How Many Twitter Followers?
How many Twitter followers do you have? Does it really matter?
We can all get validation of what we do from our friends and family, but it is nice when a peer says nice things about you. Or follows you on social media. I even commented on this in at least one previous post (see Liking Other Writers). But there is a danger in getting too caught up in who follows who or how many followers you have.
I have been writing for a long time. I have published my blog since 2007. And I was writing stu...

This Is the Other Story
I am finally getting around to telling another story. But it is not one of those other stories that I have so often said was another story.
I did a word search on my blog posts and found that I have used the phrase, “But that is another story,” over thirty times. That might not seem like a lot in over five hundred posts, except for the fact that I have only told the other story one time. (see Writer’s Diarrhea) That is not very good odds of getting another story. So I thought I ought to tel...

Solving an Unexpected Puzzle [2]
Coaches do all sorts of things during a Track and Field (T&F) meet. But I never expected to solve such a puzzle at one meet.
I have already written about how a T&F meet is often chaos (see A Living Breathing Organism). It looks like a three ring circus with all the beauty and majesty of athletes performing their athletic events along with a bunch of chickens running around with their heads cut off. Technically, there really are three rings. There is the big tra...

If It Ain’t Broke…
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That’s what I always say. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
I am not sure why, but we seem to need to tinker. Especially, with stuff that works just fine. But then after all that tinkering, things do not always seem to work like they used to. Which is, of course, where the phrase, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” comes from.
I like the phrase, even if English teachers and grammarians and all those sorts of people will tell you there are myriads of things wr...

Dealing with Grief
National Suicide Prevention Lifeline
This work is in the public domain.
We all deal with grief in different ways. Some cry, some scream, some pray to God. Some grieve publicly. Some grieve privately. The point is that we all grieve in different ways. One of my ways just happens to be writing.
If you have been reading my blog for any length of time, you have seen different tributes to different people I have known who have passed from this life. This one is a little different. For while I gri...

Too Much on My Plate
Sometimes we pile too much on our plates.
Sometimes I pile too much on my plate. (Okay, if you have ever seen me at a potluck, I usually pile too much on my plate. There is usually just so much that I want to try. But that is a completely different story.) I get busy at work and at home doing so much stuff. I have lists of things to do. Writing projects to finish, writing projects to start, blog posts to polish, stuff for work so the students do not revolt, stuff at home so the house is not...

He Is Risen!
Resurrection of Christ
by Noël Coypel
This work is in the public domain.
If you are of a mind to go to a Christian church on Easter Sunday, you will most likely hear the words, “He is risen!” to which you will probably respond, “He is risen, indeed!” And you will be right.
The older I get, the more I realize that my own faith is firmly rooted in fact. Sure, there are experiences and feelings that go along with a relationship with God, but those experiences and feelings mean very little with...

Spring Break
Spring break is a great time for those in education to relax, refresh, and recharge. Even if they still go to school every day.
Not everybody goes on fantastic vacations to sit on the beach and soak up the sun during spring break. There are certainly those who do, but there are also those of us who stick around. Certainly to relax and recharge, but also to keep up the skills and fitness of our athletes who are coming into midseason form. It is a fun time to work with those athletes who did...

Wogglewonkle
If you are ever stuck for a word to use, especially if something is messed up, try wogglewonkle.
One of our staff members (who shall remain nameless) was commenting that the tables in our staff room were wogglewonkle. The wheels on the tables were not locked so they were cadywompus (which is of course, a real word, or close). They were out of kilter. At any rate, the tables were not aligned like they were supposed to be. Since we also have chairs with wheels, when somebody moved a bit, the...
