Words of Comfort: "God told Abraham to sacrifice his son to prove his love."

A skeptic asked: "God told Abraham to sacrifice his son to prove his love."

Ray answered: God told Abraham to "offer" Isaac, and when he was about to kill him, God stopped him (see Genesis 22). This is a Bible "type"-- of God sending His "only-begotten Son" to suffer for the sin of the world. Any dirt we try and throw at God will always come back down on us, because He is without sin.

Words of Comfort: Slaves in the Bible.

A skeptic asked: "Why does God tell people to own slaves?"

Ray answered: If a Hebrew was in debt he could work off that debt by being a "bond-servant" or "slave."  We put negative connotations on the word "slave" because Americans kidnapped Africans (God prescribed the death sentence for kidnapping), sold them as bond-servants and treated them with great cruelty.

Words of Comfort: Best shot.

An atheist friend sent me a text recently and suggested that we make a movie that gives the existence of God our "best shot." I told him that we didn't need to do that because everyone knows that the Creator exists, but some pretend He doesn't exist because they think it frees them from moral responsibility.

He said that he was living proof that I was wrong about that. My reply was that either my atheist friend or God was lying, and it's impossible for God to lie. I choose to trust God a...

Words of Comfort: Our holding cell.

I saw a movie when I was seven years old that scared the living daylights out of me. It was called "The Scarlet Pimpernel."  It was about the French Revolution and at one point a group of ugly ladies sat around the guillotine waiting for people to have their heads lopped off. When the chopper came down they would cackle like witches, and knit another stitch onto their already very long scarves.

I remember thinking "Imagine what it was like for those a poor victims, waiting in a hold...

Words of Comfort: Learn from this man's mistake...

A man once climbed up to his A-frame roof to paint it. It was very steep, so to paint it he tossed a rope over the roof, tied it to the bumper of his car, climbed back onto the roof, secured it around his waist, leaned back and began painting.

All was well until his wife, not knowing what he had done, came out of the house with her car keys in hand, got into the car and drove off, pulling him up and over the roof. The man was seriously injured.  We can learn a great lesson from this...

Words of Comfort: Own understanding.

An atheist (Mike) asked: "How do you approach the evangelism side of life in light of Proverbs 3:5-7? It explicitly tells you *not* to rely on your own understanding. Even if you claim you are 'just a messenger of my god's understanding' you are *still* using your own understanding of scripture in order to say that."

Ask anyone the color of the sky and most will say that it's blue, when it's not. Ask them if they have seen water shimmering on the road on a hot day, when it's just a mirag...

Words of Comfort: A subtle device.

It is God’s prerogative to punish for sin. We are to forgive. Never let bitterness for being wronged cling to you. Give it to the Lord and, with His help, forget it. Sinners are going to Hell and you have been commanded to preach to them. Unforgiveness is one of the enemy’s most subtle devices to hinder you from such an important task.

Words of Comfort: Germination.

Never be discouraged when it comes to sharing your faith. Biblical evangelism is simply planting the seed of God’s Word in the soil of sinners’ hearts. God makes the seed grow. The day will come, either in this life or in the next, when you will see your spiritual “offspring”—those who have been born again through your faithfulness.

Words of Comfort: Shine in the world.

We should never fear to go into the world, because God is with us. We are to be in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom we shine of lights in the world. We are seeking lost sheep to bring to the Good Shepherd. See John 10:1–16.

Words of Comfort: Forgiven.

The life of Joseph is a foreshadow of the life of Jesus. Joseph forgave his brothers, the sons of Israel, explaining that God used their act of betrayal to bring him to Egypt, so he could save their lives.
Jesus, during the trial before His crucifixion, told Pilate that his authority to sentence Him to death was due only to God’s will. “You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above” (John 19:11). Jesus, too, forgave those who crucified Him (Luke 23:34).
