I believe fantasy elements in a work distance readers just enough from the story so that they can form objective opinions about the characters and, yet, internalize what that means about themselves and the world around them without feeling overwhelmed or attacked. Although my characters may travel to or live in outside worlds with complex rules and themes, I think readers can learn more about themselves and their own relationships by how they react to the story and its characters.

As a reader, I enjoy unwrapping additional meanings and literary themes in stories (whether they're there or not). I try to use literary tools, even in my YA books, to give readers more possibilities for interpretation and points for discussion. Travel Glasses, for example, uses metafiction.(less)

Thank you, international readers!

I wanted to share a couple highlights from Darker Stars’ discount promo kickoff. Last night, the book hit #3 in young adult time travel bestsellers in Australia and #6 in the UK.

I know this is a rough time for everyone right now. Just the thought of readers choosing to spend time with my books over watching a movie or playing a game really means a lot to me. I hope Silvie and her friends bring som

What a charming YA fantasy read! I enjoyed all of it—the Romani, Fae, Sparks, Kynafyl, and that twist with Hansi.

Carder's descriptions are rich, and her colorful, tangible storytelling held my interest. I could see fans of Missy Sheldrake liking th

Lantern by Chess Desalls
"Cute books, I loved all three stories! Loved how they all connected in some way. I really enjoyed that the lantern is what connects the stories."
Glistens by Chess Desalls
"What an enjoyable short listen this book was. A great young adult even early teen book. A clean story about fairies 🧚‍♂️ better known as Glistens in this case.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes this genre."
