

Travel Trials and Tribulations

Trials and Tribulations seem to follow me whenever I want to go somewhere. As a friend says, “If you have time to spare, go by air.”

Airport sign showing delayed flightI’m on my way home from Killer Con. I can only hope that the return trip is uneventful. But first, another travel story. My route was Denver – Minneapolis – Appleton. Although the conference sessions were held in Green Bay, the hotel was in Appleton, and the advice was to fly into that airport, which is only 15 minutes from the hotel ...

Friday Fotos – Touch A Truck

Friday Fotos – Touch A Truck

A few minutes before sessions start at Killer Con. Yesterday, we got to see all the cool toys that various responders use in their jobs. Here are a few.

That’s all I have time to share today. Busses are leaving soon.
Have a nice weekend for those who celebrate.

Off to Killer Con

Off to Killer Con and the Writers’ Police Academy

Banner for Killer Con Writers' Police Academy conference 2024

I’m working frantically to get the first draft of my current manuscript finished before I leave for the Writers’ Police Academy conference, Killer Con. My editor will be there, and I’d like to have some good news for her. Because of that, today’s post is a rerun from a day at the Writers’ Police Academy 2016. I know that ThrillerFest was a biggie this past weekend, but did they offer anything like this? I doubt it.

The Writers’ Police Academy is...

Friday Fotos – Signage

Friday Fotos – Signage

When we travel, I like to take pictures of signage. They’re usually grabbed on the fly, and with my phone. But for me, it’s more about what they say than the image quality. These were taken in New Zealand.

Sign reading Don't Feed The Kea from New Zealand

Sign saying No Bathing, No Washing Dishes, No Cookers or Cooking from New Zealand

Roadside sign saying
