Still Alive and Kicking

I managed to go almost a full month without posting anything here. That’s… not great.

In my defense, I was busy as a full hive of bees rising up to defend their home against a hungry bear trying to rip the delicious, golden honey from their dedicated little selves.(I’m pretty sure I made that analogy because I have food on my mind right now. It’s dinner time…) I was prepping my Dragons by Kris inventory to sell ata Renaissance Faire, which I’d been prepping for for several months. The event f...

“Saga” is the kind of story that I adore.

I’m not even going to bother trying to come up with a wittier post title. I’m just going to go right into gushing about this series. [Spoilers ahead, though I’ll try to keep them minimal.]

After hearing so many good things aboutSaga by Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples, I had to check it out. It’s certainly an adult graphic novel, and made that abundantly clear from the very start with explicit content and generous amounts of swearing. That’s not the kind of thing that turns me off when done...

FINALLY… finished with Dune

It took months for me to get through this book. Which probably means you can already see where I’m going with this.

Did not like. Not impressed.

I can see why it’s an important book. It’s ambitious, it has an incredibly rich world, and it has very clearlyleft a lasting impact on science fiction. I just couldn’t get into it because I disliked all of the characters so much.

There were moments where they werenot that bad, but for the most part, they just felt… flat. I just never connected with a...

January is going by uncomfortably fast…

As I sit here writing this, I can’t believe we’re already 17 days into 2016. I feel like we should be back somewhere around day #10 at most. None of this more-than-halfway-through-the-month nonsense. I suppose I have to accept it, though. The only alternative is to curl up in the fetal position in the corner, and and that’s generally only acceptable on April 14 and some time in mid- to late November or early December.

So with 2016 further underway than I would like it to be, I suppose now’s a...

2015 in Review

It’s that time again. That time of looking back on the year and thinking about how fast it actually went, and allllllllll those things I didn’t get to do for one reason or another.

But there were also those things that I DID get to do, and I hope you remember all the things you accomplished and/or saw as signs of growth, too.

infinity-time1Because a new year isn’t daunting enough, have this creepy clock spiral!

So I saw “The Force Awakens”

[This post is FILLED WITH SPOILERS. You’ve been warned.]

I’d been looking forward to this movie for a long time.Star Wars is what got me into science fiction to begin with, so the news that Episode VII was coming out was kind of a huge deal for me. I had some concerns, but for the most part, I was excited.

Just saw it tonight.

Reaction? Somewhat underwhelmed.

There’s a lot to like about it. It embraces a refreshingly new and diverse cast while bringing back old favorites, and there are some g...

2015 Reading Roundup

I undertook something of a reading challenge this year, though I didn’t attack it as strongly as I could have. This was a category checklist provided by a Habitica (HabitRPG) challenge, and frankly, some of the genres just didn’t interest me. Which defeats the point of the challenge, I know, but my main goal was just to expand my reading horizons a bit and maybe pick up something that I wouldn’t have otherwise. I didn’t want to get frustrated over it and just took it casually. I think next ye...

These are a few of my favorite words…

*Cue Julie Andrews singing on a mountaintop.*

Once you’re done imagining thatand ignoring the fact that it’s the wrong song slapped on top of the wrong scene, come take a look at a few of my favorite words.

As a writer, words are the tools of my trade. I play favorites with my trade tools. I admit that without shame. There are some words that I just love to say, write, and read. I love their sounds, I love their meanings, I love the way they look on a page. My favorites combine some or all of...
