Cat-tain’s Log: Episode 012

Cat-tain

Covid-19 through my cats for a loop.

They were already used to me working from home most of the time, but even as a full-time author, I wasn’t home 24/7. Whatever my cats did while I was away or working, stopped when suddenly, Erik and I were both home. 24/7. We didn’t leave on the weekends to go game, no one came over to game, no food deliverie...

Cat-tain’s Log: Episode 010

Cat-tain

Malley would’ve made a good desert cat. Being a Chartreux mix, he’s got the massive feet and head, plus the double-coated, water-resistant fur that a lo...

Cat-tain’s Log: Episode 008

Cat-tain

There’s a story behind Malley’s fascination with plumbing. We noticed early on that he would open cabinets to crawl underneath and get up against the pipes. When we first moved into the house we’re in now, we had to replace the refrigerator and chose to do so with one that had a water and ice maker. The first time my hu...

The State of the Union

Allowables by Nikki Giovanni

Allowables by Nikki Giovanni

Look at those last lines in this poem by Nikki Giovanni.

I don’t think / I’m allowed / to kill something / because I am / frightened.”

Powerful.

I’ve started, stopped, erased, rewritten, and pondered on this post many times over the last week, including at 3 AM when images painted my dreams red. At least for me, they were only dreams—something I could wake up from with ease—but for so many in this country, violence and racism is a part of life that must be faced dai...

Cat-tain’s Log: Episode 007

Cat-tain

There is a fine balance between Riley and Malley’s relationship. As brothers, they are very loving towards each other, but their love always results in bath-time turning into a good-natured battle. It almost resembles the squirmy toddler trying to escape their parent’s grasp when the parent is trying to wipe away some evidence of a snack. Malley will bathe Riley, who sits still for ten minutes or so before he wiggles and squirms away. Then Riley attacks Malley, holding him down while he furiousl...
