Suzy Stewart Dubot – Interview

Welcome Suzy Stewart Dubot

Author of multiple books in multiple genre including: Sail Away; Square Peg in a Round Hole; and Confused Memories.

(Links to where books may be found are at the end of this interview.)

Do you write under any other name(s)?

I don’t write under any other name, although using initials might help broaden the range of people reading certain genres, such as thrillers, action books etc. For example, men might not be as inclined to read a sci-fi story if they think it has been written by a woman.

Please tell us a little about yourself.

Product of an American soldier in the U.S. Air Force and an English woman in the Royal Air Force (WRAF), I was born and lived in Ohio until I was 8. My parents then divorced and separated, so, along with two brothers, I spent a good deal of time travelling back and forth between the States and Britain. I’m grateful for having had the opportunity to experience two very different cultures. The irony is, however, I have now lived in France longer than I have either the US or the UK.

What first inspired you to write?

It was a very bad paperback Regency romance that got me writing. I was convinced I could do better, and I hope I have!

In what genre(s) do you prefer to write?

I’m a romantic at heart. Having been exposed to Georgette Heyer and Jane Austen from an early age, I began by writing Regency romances. From there it was an easy step to shift to writing about time travel between the Regency period and the present day. When one begins playing with time, it is then easy to move on to science fiction/fantasy.

Are you working on another book?

I’m two-thirds of my way to finishing a Regency ghost mystery which takes place in modern times. It’s called ‘Hint of a…Ghost!’

If your books have required research: What do you consider the best resources?

British history has always been my favourite subject, so I have never balked at buying history books. I have also had the good fortune of being able to visit many stately homes in Britain. Because I have now lived in France for almost thirty-five years, a couple of my Regency romances have involved the Napoleonic Wars. Consequently, I have reference books to do with that period, including ones about military doctors. Fashion plates of that time are useful when describing what one of my characters is wearing. Mrs. Beeton’s book on Household Management has been a great source of information touching on the Victorian period.

And naturally, the internet is invaluable for tracking down obscure details. There is always someone out there who can help. I’ve asked questions on Quora.

Do you consider your books convey messages to readers?

I think that the one message which has repeated itself in several of my books is that ‘good can come from bad.’

What advice would you give to authors who are just starting out?

Like singing, writing is good for the soul. Unfortunately, not everyone sings on key and the same thought can be applied to writing. Your work may not be good enough to sell, especially with so many independent writers self-publishing. Before you invest in an expensive editor, I would suggest publishing some works for free to get feedback from readers. They might say the storyline is good but it needs editing. That should tell you your next step if you really sense the writer in you.

Biographies, autobiographies, memoirs: What advice would you give, about using real names and descriptions, to authors who write in these genre? I ask because many raise concerns about the issue.

Personally, I would not use real names in an autobiography (except my own name) or memoir, unless the people were dead. There’s always the threat of legal action for any of the above-mentioned, if real names are used. As I only write for my own pleasure, I would not want to open that can of worms.

Do you self-edit or do you think a book should only be professionally edited?

I mostly self-edit with the help of a couple of friends who beta-read for me. They pick up spelling mistakes or inconsistencies. I haven’t used a professional editor, but if your novel is good and you want to give it every chance, use a professional editor, if you can afford it. I can’t.

How do you go about marketing your books?

I have acknowledged Smashwords in several of my books for giving me readers when I first began publishing six years ago. I still publish through them as well as Amazon. That puts an independent writer’s books out in a wide marketplace.

It is a well-known fact that book covers are what get a reader’s attention in the first place. If you’re wanting to make money from your books, you really need a professional cover. That can be expensive…The blurb then hooks them, so be sure the blurb is good too.

Key words, which you fill in when publishing, help people to locate books on certain subjects. They are important.

I have to admit that being retired, I’m not writing with the objective of making a living from it. As a result, I give stories away for free. Sometimes, I only put them for free over a weekend, for example. If readers like what and how I write, they may look beyond the free books and buy others, so I suggest the occasional free story.

On Facebook, I have pages devoted to my books. Slowly, people have been subscribing to those pages so they know when I publish something new. I have occasionally promoted my Facebook post for 5€, but no noticeable increase in sales. It has brought me to the attention of a lot of people, though. Who knows, they might buy one of my books at a later date.

The same goes for having a web page. I have a free one where I also publish updates on new books as well as blogging on it.

The more you spread your name around, the more it will pop-up on an internet search!

How important do you think reviews are?

Favourable reviews are what keeps an author writing. The problem is that not everyone writes one when they’ve finished reading a book and some readers can be mean when they do leave one. You have to be discerning when reading your reviews.

If you consider reviews important, how do you go about obtaining them for your books?

It is always gratifying to have positive reviews, but I have no idea how to get them. Giving a book away for free doesn’t guarantee reviews, and I don’t like the idea of asking for reviews in exchange for a book, although some authors do.

Do you have a preferred genre for when you read?

I am ready to read almost anything as long as it’s not gruesome. I’m too old to read gruesome.

This is an age old question but one I consider of interest. If you were stranded on a desert island, which three books would you like to have with you?

One of my all-time favourite books is ‘Love of Seven Dolls’ by Paul Gallico

‘Countess Below Stairs’ by Eva Ibbotson

‘Time and Again’ by Jack Finney.

Pinterest – Buyable Pins (Selling from Pinterest)

No doubt, like the writer, many independent (indie) authors will have noted Pinterest’s introduction of ‘Buyable Pins’ (Pins from which a user may directly purchase an item) with interest. After all, most authors, whether indie self-publishers or traditionally published, are constantly looking for additional ways to engage with their fans and readers. And, if there is the potential to sell more books, most will jump at the option.

Note: This topic is being discussed from the perspective of an author, especially indie authors, and does assume the reader has some fundamental knowledge/understanding of Pinterest. Nevertheless, some, if not most, of the points discussed will apply equally to those who seek to sell items other than books.

At present, the ‘Buyable Pin’ facility is effectively in beta testing and has been restricted to a small selection of United States of America (USA) based businesses. In addition, they may only be available to users of USA based software equipment (computers, tablets, smartphones). Nonetheless, this is a topic all authors, no matter where based, should be made aware of in preparation for future enhancements.

How ‘Buyable Pins’ work

The ‘Buy’ button in a ‘Buyable Pin” provides for users to utilise an ‘Add to Bag’ facility; similar to the ‘Add to basket’ in other online retail sites. This links back to the retailer’s store, wherever or in whatever format it may be; digital, online or physical.

With Buyable Pins, Pinterest enables credit card/Paypal details to be entered at the checkout without the user having to be directed to another site/location. Certainly an advantage as customers may be put off if they have to click through multiple pages/sites before being able to place an order. Once entered, the order details and payment information are sent direct to the retailer for them to process (Pinterest has no part in the actual processing of orders or payments). The intention is to provide an easy flow checkout experience while allowing the retailer to still own the end-to-end customer relationship.

Who May Sell

As already mentioned, the system is currently in beta testing and consequently, limited to a small number of selected companies. Nonetheless, it is probable the basic requirements will be the same for future applicants as it is for those already selected.

For a business to be eligible it must meet certain criteria:

Must be offering high quality products;
Must not be offering prohibited products e.g. customisable products (software); non-physical goods; live animals; alcohol; adult products/services; etc. (A comprehensive list may be found in Pinterest’s help pages);
Products must have authenticity. (Promoted goods should express what/who the company is and what they offer.);
Content must not comprise spam or anything bad;
Must comply with laws and regulations;
Content must NOT contain: explicit material; self-harm promotion; anything discriminatory; etc.;
Content must not infringe intellectual property rights or any other rights;
Must not suggest Pinterest sponsors or endorses them or their products;
Must have a clear checkout process e.g. statements regarding price and product availability; taxes and fees; estimated shipping/delivery costs and timings; return and refund policy;
Must have a good customer service support system.

Users should note, Pinterest will remove or block:

Material that does not comply with the above requirements.
Accounts that comprise spam; artificial boosting; repetitive unwanted posts;etc.
Accounts and content where it is apparent people have been paid to distribute the content in large volume.
Buyable pins and accounts where there has been a lot of negative feedback.

Note: All the above make clear the necessity for users to ensure content is of good quality and genuine. Any attempt to ‘game’ the system will be quickly noticed and bring the appropriate response.

Account requirements:

To be eligible to use ‘Buyable Pins’ users must have set up a business account either by creating a new one or by converting an existing private/personal account. A valid e-mail or telephone number, by which customers may easily contact them, must be included in the ‘About’ section.

Users must:

Prove they have a valid ‘After sell’ procedure e.g. customers will receive a confirmation of the transaction including: order details; price; taxes; fees; shipping information and contact details;
Accept they, not Pinterest, are responsible for ensuring: customers receive the product; the product is properly packaged; contact details are enclosed; product is delivered within stated time frame (stated as being within seven calendar days);
Confirm they have an adequate return and refund policy e.g.: will respond to customer enquiries within forty-eight hours; complete any return or refund within timeframe agreed with customer (usually within thirty calendar days); make full refund or exchange for damaged goods or as otherwise agreed with customer;
If an item is found to be out of stock will: update the listing within thirty minutes; contact the customer within twenty-four hours; respond to enquiries within forty-eight hours; keep order open if customer agrees to new delivery date; cancel order if customer does not agree;
Acknowledge they are responsible for dealing with any dispute. Note: If a customer contacts Pinterest, they will forward the issue to the account holder who must get back to the customer within twenty-four hours.

How to Apply

Companies may apply for ‘Buyable Pins’ through two affiliates: Shopify who have partnered with Pinterest; or Big Commerce.

The Pinterest guidance notes also state, where not eligible under existing conditions, companies may apply to go on a waiting list at Demandware. However, this is not the case! There is no waiting list! Besides, Demandware only deals with companies registered with them but even for them there is no waiting list. (The writer has suggested to Pinterest the notes be amended as they are currently misleading and cause confusion.)

Naturally, due to how helpful such a facility may prove, many Pinterest users will be interested to know when the buyable pins option is extended to others. There are two ways to get the information:

In account settings, ensure the ‘Announcements about new features’ is enabled. This is the fourth option under ‘Pick which group boards you hear about’. Click the button so it turns red.
Regularly check Pinterest’s blog: https://business.pinterest.com/en/blog (There is no option to enter details for the purpose of receiving update notifications.)

Some reasons why a company may not be accepted:

Focus is on products not permitted/allowed (see above).
Business does not meet transaction quality requirements.
Company website requires login or is not available.
Product leads to system error messages.
Pinterest profile image does not reflect business.
Pins contain: misspellings; excessive capitalisation or symbol use.
Pins contain unacceptable language or content e.g. shocking; sensational; overly sexual; etc.

Conclusion

With an estimated 70 – 100 million monthly active users, Pinterest makes sense as a selling social media site. Estimates also suggest ninety-three percent of users use Pinterest to plan a purchase and eighty-seven percent purchase because of Pinterest.

The existing beta testing limitations (USA based companies only) means those in other territories may not currently avail themselves of the option. Nevertheless, it is understood Pinterest intends to role the facility out to others in the future.

Business’s need to have a good quality and extensive supporting structure.

The business requirements may mean the facility is, realistically, not an option for authors, especially indie self-publishers. However, it is known some indie authors have set up their own companies and, if they truly are able to meet the support requirements, it may be possible for them to gain acceptance but, under present conditions, they will have to prove the fact.

There is suggestion the facility may, eventually, be rolled out to the ‘general’ public. If that is so, then it is possible requirements may be less restrictive though the writer, at present, cannot see how unless Pinterest is prepared to take on some of the tasks. Doubtful but who knows what the future may hold. Perhaps companies such as Shopify and Big Commerce, in the interests of gaining further clients and income, will be willing to provide additional facilities to make the process easier for indie entrepreneurs, whether an author or not. Be very nice if they do though the inevitable consequent costs may limit an indie author’s ability to participate.

Dustin Stevens – Interview

Welcome: Dustin Stevens

Author of multiple books including 21 Hours.

Thank you so much for having me!

21 Hours, and most of my work, is written under my own name, Dustin Stevens. Earlier this year I began also writing under the pseudonym T.R. Kohler, providing a second platform for new stories/series/characters, as well as allowing me to publish more frequently.

(Links to all books are at the end of this interview.)

Please tell us a little about yourself.

I guess the single biggest term a lot of folks would use is nomadic. I’m originally from southern Ohio and later relocated to west Tennessee, went to college in Boston, grad school in Montana, and have lived in a dozen different places since, stretching from Washington D.C. to Honolulu.

As for what some may consider fun facts, I played college football, raise English bulldogs, still have a southern drawl, stand six and a half feet tall, and am a terrible surfer.

Goodreads – Book Listing Anomaly

The following will be of interest to both authors and readers, though the issue will be of primary concern to authors.

For the few who may not know, here is how the site describes itself:

‘Goodreads is the world’s largest site for readers and book recommendations. Our mission is to help people find and share books they love. Goodreads launched in January 2007.’

The issue under discussion relates to which editions of a book are listed in the Goodreads site. Logically, an author would anticipate, and appreciate, all available editions of their books to be shown. However, though, on the whole, this does occur there are some drawbacks: principally related to incorrect/erroneous editions. These are editions where there has been some sort of error and which have been withdrawn.

Many will probably already be aware of the following (Goodreads Policy) however, it is considered worthwhile highlighting the issue for those who are new to book publishing and to Goodreads.

The Anomaly

Goodreads insists upon listing all editions of a book ever published even if they have been withdrawn/unpublished. For example: The initial cover to one of T. R. Robinson’s recent books contained a minor, one letter, mistake (a typo) that was not spotted until after it had been submitted for publication. A revised cover was quickly submitted, effectively withdrawing the book from retail sites while it was being replaced. No copies of the book where ever purchased. Nevertheless, the editions with the erroneous covers are listed along with the corrected editions. Despite the fact that none had ever been sold and all the retail sites only have the corrected editions available, Goodreads would not withdraw the previous editions from their listing. This does appear incongruous but there are valid, if annoying, especially for authors, reasons for this policy, as outlined below.

The Policy

Here are the reasons Goodreads will not allow any edition of a book to be deleted from the site:

‘Deleting published books from our system is against policy. Goodreads is striving to be a complete database of all published works, including works that are out-of-print. We like our members to be able to add their exact edition to their virtual shelves. Just as a library would not remove a record from its catalog, so do we not remove books from our database.’

‘If you find that a book with a specific ISBN is already listed with a different cover, it is likely the ISBN was reused for a later/earlier reprinting. If that is the case, you can manually add a new edition to the database that would be considered an ‘alternate cover edition.’ This policy is in place because it is not possible to upload multiple covers of a book, and changing the cover of an existing edition is a violation of Goodreads policy. Some people may have added the existing edition with that specific cover because it is the one they own.’

More information and guidance may be found in the Goodreads Help section.

Of course, it makes perfect sense, when a book’s cover has, for aesthetic purposes, been changed, for both to be shown. As stated, readers may have read, reviewed and added to their book shelves, an earlier edition and will therefore wish to retain that identity.

It is however, frustrating for authors to have incorrect editions shown but most will understand, and, reluctantly perhaps, accept Goodreads policy. In truth they have little choice.

Partial Solution

Goodreads authors (have to be registered as an author in the Goodreads system to be recognised as such) do have the option of setting a ‘default edition’ of a book. This enables them to select which edition will be predominantly displayed when users search for the title. They should however, note if the user selects the ‘All Editions’ option, all will be displayed including the erroneous/incorrect ones. This is the best option available to authors and, in this scenario, having the other editions listed within the system should not become a major issue. If it does, authors may always actively inform their readers, fans and followers of the situation.

How to set a default edition:

‘1) Navigate to the book’s page. Be sure you have selected the edition you wish to become the default (primary) edition.

2) Click “edit details” below the book’s description.

3) On the right side of the page, click “Set this book as the primary edition for this work”. It’s about midway down the page.

Only Goodreads Authors can set the default edition at this time.’

Conclusion

There is no argument, for authors, the listing of previous, incorrect, editions of a book is frustrating. This is particularly so when no copies have been purchased or given to readers. No one likes to have erroneous copies of their work displayed for all to see.

Goodreads policy, especially regarding where a book cover has been changed for aesthetic reasons, is understandable. It can cause confusion for readers accustomed to a particular cover when a different (often radically different) one is displayed.

The partial workaround of selecting a default edition is an asset that authors in this situation should avail themselves of. Most users of the site are unlikely to actively search for alternative editions.

The matter simply highlights the need for authors to, as thoroughly as possible, edit their work. Not just the manuscript but also the cover and book metadata.

Authors and readers have no option but to live with the situation. Nevertheless, the policy has been in place for a long time and, as far as the writer is aware, has not resulted in any major issues or difficulties for authors.

Note: All quotes have been copied from Goodreads help.

David P Perlmutter – Interview

Welcome: David P Perlmutter

Author of several books including:

Wrong Place Wrong Time

(Links to all books are at the end of this interview.)

Please tell us a little about yourself.

After living in Portugal for 7 years, I returned to the UK and now live in London, England and am a very proud father of four children and have one grandson.

Apart from writing, I spend a lot of time promoting and marketing authors across the world on social media platforms.

I am a volunteer Cancer Campaigns Ambassador for Cancer Research UK, working with my local MP and the media on cancer related policy issues and campaigns. I also raise money for the charity by arranging book signing events at CRUK shops all over London and the home counties, donating a percentage of book sales.

I also enjoy engaging with my 40,000 plus followers on Twitter @davepperlmutter and I invite my readers to join me there in ‘conversation’.

What first inspired you to write?

It was while living in Portugal several years ago, that I started to write my first book, a true story called, Wrong Place Wrong Time as a blog, but a friend who is also an editor read the first couple of chapters and told me it was too good for a blog, it must be a book. Since then the book has become a #1 BESTSELLER on Amazon with hundreds of 5* reviews and has been traditionally published and is in most major book shops.

My second book, Five Weeks, is another true story and catalogues a trip to America during which I was almost left for dead in a Pennsylvanian wood. My most recent book, is yet again a true story and called 24 Hours In New York. I have also written eight books on marketing for the indie author in my, My Way brand, which can be found on Amazon and on my website. Within the past couple of week’s I have released 3 BOX SETS of all the above which also can be downloaded from Amazon.

In what genre(s) do you prefer to write?

I do write non-fiction, as in true stories and also marketing books for the indie author.

How/Where do you get the ideas for your stories?

As my stories are based on true events, my ideas are with me.

Are you working on another book?

Yes. It’s a fiction called, One Year. I am only 4,000 words in, so this is a work in progress. The title of the book may change too.

If your books have required research: What do you consider the best resources?

I Google or visit the British Library.

Do you consider your books convey messages to readers?

Mainly that the grass is never greener!

What advice would you give to authors who are just starting out?

Just write what you feel.

Do you self-edit or do you think a book should only be professional edited?

Being dyslexic I need an editor. Thankfully my partner is an editor. She is more than that thou!

How do you go about marketing your books?

Every day I’m on my social media platforms. I promote 24/7 to get my books out there. Its free and worldwide exposure. Writing book marketing books have also helped. Many feature authors, so also giving them exposure.

How important do you think reviews are?

Very, no matter what rating. It gives readers a choice to whether to download the book or not, plus its good for being recommended by Amazon.

If you consider reviews are important, how do yo go about obtaining them for your books?

I don’t go about obtaining them. I have never and will never pay for a review or request one. I just wait and if readers want to review after reading my books then they will review.

Do you have a preferred genre for when you read?

Mainly true stories. I must get back to reading thou.

This is an age old question but one I consider of interest. If you were stranded on a desert island, which three books would you like to have with you?

To be honest, three of my stories as they feature of course my life but also my family. It means they will still be close by my side. Hope that makes sense?

Facebook – Engagement Algorithm – Changes

As most social media users know the option to ‘Like’, or its equivalent, a post is a simple, quick, way to let someone know their post has been enjoyed and appreciated. In addition, liking a post usually results in further posts published by that person being displayed in a timeline and newsfeed. However, as any long term user of Facebook will know, the frequency with which these posts are shown has consistently changed as Facebook amends its algorithms. Many have been frustrated by the constant changes as they may no longer guarantee, without paying a fee, posts by relatives, friends, colleagues and acquaintance will be shown. It is a disappointment to most that Facebook has tended to become far more income orientated than it used to be. Even when researching some of the following information, within the help pages, the system kept pointing to the advertisement feature even though advertising had not been mentioned in the search criteria.

It can be difficult to keep up with Facebook changes because they now seem to be so frequent. In January 2017 further updates where made to the algorithm that determines where posts will rank in an audiences newsfeed. The change affects three main areas: Video; Authenticity; Trending.

Video

The ability to add video within posts was added not so long ago. Not something the writer has utilised but it is apparent many have taken to it in a major way. Now, any video that has a greater completion rate will be rated more highly. The ‘completion rate’ is determined by length of time watched and percentage completed. With the abundance of video posts now appearing some, especially those short of time, may only watch the first section of a video and then move on. This naturally impacts upon the identified ‘completion rate’.

Authenticity

For most this will be the most important aspect.

If a post is identified as being less authentic it will be ranked lower in the algorithm than posts considered authentic.

What identifies a post as being less authentic?

There are principally two areas: Negative feedback and inappropriate content. For example:

Negative feedback: e.g. Pages being ‘Unliked’; Posts being hidden; All posts from a particular page being hidden.

Inappropriate content: e.g. Posts requesting likes; comments; shares.

Note: Even if the content of a post is otherwise authentic, with the new algorithm, asking for the above will more than likely result in it being identified as less authentic and consequently, not being added to a newsfeed or, if added, appearing far lower down.

Naturally, pornography, excessive violence and other such material are inappropriate under the normal terms and conditions.

The new algorithm will also identify if a page continually contains content that is identified as being less authentic.

What is considered authentic?

The following will improve a post’s ranking.

Good content that audiences are engaging with.
Multiple, positive, comments (unsolicited!).
Multiple ‘Likes’ (unsolicited!).
Frequent sharing (unsolicited!).
How recent: e.g. within the last few minutes, perhaps up to an hour. (Older posts will, by default, and logically, be ranked lower.)
Content is of immediate interest (see ‘Trending’ below.).
Relate to a topic a user has shown a particular and consistent interest in. (This relates more to the individual than the general audience.)

Trending

Posts will be given a higher ranking if they:

contain content that relates to something concurrently in the headlines or that is of general interest to users e.g. sport event; political activity; health issue; celebrity news; etc.; and/or
are receiving a lot of real-time comments and likes.

Note: This sort of popularity can change hour by hour and even moment by moment. Consequently, even if a post has received a lot of engagement it can quickly fall within the ranking system.

Conclusion

Over recent years Facebook has regularly amended its procedures, algorithms and systems. For the average user, it can be hard to keep track and pace.

The changes have, generally, resulted in less exposure for posts. There is no guarantee, without making a payment, as to whose newsfeed a post will be added to.

It has to be accepted Facebook has become more of a business and consequently has a tendency to increasingly focus upon income. In fairness, it is providing a communication/sharing service that many avail themselves of for free.

Users need to be far more aware of what they are posting. In principle they need to generate good content that people engage with and that will not result in a post being identified as ‘less authentic’.

Users must NOT try to ‘influence’ the system by asking for likes, comments and shares. The new algorithm will result in the post, and the user page, if it is consistent, being identified as ‘less authentic’ and consequently being ranked much lower compared to other posts. In effect this could mean it will rarely, or perhaps never, be seen.

Even, with the limitations imposed by the changes, Facebook remains a popular and useful social media site that two billion monthly users (as at June 2017) are happy to use. For those independent (indie) people seeking to gain attention to their products and who do not have the resources to pay for formal advertising, the new limitations can be frustrating. Nevertheless, there remains a vast audience, some of who they may be able to reach if they post quality and relevant content.

Square Peg in a Round Hole and Confused Memories – two books by Suzy Stewart Dubot

Suzy Steward Dubot is a prolific author of a few novels, multiple short stories and a variety of essay length tales. Some are memoir, others fiction in a variety of genre. The first book to be reviewed below is a very short, essay length, memoir which is why this unusual step of reviewing two books together has been taken.

Square Peg in a Round Hole by Suzy Stewart Dubot

This short memoir is a counterpart to another of the author’a memoirs, ‘Sail Away’.

Though it is short (960 words) this memoir provides a nice insight into 1950’s British life. Perhaps even more so because matters are seen from the viewpoint of someone, who up to this point, had only lived in the United States of America, a very different culture, especially back then.

The descriptions of homes and school certainly bring to light how life really was in those days. Something, those who lived in that era will probably have forgotten and certainly those born more recently will have little or no conception of. Even television period dramas do not really convey how life was. However, with this memoir the reader will gain a real sense of the times.

The whole tale is enhanced by the author mixing objective observations and personal experiences in the telling.

Four stars (4*).

The book is only available in digital format.

Confused Memories by Suzy Stewart Dubot

This short story is described as being fiction within the fantasy genre. The reference to ‘memories’ is what first attracted attention.

This is not only a fun story but also provides realistic insights. It shows how many people like to recall past events and occurrences. Some may remember the old expression ‘Rose coloured spectacles’ (How things may appear to look better in hind site). The tale also exposes how memories can sometimes be incomplete and less accurate than the truth.

What if someone could reconstruct something from the past – would it be as they remember? Would it comfort? With such a short story (2,040 words) it is not possible to say more without spoiling it for potential readers.

Readers: With time between appointments; While commuting; Just looking for a quick fun read; etc. would enjoy this tale.

Four stars (4*).

The book is only available in digital format.

Wattpad

The majority of ‘book orientated’ internet users will more than likely have heard of Wattpad even though they may not have used the site.

What is Wattpad?

Originating in 2006, it is a free online storytelling community where writers of all sorts may submit their works: essays, articles, novels, short stories, etc. The site has recently been extended to also allow for television content. An important point to note, especially by authors: This, in all respects, is a FREE site. In other words, authors accept they will not receive any direct financial benefit from uploading their works.

As always, this topic is being approached from an author’s perspective. However, it must be born in mind Wattpad is not limited to those who self or traditionally publish books. It is open to all, with the majority publishing whatever they wish (does not have to be a story or novel) straight into Wattpad and never publishing elsewhere.

An important aspect is the ability for writers and readers to connect and exchange comments, ideas and suggestions regarding the uploaded content.

Fifty percent (50%) of users are based in the United States of America. The other half are based in multiple countries including United Kingdom, Canada, Philippines, Australia, Russia, Libya, Jamaica, United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, India and more.

Ninety percent (90%) of users are readers NOT authors or writers. Though some aspire to the writing craft the majority have stated they have no such ambition.

Most of the ‘authors’ who do use the site are teenagers who do not publish elsewhere. For them, Wattpad is a good learning place where they, if they have a long term desire to be an author, may start to master the craft.

Genere

Without doubt Romance is the most popular. Nevertheless, Fan Fiction; Teen Fiction; Werewolf are also popular. Of course, especially bearing in mind the extent of the site, there are other more general as well as random genre. In truth many more authors are now considering the site including professional, successful, established authors.

Estimates suggest there are one thousand (1,000) story uploads per day.

Author Benefits

Although the system allows authors to upload complete novels it is more usual for them to add their stories in segments. This may be random or chapter by chapter which ever suites the work and author aims. There are multiple aspects from which authors may benefit.

Beta Readers

The site has been specifically designed to allow users to comment, vote (more about that in a moment), and share thoughts, ideas and suggestions. This, in effect, facilitates beta reading without the author having to submit individual requests. Only an arrogant, foolish author would consider they have nothing to learn from readers no matter their age or background. Everyone is unique and often have a different take on a subject as well as differing likes, tastes and enjoyments. Actively listening to a variety of observations and comments usually assists an author and may bring to light anomalies etc. they would not be aware of otherwise.

Recognition

There are three primary facilities within the system which may provide authors with widespread recognition: ‘Hot Lists’; ‘Featured Story List’; ‘Annual Competitions’.

Hot Lists: Basically these are where the most popular works are shown. Popularity is principally governed by a voting system. Besides being able to comment, readers also have the option to vote on each segment/chapter of a work as they read them. The number of votes dictate where the work will appear in a list.

Authors are permitted to vote for their own work and to ask relatives, friends and acquaintances to do so. The only requirement is they have actually read the work. To vote without doing so is not only dishonest but is also against Wattpad’s rules. To gain the best advantage, it is best if all the solicited votes are made on the same day. This causes the book/work/segment to rise very quickly up the lists. It should be born in mind votes are in respect of EACH segment/chapter consequently, relatives, friends, etc. should be encouraged to vote consistently for each part on designated days.

Featured Story List: Addition to this list is at Wattpad’s discretion. As a general rule the works listed are ones that have been approved by both staff and an editorial review board. The author will have been approached beforehand. Though the site is principally geared toward the amateur, younger, writer, self-published independent (indie) and professional authors/writers do get featured.

Authors do not have to wait to be approached, they may submit a request to be featured but must bare in mind it is always at the discretion of Wattpad’s staff and editorial review board whether a work does get featured.

Annual Competitions: Authors/writers may participate in these as they wish. Success will obviously result in users becoming more aware of the author and their work.

Publicity/Marketing

Authors should be aware, probably due to the younger demographic of users, they are unlikely to achieve many, if any, sales by uploading their books to the site. However, there are other benefits:

The ‘serialisation’ method of uploading makes content more mobile friendly and through the comment/discussion facility authors and readers are able to establish a more realistic, and possibly more in-depth, relationship.
Some authors have noted increased ‘Adds’ to book shelves and ‘To be read’ lists on the Goodreads book/reading site.
Some have gained new readers, fans and followers.
Professional authors have started using the site because it enables them to connect with readers and to generate ‘marketing awareness’. Of course, this also applies to indie authors.
Obviously by adding a work there is an automatic increase in potential publicity.
Without abusing the system, authors may mention forthcoming publications, especially if it is part of a series of which the uploaded work is part.

Publishing deals

Wattpad has worked with some publishers to get writers recognised and published.

Some publishers have approached popular Wattpad authors/writers with publishing contract offers. Presumably ‘popular’ means the book has gained a high percentage of votes and has been featured in either the ‘Hot’ or ‘Featured Story’ list.

Reader Benefits

Obviously, readers benefit by having a considerable amount of reading material available to them free of charge.

The ability to comment and vote enables them to have input into how a story is developed. As stated above, many users do not aspire to be writers but many do like to have some input into a stories development.

Issues/Constraints

There are a few that need to be considered:

Copyright

There have been problems with copyrighted material, for which an author has not granted republication rights, being uploaded. To help deal with this, Wattpad have introduced an ‘Author In Charge’ facility that allows authors to identify and remove infringed content.

Authors should be aware, though they may state their work is copyrighted, by uploading it to the site they are making it widely available and that, despite laws and legal constraints, there are those who will always seek to abuse, and profit from, this availability.

Age Related

Wattpad’s demographic is primarily comprised of younger readers. Though it has been stated the majority are teenagers, the writer, has found many are in fact school children. Consequently, authors should take care as to the nature and content of what they upload. This became an issue for the writer because the books uploaded were factual and frequently recorded cruel and brutal treatment, unsuitable for younger readers. Primarily due to this factor, the books have been withdrawn and the account closed.

Time Commitment

One author who gained great success, including sales, through the site did confess to effectively utilise Wattpad requires a very real, dedicated, time commitment. Not just to upload material but to also interact with the readers and to respond in timely form to comments, suggestions, questions and observations.

In addition, authors should also be reading, voting and commenting on other peoples work. It is unfair and unrealistic to do otherwise. Wattpad is a community that by its nature requires across-the-board interaction.

Conclusion

The idea behind Wattpad is a good one, especially for the younger author/writer and reader.

The potential for authors to gain increased exposure and recognition is a real asset.

There are constraints and limitations: Possible copyright infringement; Time commitment; Age demographic; Unlikely to result in sales.

Authors should be aware, with an estimated forty-five million users, it remains difficult for them to gain the broad exposure they would like, without a considerable amount of work and time commitment, and not necessarily even then.

Of course, bearing in mind the age demographic and a large percentage of new, amateur authors/writhers, the quality of published works is not always good. But users, are privileged to be able to help these younger people develop the art.

Wattpad is not for everyone but does have potential for those willing to make the commitment.
