The Self-Publisher’s Ultimate Resource Guide | Review

Most of you who follow my blog on a regular (or even semi-regular) basis know that I am planning to publish my first novel, Maladaptation, sometime this year. So it should be no surprise that I have been doing research on the self-publishing process and all its facets. I don’t want to stumble into the self-pub trap of looking like an amateur wanker; enter Research and Development.

I was doing research on the subjectwhen I stumbled across the offer to read and review The Self Publisher’s Ultima...

Untested Technology | Interview with Angela Cavanaugh, Author of Otherworlders

Earlier this month I had the pleasure of reading and reviewing a phenomenal sci-fi novel called Otherworlders by Angela Cavanaugh. The synopsis says it all:

“When a virus threatens humanity with extinction, the desperate and dwindling number of uninfected seek refuge in a parallel universe. The technology is untested. The other universe is unprepared and one thing is made violently clear: they are not wanted.

Angela Cavanaugh

A few days ago, I caught up with her and backed her into my interview corner.

Who do y...

Egg Timer | Flash for Five Sentence Fiction

The following story was inspired by two places: Ben Y. Faroe’s post about Writing in Bursts, and Lillie McFerrin’s Five Sentence Fiction call to action for the week. This is the beginning of a story I want to lengthen into a novella- or novel-length book, so if you like it, keep an eye out on my blog. I’ll link to this post if I write more (and can think of a title for the larger work.)

This portion is called “Egg Timer.”

Atlanta Burns by Chuck Wendig | A Book Review

If you’re looking for a book to make your stomach churn, your senses sizzle, and your heart pinball in your chest,Atlanta Burnsby Chuck Wendig is it. This five-star story will make you feel things you didn’t know were in your heart’s storehouse.

“They don’t all recognize her. Not yet. But Virgil does. He’s got a wary look like he’s watching a rattlesnake at a distance.”

Atlanta Burns by Chuck Wendig

Atlanta Burns is not a typical girl. When the story begins, she’s broken, a cast-off just released from a mental hospital. Tha...

Solutions, Not Problems | 5 Steps for Writers to Get Back on Track in the New Year

Late last year, Iwas so frazzled thatIstarted having what I later came to recognize as panic attacks: my face flushed hot, my blood pumped hard, and vertigo took my legs out from under me.

Don’t bring me problems; bring me solutions. – Delilah S. Dawson*

I sat down to figure out what Icould do tolead me to success, and came up with this list.Since I started employing these strategies, things have been falling into place. This year will be my best yet —and it could be yours, too. This list can b...

The Postman Bringeth

In the middle of a beta reading project I’ve been working on, a knock brought me out of my tunnel-visioned focus. It was a postal delivery: a small, thin box that I recognized almost immediately. The postman had brought me a book!

This was no ordinary book. I had an idea of what it was before I opened it, so I was pleasantly not surprised when I ripped open the package and found this.

Review 1 | 2015 TBR Pile Challenge | Diary of a Wimpy Kid

When I couldn’t get through #1 on my Roof Beam Reader 2015 TBR Pile Challenge list, I selected Diary of a Wimpy Kid #1 by Jeff Kinney as my first alternate read. I put this on my list because I had considered letting my eight-year-old daughter read it, but I wasn’t sure if I would be comfortable with the content, as it is listed as 5th grade level.

What did I think about the book? It was cute. And it was just fine for an eight-year-old to read. I prefer for my daughter to read books with less...

Party Fowl | Inspiration Monday Prompt

Yesterday’s post on Be Kind Rewrite for Inspiration Monday was one that instantly inspired me to write about something close to my heart. I wrote about my autistic son, or at least a fictional facsimile, and the kind of struggles the parents of these special kids go through on a daily basis.

Party Fowl

Otherworlders by Angela Cavanaugh | A Book Review

Back in December, an author I follow posted an excerpt of her upcoming novel, Otherworlders,to her blog. She was asking for ARC readers in exchange for an honest review, and I jumped on the chance to read the rest of the already intriguing story.

I was not disappointed.

Otherworlders by Angela Cavanaugh

With their world being steadily decimated by a strange, mutating virus, humanity finds hope in an unlikely hero who promises a machine that can send them to a parallel universe.

The only problem is that this duplicate universe is...
