Sophal Ear

OnWednesday,April 17thof this yearI wrote aboutMae Carol Jemison who I consider one of myHeroes.I wrote it with a lot of help fromWikipedia.Once again I am going to tell you about a person that I recognize as aHero namedSophal Ear.He is a professor atOccidental Collegeand a refugee fromCambodiaduring the time theKhmer Rougetook control of the country.Ear's father, Ear Muy Cuong, was a pharmacist in Phnom Penh.[3][4] In 1975 the family was evacuated from Phnom Penh to the Pursat province, where they lived in a labor camp and worked the fields. It was there that Ear's father died of dysentery and malnutrition after a brief stay at a mite-infested Khmer Rouge 'hospital. In 1976, when Ear's mother, Cam Youk Lim, heard that Vietnamese citizens in Cambodia were being allowed to return to Vietnam, she pretended to be Vietnamese and was able to escape Pol Pot's Cambodia with Ear and his four older siblings when Ear was ten years old. They went first to Hong Ngu, Vietnam; Ear's mother took the family to France and then to the U.S. His mother later worked as a seamstress at Elegance Embroidery in Oakland, California. He wrote and narrated the 2011 documentary film “The End/Beginning: Cambodia,” which tells the story of his escape from Cambodia. Electric Scooter Death Machines

Traveling around the country this past summer I noticed that almost every large city I ventured into have these"Electric Scooters"lying around.They are on sidewalksand on the city streets.First,a couple of facts.These facts are solely based of what I know of theCalifonia Law,since that is where I live.The number one thing people should know about driving theseScootersin theGolden Stateis,you have to have aCalifornia Driver's Licenseto be driving one.The second thing is,under the law,you must be wearing a helmet.Which no one does.Third,you are supposed to be driving them on the street,not on the sidewalks.Of course,we have all seen people riding these things without helmetsand on the sidewalks.The basic problem with these violations are,The Police Are Not Enforcing The Law!Since this is a realative new industry,there are not a lot of statistics yet on how many deaths per year there arebut there are a growing number of accidents according to theBusiness Insider.By Isobel Asher Hamilton Feb. 6, 2019

I'm Back

I'm back!I took a two month vacation this summerand I am finally back home.I leftSouthern CaliforniaonJune 9th,and arrived back onAugust 11th.I first drove toNew Mexico.Saw some sights then left forTexas.Visiting my secondand third oldest daughters.Left forLouisianato visit my oldest daughterand her family.Went back toTexasto put my third oldest daughter onto a flight toCaliforniaand helped my second oldest daughter move toVirginia.Stopping once again inLouisianafor four days before going the rest of the way toVirginia.Stayed there for a week before heading toWisconsin.There I visited myDad.I took him to upperWisconsinto visit mySisterandBrother-in-law,staying there for ten days before taking my father back to his homeand visiting myBrotherand his family.Until finally leaving onAugust 9thto travel back to beautifulSouthern California.I don't have what they callJet Lagbut I don't ever want to drive anywhere for a really long time!

"How Do We Communicate?"

   "Your my science advisor. How do we communicate with these creatures?"
   "Mister President." Retorts Karen Krahn. "It's not like we have ever encountered a spacecraft from another world before. This is a first for all of humanity."
   "Look at these pictures." the President replies, not hearing what she has to say. "They don't even have any eyes! How do they see?"
   "Mister President. I believe you should stop looking at these aliens as some kind of monsters." says a frustrated Karen. "Obviously they are truly more advanced than we are, traveling across the galaxy to reach us."
    The Science Advisor pauses here to contemplate the President's last statement, then says with as much conviction as possible, "Maybe they have some kind of combine telepathy and telekinesis where they can mentally see who they are communicating with while moving, shaping, and building objects with their minds?"
   "Then explain all that clicking sound they make when they are walking around outside of their craft?" asks the President. "And that other gurgling noise they make when they seem to be facing each other?"
   Karen get close to shouting, "I have no idea!"
   An assistant to Science Advisor Karen Krahn, hiding in a corner, tries to interrupt timidly, "I believe I have the answer to the clicking...."
   "Who the hell are you and why are you talking?" demands an arrogant President.
   Staring angrily at the President, Karen says vehemently, "She is with me Mister President and why don't you shut up for once and let someone else talk."
   A pouting President concedes to his advisor with a little gurgling noise of his own but doesn't say another word.
   Karen then looks to her assistant, saying, "Go ahead."
   "Well, my cousin is blind and she doesn't get around with a seeing eye dog. She gets around by making stomping sounds with her feet, tapping her cane, snapping her fingers, and making clicking noises with her mouth. It's called echolocation and blind people have been doing it for ages."
   The President looks confused at this point and in these situations he always keeps quiet to let his advisors speak first so he doesn't look the fool.
   Karen thinks about what her assistant said for a second then says jubilantly, "Your a genius Qaifa. I believe you are spot on. This takes away half the problem for our linguists to figure out their speech patterns."
   The Science Advisor looks to the President saying, "Now all we have to do is find something both species have in common. Like physics!"
   
   In the coming months, the linguists did find a common starting point with the aliens, with the President smartly giving Qaifa the credit for discovering the first clue to understanding the aliens.
