Lord of the Rings, where I'd do lots of orc fighting, or Star Wars, where I'd be a Grey Jedi, or Harry Potter world because it'd be great to be in such a magical crazy place you could do magic yourself. I wouldn't be a very lawful magic user though - who cares if Muggles find out! I'd probably end up being hunted by the Ministry.
If we're including comics then the DC Universe! But it only if I could get superpowers, otherwise I'd just be another Gotham victim...(less)
Set Sytes I don't. I succumb. A better question would be, 'how do you ever make yourself write?'

More books by Set Sytes…

Just wrote this off the cuff. Similarities with Constantine, I guess. Although in truth it just came from my dislike of magic (and general high-fantasy) in most books, and my attempt to reclaim it. Actually to begin with it just came from a desire to write about weird and crazy monsters.

It’s set in the same world as my story The School of Necromancy. Could become something more! Who knows…

How Not to Kill Yourself by Set Sytes
"I love a book with a candid, dark tone. Set Sytes did not disappoint. This book was a bit heavy-handed at times, but that was part of the dark tone. Starting out trying to shake up his readers to get them to follow along is a great strategy, but o..." Read more of this review »

Flashman in the Great Game by George MacDonald Fraser
“I've been a Danish prince, a Texas slave-dealer, an Arab sheik, a Cheyenne Dog Soldier, and a Yankee navy lieutenant in my time, among other things, and none of 'em was as hard to sustain as my lifetime's impersonation of a British officer and gentleman.”

More of Set's books…
“The only things that could be considered wrong with you could also be considered the fault of the world around you. There is little-to-nothing intrinsically wrong with you.”
Set Sytes, How Not to Kill Yourself: A Survival Guide for Imaginative Pessimists

“Scientists talk about dark matter, the invisible, mysterious substance that occupies the space between stars. Dark matter makes up 99.99 percent of the universe, and they don't know what it is. Well I do. It's apathy. That's the truth of it; pile together everything we know and care about in the universe and it will still be nothing more than a tiny speck in the middle of a vast black ocean of Who Gives a Fuck.”
David Wong, John Dies at the End

“Now, look you here, Sekundar," says I, but he came up straight like a little bantam and cut me off.
"Sir Alexander. if you please," says he icily, as though I’d never seen him with his breeches down, chasing after some big Afghan bint.”
George MacDonald Fraser, Flashman

“Courage - and shuffle the cards.”
George MacDonald Fraser

“This myth called bravery, which is half-panic, half-lunacy (in my case, all panic), pays for all; in England you can’t be a hero and bad. There’s practically a law against it.”
George MacDonald Fraser, Flashman

“I've been a Danish prince, a Texas slave-dealer, an Arab sheik, a Cheyenne Dog Soldier, and a Yankee navy lieutenant in my time, among other things, and none of 'em was as hard to sustain as my lifetime's impersonation of a British officer and gentleman.”
