How identical is too identical?
Twin sisters Elizabeth and Meredith Elliott are so identical their own parents can’t even tell them apart. Two halves of a whole.
Elizabeth, the more cautious of the two, reining in her sister’s impetuous side. Meredith, the more daring, urging Elizabeth to step beyond her comfort zone.
Elizabeth and Meredith walked in each other’s shadow; it’s what they did. Filling in for one another, switching places to prank their friends and to cover for one another in a pinch.
But when heartbreak befalls one of them—while the other’s heart and arms are fulfilled—will it drive a wedge between them?
NOTE: This story deals with issues—miscarriage and infertility—that might be difficult for some readers.
BOOK ONE in the FOURSQUARE SERIESFour stories of four couples who also happen to be four sets of twins.
“I’ve always had voices—er, stories in my head. I once said I should write them all down so someone could write them someday. I had no idea at the time that someone was me!”
My characters struggle in some way for their identity. Their stories are their journey to know who God created them to be.
There is also a strong element of friends, family, and faith in all my stories, and the difference it makes to have such a support system.
I am a Christian and write from a Christian world view, but some of my characters are not believers and therefore do not abide by the Bible and the guidelines for life that we take for granted. My books contain some mild swear language in a few places—and demonstrate the difference when the grace of God prevails.

BLOGWORDS – Saturday 29 October 2022 –BOOK LAUNCH EVENT – EXCERPTS
“Bethy?” Aunt Liz called her namesake. It was a month before their first birthday.
Liz mistakenly scooped up the toddling Mere.
“Liz,” Beverly made the switch for her sister. “This is Bethy.”
“Are you sure?”
“I’m sure.” Bev lifted Bethy’s wrist. “We tied a pink ribbon on Beth—where’s the ribbon?” Beverly lifted her small child’s sweater, even peeped in the knitted tights, scanned the room. “There it is.”
On the floor. Next to Barky’s water dish. In the puddle of water that was supposed to be in the dish.
“Todd!” Beverly called down the hall to her husband’s home office. “Todd!”
“How did she get it off?” Todd reached for the shredded ribbon as he came in the den. “Muffin.”
“We’ve got to find some way to tell them apart.”
“Doesn’t one of them have a birthmark?” Liz played peek-a-boo with the twin she was holding.
Bev and Todd exchanged amused glances.
“Butt mark.” Two-year-old Moe announced, tumbling into the room and dragging a yellow ribbon that the kitten, Muffin, was chasing. “Butt mark,” he repeated. “Butt mark. Butt mark.”
“That’s right.” Liz laughed. “A heart. Like a Care Bear. Right on her tiny hiney.”
EXCERPT – BABY DUANE“Mere, you’re a natural!” Sophi marveled. “I haven’t been able to get him to calm down all day.”
Just three months old, Duane was my newest nephew. And my newest heartbreak. Part of me couldn’t stand to be close to the babies. But part of me had to. Had to hold him and cuddle him… and pretend he was mine.
“I don’t think he’s colicky, just gassy.” I patted his back and rubbed in circles. “Did you change formula?”
“No but I think we need to.” Sophi had nursed Jack till his first birthday, but Duane hadn’t thrived on breast milk, and their pediatrician had prescribed formula. “I already left a message with Dr. Shapiro to call me on Monday.”
“You’ll probably have to take him in.” The baby now slept peacefully in my arms. Both torture and bliss. “B says Dr. Shapiro is pretty particular.”
“He sure is!” Sophi reached for her son. “When are you and Jeremy going to have a baby? You’re so good with kids, Mere. I mean, Cora’s a different child.” She nodded at Madi and Cora playing tag with their cousin, Faith, and a girl who looked familiar. “A year ago she would barely speak.”
“Yeah, she’s a pretty special kid.” I watched as Cora climbed the ladder to the treehouse Dad and the guys had built. In a moment of boldness, or perhaps a total lapse of mental capacity, I turned to Sophi and drew a steadying breath. “Me and Jere are trying. Guess it’ll happen when God decides it’s time?” I hope it happens…
“You’re right about that.” Sophi laughed. “Both our boys were a surprise. I mean, we wanted kids but we never really talked about it, and we sure didn’t make plans. We weren’t really trying, ya know?”
I didn’t know but I just nodded.
“I really want a girl next time—next time!” Sophi laughed. “Listen to me. This little guy isn’t even four months yet and I’m talking about next time.” She nudged me. “By then you’ll have one of your own, though, right?”
“Sure.” I mumbled. “I hope so.” I lifted my plastic tumbler and rattled the ice. “Need a refill.”
Leaning on the counter, looking out the window, I watched. And contemplated. And questioned God.
Why, God? Why give me this deep desire only to deny it? Why allow me this longing if You’re just going to make me barren? Is this how Sarah felt? WAIT! Do I have to wait till I’m ninety to have a baby? It doesn’t work that way, not now, not like it did then…

BLOGWORDS – Friday 28 October 2022 – BOOK LAUNCH EVENT – GUEST POST – PAT NICHOLS

Please give a great welcome to Pat Nichols, author and friend. Because family and friends and faith are so important in my stories, I invited Ms. Nichols to share about FFF in her stories, and in her life.
THE IMPORTANCE of FAITH and the REFLECTION of GOD’S LOVE
A reader once asked me if novels come straight from authors’ imaginations. The answer isn’t a simple yes or no. Why? Because imaginations are fueled by real-life experiences and those experiences influence writers’ characters and plotlines. Whether our genres are romance, mystery, women’s fiction, or speculative, Christian authors’ stories are often centered on family and friends. Perhaps because we understand that God places people in our lives who help us navigate the valleys and thrive at the peaks.
Growing up I didn’t fully appreciate how blessed I was to have parents who loved and respected each other and their two daughters. Sometimes I balked at Mom’s insistence that my sister and I experience so many activities together, like taking ballet and baton twirling lessons. Spending Saturday afternoons at the pool or weekends at our grandmother’s house. After all, my sister was three-and-a-half years younger. At times I was annoyed, especially after I turned thirteen and believed I was so grown up.
When I became an adult I realized why Mom wanted my sister and I to spend time together. You see, she was an adopted only child. The entire time she was growing up she longed for a sister. After Mom married my dad and had a family of her own, that longing subsided. In fact, any desires she might have once had to find her birth parents vanished. Perhaps because she accepted the fact that God had provided her with the one family that mattered.
Now, I also realize the wisdom in Mom’s parenting. She understood that my sister and I were different in so many ways, and we still are today. Yet that close bond created during our youth remains. Despite our different views and lifestyles, we respect each other and love spending time together, enjoying what we have in common. By the way, Mom and Dad were married more than sixty years before they passed on to their eternal home. My sister and I have both been married to our spouses for fifty-plus years. A legacy? Perhaps.
When I began reading Robin Mason’s newest novel, I wondered what it would be like to have an identical twin. I remembered the time I met a woman who looked a lot like me, which was a bit like looking in the mirror. As I continued reading One for the Price of Two, I realized that although Bethy and Mere look exactly alike, God had endowed each with their own characteristics. How amazing that even identical twins are unique individuals created in God’s image.
Although far too many people aren’t fortunate to grow up in loving families, God places friends in their lives to fill that gap. Such was the case of one of our daughter’s close high-school friends who lived with our family for several years. In fact, she was the inspiration for my latest book, Jenny’s Grace.
One reason I enjoy reading books written by Christian authors like Robin, is the importance of faith and the reflection of God’s love woven into their stories.
