Questions You Need To Ask Yourself So You Know The Answer

 *****
Mister Answer Man,why do the oldWibbily Wobbly Timey Wimey European Buildingshave statues ofMythical Looking Creatureshanging on them? Having a series of grotesque statues and faces on the outside of your building might not seem like an obvious thing to do, but the frequency of them — from the Hunky Punks and rather obscene Sheela na gigs of Ireland and the UK to true Gargoyles, like the one above from Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris — proves otherwise. To get technical, it's a form of apotropaic magic; something intended to scare away evil. And true gargoyles serve another, much more practical purpose as well — their mouths are spouts that channel rainwater off the roofs of churches!Story From 13 Superstitions and their Origins on MSN Lifestyle.com
Why does it smell like wood burning onAlaska Airlinesflights? To tell you the truth,it doesn't smell like burning wood-chips on anyAlaska Airline Flight,it was just the recent headlines on someNews Feedthat wanted you to believe that the airline was using wood to fly it jets.Like the one onNewsmax.com.Flight Powered by Wood Chips a First for Alaska Airlines.
"An Alaska Airlines flight powered by wood chips made a historic trip across country Monday as the first using renewable, alternative jet fuel produced with the help of the Washington State University-led Northwest Advanced Renewables Alliance. The demonstration flight – from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C. – used forest residuals, including the limbs and branches that remain after the harvesting of managed forests, according to a statement from Alaska Airlines and the university. The fuel was a 20 percent blend of the sustainable bio-fuel, which officials said was chemically indistinguishable from regular jet A fuel, the statement noted. This latest milestone in Alaska's efforts to promote sustainable bio-fuels is especially exciting since it is uniquely sourced from the forest residuals in the Pacific Northwest, Joe Sprague, Alaska Airlines' senior vice president of communications and external relations, said in the statement. NARA's accomplishments and the investment of the U.S. Department of Agriculture provide another key in helping Alaska Airlines and the aviation industry reduce its carbon footprint and dependency on fossil fuels, he continued."

Will You Be Dumbing Down This Weekend?

The
Holidays
seem to be busier this year.
Probably because of the short shopping season this time.
And who got to decide that
Thanksgiving

November
this year?
I'm working on another short story which I'll

Before you start your full day of watchingEquestrian Square Dancing,Soccer Balling,Hoop Dreaming,Cricket Batting,Rugby Punching,Volleyball Chopping,Skateboard Falling,Martial Arts Bowing,Bicycle Peddlers, andCollege Football Hecklers, maybe we have time to learn somethingScientifically. Is that a word?Well,Spell Checkdidn't correct it,so I guess it is.So here are some of the stories I likeScientifically!
New Zealand Earthquake Lifts a Bizarre Sea Wall up to Land.By Sara Chodosh for Popular Science.com "The mass of rocks and seaweed comes courtesy of a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that thrust parts of the sea floor up and out of the water on Monday. It triggered tsunamis and landslides, stranded thousands, and killed at least two. But it’s the bizarre photos of the newly emerged seabed that are making the disaster go viral. Some of the landscapes look completely alien, even though the cause is entirely terrestrial. This is the wonder of plate tectonics. The enormous slabs of Earth’s crust that our continents and oceans sit atop are not stationary. They move around, mostly at rates so slow that we can’t tell there’s movement at all (except by using scientific instruments). Mostly the plates exert a constant, gradual force in one direction or another."
Stephen Hawking opens British Artificial Intelligence Hub.on PHYS.org "Professor Stephen Hawking on Wednesday opened a new artificial intelligence research center at Britain's Cambridge University. The Leverhulme Center for the Future of Intelligence (CFI) will delve into AI applications ranging from increasingly smart smartphones to robot surgeons and Terminator style military droids. Funded by a £10 million (11.2 million-euro, $12.3-million) grant from the Leverhulme Trust, the center's express aim is to ensure AI is used to benefit humanity. Opening the new center, Hawking said it was not possible to predict what might be achieved with AI. Perhaps with the tools of this new technological revolution, we will be able to undo some of the damage done to the natural world by the last one—industrialization. And surely we will aim to finally eradicate disease and poverty. Every aspect of our lives will be transformed. In short, success in creating AI could the biggest event in the history of our civilization, Hawking said."

Long-Glanded Blue Coral Snake has unique venom. on PHYS.org  "One of the world's most beautiful and venomous snakes has a venom unlike that of any other snake, research involving University of Queensland scientists has revealed. The School of Biological Science's Associate Professor Bryan Fry said venom from South-East Asia's long-glanded blue coral snake had been found to send a massive shock to the system, triggering full body spasms by causing all nerves to fire at once. This style of venomous predation is identical to that of a cone snail, and not like any other snake in the world, he said. Ironically, the discovery could eventually lead to improved pain treatment for humans. These snakes are killer's killers, Professor Fry said. They specialize in preying on other venomous snakes, including young king cobras, so they play a hunt the most dangerous game. With its combination of electric blue stripes and neon red head and tail, the blue coral snake is arguably one of the world's most striking species of snake. It also has the biggest venom glands in the world, extending over a quarter the length of its body."

Faraway Star is Roundest Natural Object Ever Seen.
by Mike Wall for Space.com on MSN News.com
"A star 5,000 light-years from Earth is the closest thing to a perfect sphere that has ever been observed in nature, a new study reports. Stars, planets and other round celestial bodies bulge slightly at their equators due to centrifugal force. Generally speaking, the faster these objects spin, the greater the force, and the larger the bulge. For example, the sun rotates once every 27 days, and an imaginary line drawn through its center at the equator is about 12 miles (20 kilometers) longer than a similar line drawn from pole to pole. The equatorial diameter of Earth, which completes a rotation every 24 hours, is 26 miles (42 km) longer than the polar diameter, even though Earth is much smaller than the sun. [Solar Quiz: How Well Do You Know the Sun?] But the distant star, known as Kepler 11145123, has Earth, the sun and every other object that's ever been measured beat in terms of roundness, study team members said."

Believing Knowledge Is Power.
*****
I was going to start out with another joke today, but how funny is it when somebody says,"2 Moons may be hiding in the rings of Your-anus!"But since it isScience Dayhere on myBlog, let us keep it professional.
Report: 2 Moons may be hiding in the rings of Uranus!by Mary Bowerman for USA Today on MSN News.com"Two small dark moons might be hiding in the rings of Uranus, according to a new report. Researchers from the University of Idaho in Moscow reexamined data collected during the Voyager 2 flyby of Uranus in 1986 and discovered what appeared to evidence of two small moons, according to the paper, which has been accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal. Uranus, which has dark, narrow rings, is known to have 27 moons, many of which were discovered from data collected when the Voyager 2 passed by in 1986. According to the new report, researchers Rob Chancia and Matthew Hedman say they discovered wavy patterns in two of Uranus’ rings, which could indicate the gravitational pull from two small moons. These patterns may be wakes from small moonlets orbiting exterior to these rings, the researchers say in the report. The moons are likely dark and very small, Hedman told New Scientist.  Not only are Uranus’s rings dark, so are most of the little satellites that are in that region,  Hedman told New Scientist."

The saying goes"Accidents Will Happen."
Turning pollution into FUEL: Chemists accidentally discover a way to convert carbon dioxide into ethanol.by "Scientists at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory developed an electrochemical process that uses tiny spikes of carbon and copper to turn carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, into ethanol. Dr Adam Rondinone, lead author of the study, said: 'We discovered somewhat by accident that this material worked. We were trying to study the first step of a proposed reaction when we realised that the catalyst was doing the entire reaction on its own. You can use it [ethanol] in the current vehicle fleet, right now, with no modifications, he added. The researchers created a catalyst – a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction - made of carbon, copper and nitrogen. When voltage was applied, the catalyst triggered a complex chemical reaction that essentially reverses the combustion process. With the help of the catalyst, the solution of carbon dioxide dissolved in water turned into ethanol with a yield of 63 per cent. Without the catalyst, this type of reaction normally results in a mix of several different products in small amounts."
Now this is aGoogle MapI would like to page through.
New Human Cell Atlas Is Like Google Maps for the Body!on Seeker"A new international initiative to chart every single cell in the human body will help biologists and doctors understand, diagnose and treat disease. Imagine having the level of detail in Google Maps but for the inner workings of the human body. A new international initiative is creating an atlas that will chart every single cell in the human body, encompassing all of the tissues within Homo sapiens, scientists announced last week at a meeting in London. The revolutionary project, called the Human Cell Atlas, will help biologists and doctors understand, diagnose and treat diseases with the help of high-resolution images of healthy and atypical cells from every structure in the body. In sickness and in health, cells are the fundamental units of life, and only by knowing our cells will we be able to fully comprehend the mechanisms of human disease, Sten Linnarsson, a professor of molecular systems biology at the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, who is participating in the initiative, said in a statement. The initiative was formally announced at an international meeting convened by the Broad Institute of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University, Welcome Trust Sanger Institute, and Welcome Trust on Oct. 13 and 14. At the meeting, researchers decided what to include in the initiative's first phase. The scientists said the project is expected to be as ambitious in scope as the Human Genome Project, which was the first successful undertaking to sequence the human genome — all of the 3 billion letters in human DNA."

Exhausted In Front Of My Grandkid's School

Do you like telling stories? Are you interested in writing? Come on and join me in a collaboration of writing the Fiction story, "The Experiment." Click on thisLinkand let's get started.*****I want to bring up a problem that I believe is very hazardous to our children.I have to pick up one of my grandchildren from school everyday to help out his parents while they are at work.He gets out of school at 3:20pmand I am usually there at 2:45pm to get a good parking spot. The problem I see are the other grandparentsor parents who are at the school to get their kin. They either park their cars or form long lines in front of the school in order to get their childand they leave their motors running.Sometimes for longer than a half hour! Not only are they helping climate changebut don't they see they are poisoning their own kids?See the source imageDangers of Exhaust FumesBy Mark Perry for HealthGuidance.com"There probably isn’t a person on earth who isn’t aware of the fact that carbon monoxide poisoning can kill, and of course the number one source of carbon monoxide is from exhaust fumes. When listing the dangers of exhaust fumes, death from carbon monoxide poisoning falls at the top of the list. However, death from carbon monoxide poisoning is just one of many dangers to be concerned with. Some of the dangers of exhaust fumes are immediate while others happen over a longer period of time and consequently, are not as readily apparent."These people are sitting there in their giantSUVspoisoning themselves, the environment, and all the kids coming out of school!"In fact, some of the dangers of exhaust fumes hide silently in the background so that many people are not even aware of them. Study after study has proven that exhaust fumes are responsible for a number of physical maladies as well as being a danger to the environment."I don't know a person, except for thePresidentwho doesn't believe thatGlobal Warmingis changing theEnvironmentfor the worstand that a lot of theHealth Criseswe face today is caused by theseGreen House Gases!
"Unfortunately, as if carbon monoxide were not bad enough, there are a great number of the other pathogens that contribute to the dangers of exhaust fumes. Some of those toxins include sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, benzene, polycyclic hydrocarbons and formaldehyde. Each of those substances is a pathogen which can have severe consequences both immediately and over the long haul. Medical science has established that many of these substances have harmful effects on bone marrow, the spleen and even our lymph nodes. As a matter of fact, the circulatory system is especially vulnerable to the toxins in exhaust fumes. Studies have shown that many of these toxins have resulted in problems in the bloodstream such as anemia. Taking into consideration that carbon monoxide literally suffocates us it is no wonder that it deprives our bloodstream of oxygen necessary for so many vital functions within the body. Some of these toxins, especially carbon monoxide, literally produce damage on a cellular level which can lead to a number of cancers. Some of the other dangers of exhaust fumes include an exacerbation of heart disease due to hypertension and a degeneration of the cells which line blood vessels. Many of these pollutants found in exhaust fumes of course cause respiratory problems as well including, but not limited to, asthma. There is also evidence to suggest that pollutants in exhaust fumes also cause irreparable damage to the central nervous system."
This is,Saying That You Should Turn Off Your Car While Stationary Because The Life You Save Could Be MineJim Hauenstein,
And,
“If we take all this actions and if it turns out not be true, we have reduced pollution and have better ways to live, the downside is very small. The other way around, and we don’t act, and it turns out to be true, then we have betrayed future generations and we don’t have the right to do that.”
- Tony Blair -
