Getting real angry about fake news
(638 words)
I’ll remember yesterday as the day a man with fake hair who spent the last eight years peddling a fake news story about presidential birth origins spent the day decrying fake news about urinary recreations.
It pains me that at the time when so many people choose to be hyper-partisan about real news coincides with the time when those same people choose to abandon those most

The ups & downs of speedy elevators
(684 words)
Although my aim is to always at least appear to be a self-sufficient Tin Lizzy tenant, I’m thinking of asking Buck if he’ll install a three-story stair lift to ease my ass up the flights to my office.
That would save me 57 steps a trip or about 342 steps a day. That’s all vertical and on some days my knees are starting to bark.
I’m thinking of doing so on the grounds it

An old Banner colleague hails "Last Baby Boomer"
I’m thrilled with all the 5-star amazon reviews “Last Baby Boomer” has earned. I’m posting this one in its entirety because it’s so carefully crafted — not to mention flattering — and because it’s from one of my many old friends from my Nashville Banner days. I was so lucky to have been tutored in writing and life by these vibrant men and women who coincidentally were great, lively

The saga of 'bama fanatic Harvey Updyke

Twitter tonight will be aflame with poisonous taunts, incendiary rhetoric and the kind of bullying hate-speech we scold our grade schoolers for using.
And for a few fleeting hours, the source of the ALL CAPS bile will be someone other than our president elect.
Tonight is the BCS college football national championship game between Alabama and Clemson and Harvey Updyke

Global warming making it cool to be cold

This weekend I’m feeling like the hysterical woman in the 1961 “Midnight Sun” episode of “The Twilight Zone.” The classic stars Lois Nettleton as a distraught New Yorker imprisoned in her apartment as the mercury soars.
Earth is edging closer to the sun and we’re all about to be incinerated.
But the show has a happy ending, albeit “happy” is relative in a Rod Serling way.

Who gets into heaven & will there be cavemen?

Population trend researchers estimate the next person born will be the 108,602,707,792 person to ever live on earth. Give or take a million or two.
The number seems small to me. I think there were at least that many in line in front of me at the post office the week before Christmas.
Those same researchers contend there are roughly 353,000 babies born each day, or more

My annual exercise in ego: Year's best tweets!
A more modest (honest?) writer would have whittled his or her “best of” list down to about maybe a dozen or so tweets. My 8days2Amish list has 379!
I deemed about four of them unworthy. Well, three.
Actually, these serve as a handy archive for me for the day when I get around to compiling “Use All The Crayons! Too!”
Happy New Year!

2017: Looking forward to better days
(671 words)
I’m so fond of my attorney I spent a good bit of 2016 contemplating various crimes just so I could enjoy more confidential time with him.
First, I wanted to kill Wendy, the malignantly vapid real estate agent who botched the sale of my Mom’s South Hills condo.
The story of my involvement with Wendy, the months of work we did to fix the place up to her dictates, and the

A 2016 blog sampler with links to share
Three of my most popular and well-received posts from 2016 were heartfelt eulogies to dead friends.
So if you’re a friend of mine and you happen to expire before me, rest in peace knowing I’ll be happy to boost my readership by opining on your life and death.
The most newsworthy death was that of Arnold Palmer. My story in two days became one of my top 10 all-timers and was widely

December Tweets of the Month
It makes little sense, but I still get a real charge out of coming up with funny tweets or ones that hint at submerged wisdom. Plenty of both in this month’s @8days2Amish, I think.
Upcoming posts: Tomorrow, “Good riddance, 2016!” And Saturday my annual mind-numbing compilation of the year’s best tweets.
Thanks for checking in!
• I’m still wrestling with the idea of having to earn a
