“Fantasy is hardly an escape from reality. It’s a way of understanding it.” ~ Lloyd Alexander, The Black Cauldron)

I believe fantasy elements in a work distance readers just enough from the story so that they can form objective opinions about the characters and, yet, internalize what that means about themselves and the world around them without feeling overwhelmed or attacked. Although my characters may travel to or live in outside worlds with complex rules and themes, I think readers can learn more about themselves and their own relationships by how they react to the story and its characters.

As a reader, I enjoy unwrapping additional meanings and literary themes in stories (whether they're there or not). I try to use literary tools, even in my YA books, to give readers more possibilities for interpretation and points for discussion. Travel Glasses, for example, uses metafiction.(less)
