The Letter U

I saw a post today where someone was talking about how their memories of RBG were stolen and replaced by fear, by those who would destroy our country. I found it a poetic post, but my partner’s response was, “But they want us afraid.” So I began thinking about it, and I realized that after my fear, like someone grieving, my feelings shifted to anger and motion. 


And so I did what I always do, I wrote…a poem this time. May your memories be a resistance, RBG.

DiNozzo has always been special. That’s not to say that Malley and Riley aren’t–they are!–but DiNozzo began life with certain challenges most kitties don’t. Rather than just being a carrier, DiNozzo came to us at 6 weeks old with active, chronic feline herpes. He’s contagious and thus, will spread it to any cats we get. (We didn’t know this until he’d already given it to Riley and Malley.)

All Work & No Play Makes One a Dull Person

All three of our boys have me well trained, which is to say that when I’m working, they know that if they really want attention, all it takes is one bellyflop or upside-down head turn and work is pushed aside for some scritches or snuggles. Sounds of Night

In the same way that a new parent is attuned to every sound their new child makes, pet parents are the same. It can be three in the morning when that familiar hurking noise reaches our sleep-addled minds, and we’re up, enzyme and towel in hand to clean up the cat puke. Hopefully before we step in it!

It’s a Gas!

Riley is the weirdest cat we’ve ever had. All of our kitties sleep on the bed and in the winter, all three burrow under the covers with us, but Riley is different. Riley likes gas. He likes flatulence.

Malley, if he farts, will startle himself and run away from the smell. DiNozzo will just give you this proud look as if he’s given you a gift. But Riley? Riley loves the smell of farts, especially during the middle of the night. Everyone farts at night. Because of this, Riley’s favorit...
