From [info:] alfreda89 : Publishing, Printing, or Scam by Laura Resnick If you are thinking about self-publishing, you need to read this article.
"Self-publishing" and vanity-press scams (oh, sorry, "vanity publishing") are not forms of publishing. They are two distinct methods of being PRINTED, not PUBLISHED.

"Self-publishing" is a legitimate set of PRINT services and products offered to people with book-length projects that are not suitable for PUBLISHING (ex. family memoir, church-group cookbook...

We went to Sherwood Forest Faire yesterday, and had an excellent time. It's the first year it's been open, and it's very nice, much bigger and a better site than the Excalibur Faire at Smithville. About 95% of it is under tree cover, and it's very spread out to allow space for new booths and tents. There were a large number of food booths, including a two-story Italian restaurant. It's weird to see Renfair booths that look new, but by next year everything should be nice and weathered.

We're going to try to go to Sherwood Forest Faire this weekend. It's the first year for it, and the reports have been pretty good so far. I'll try to remember to take the camera.

This link was passed along by [info:] stinabat : For Uhura fans: The true story of MLK and Lt. Uhura I think most people who were into original Star Trek have heard this story, but in this interview Nichelle Nichols talks about it in a lot more detail, with a lot more about what Martin Luther King said, what Gene Roddenberr...

Story Rec

Story rec: The new Steampunk issue of Crossed Genres magazine is up, and it has ( [info:] jess_ka ) Jessica Reisman's story The Vostrasovitch Clockwork Animal and Traveling Forest Show at the End of the World. She read this story at ArmadilloCon last year, and it made me cry like a baby, but in a good cathartic way. So go, read, and comment. (Online magazines stories often don't get many comments, so the few they get are much much appreciated.)

Got to see friends who came into town yesterday and had a great time, during which I ate an entire pizza. But it was a really good pizza. We also got our tax stuff ready, and I cleaned out and rearranged some filing cabinets. I realized I hadn't gone through and gotten rid of old bank and credit card receipts since 2007. Yes, that would be about when stress ate my life. But I'm mostly caught up and now have places to keep stuff I actually need.

I'm still hoping my stress cough will go awa...

Subject line from spam I got this morning: Seduce the daughter of the oligarch with your rich style! No matter where you are, Swiss watches will tell you the time! That's hilarious on about three different levels.

From [info:] shsilver : Luis Soriano and his Biblioburro

It's the last two days for the [info:] helptheproject auction! There are lots of fun items up for bid, like food, books, jewelry. My item, an autographed hardcover of The Death of the Necromancer is here.

I had fun this morning, in that I was almost at the exit for the hospital when I remembered I had left the paperwork for my blood test in the kitchen. Turn around, drive back across town in morning traffic, get paperwork, head back to the hospital just as it starts raining. Rainstorm follows me across town, in time to turn and start back the other way when I leave. At least it only took the tech two tries to get my blood. (I can apparently will my veins to sink down inside my body at the ...
