The Winter Market in the French Quarter is in full swing, but murder isn’t taking a holiday in the latest from the New York Times bestselling author of Parchment and Old Lace...
The holidays are a busy time for scrapbook shop owner Carmela Bertrand—but not so hectic that she doesn’t have time to enjoy browsing the booths at the Winter Market with her best friend Ava. The last thing the ladies expect to see is a thrashing man stabbed by a serving fork, dying in front of them. The victim is loathed restaurant critic Martin Lash, who posted his scathing reviews on the Glutton for Punishment website. And the prime suspect is New Orleans restauranteur Quigg Brevard—who was seen giving the critic a tongue-lashing minutes before someone stuck a fork in him. An old flame of Carmela, Quigg asks for her help, which does not please her current beau, Detective Edgar Babcock, to say the least. Before her relationship is the next victim, Carmela needs to find a murderer who had no reservations about punishing the culinary curmudgeon... INCLUDES SCRAPBOOKING TIPS
Carmela Bertrand is peacefully browsing the New Orleans winter market with her best friend Ava. Their time is interrupted when they come across an argument with Carmela’s former beau Quigg and food reviewer Martin Lash. A short time later Martin Lash falls dead at Carmela’s feet with a chef’s fork in his throat. Suspicion immediately falls on Quigg, Carmela’s current boyfriend Babcock would like nothing more than to put Quigg in Jail. Quigg asks Carmela to do some investigating and clear his name. This causes her relationship with Babcock to get a little shaky. She must find the killer before it ends her relationship.
In an Oyster Shell – This book was hard to get into at first but ended with an interesting mystery that had me engrossed.
The Pearls – I loved the setting of New Orleans. The descriptions were vibrant of shops, people, and food. It felt as if you were right there. I especially liked all the attention paid to food. I learned some new recipes that I would love to try like Egg Sardu.
There was a slight love triangle. Quigg the old boyfriend is trying to win Carmela back. Carmela is trying to keep her relationship with Babcock from falling apart. It added an interesting element to the story.
The mystery was fun. It was imaginative and though I guessed part of the mystery right there was something so unexpected as well. It ended up being a really good story.
The Sand – The book was hard to get into. It was missing a lot of backstories that I assume you get in the other books. So it doesn’t work too well as a stand-alone.

Fairy tales aren't ever what they seem . . .
Tuesday Knight's dream of Broadway stardom has flopped, leaving her unemployed and brokenhearted. Ready to quit kissing frogs and make her own happily-ever-after, she takes a job as a princess in Everland, Georgia's historical amusement park.
Mayor Beau Marino lives an unenchanted existence-all work, no play-which is fine by him. After his marriage ended in disaster, the last thing he wants in his life is more drama. But Everland's new free spirit has a talent for getting under his starched collar.
When the town's beloved but bankrupt park might be shut down, Tuesday and Beau face a choice. Can they join forces, save the day-and each other? Or will their fierce battle of wills destroy any chance of a fairy-tale ending?
Vibrant Tuesday Knight is making her way at Everland’s amusement park. Having not made it on Broadway as is her dream, she is making other plans. Mayor Beau Marino is Tuesday’s opposite stiff and orderly the mayor doesn’t often care for Tuesday’s carefree ways. When an offer is presented to him to replace Everland’s amusement park for a market chain he has to consider it. Tuesday tries to work with the mayor to make sure the amusement park stay where it is. Neither one of them is expecting opposites to attract.
In an Oyster Shell – A sweet romance with a great storyline.
The Pearls – I love small town settings they are my favorite. Small towns usually mean quirky characters and Everland does not disappoint. There are a lot of oddball characters in Everland which makes for a fun read.
The juxtaposition of Tuesday and Beau was playful and interesting. Neither Tuesday or Beau really expect opposites to attract. Yet they do and it is an entertaining experience for the reader. They end up working really well together and the unity of the two is refreshing.
The romance, of course, was the star of the book. Tuesday and Beau made for a fun couple. The romance was paced nicely. I liked how everything ended up. It was a great HEA.
The Sand – It was a good book.

Valerie Moore is an Elemental, a person who commands one of the classical elements of wind, water, fire, or earth. She’s special, though. She controls two—fire and water—though sometimes it seems like they control her.
After the accidental exposure of Elementals to humanity, Valerie finds herself—and all of her kind—struggling to attain equality. Three different groups fight to secure leadership, and with all of their hidden agendas, she doesn’t know which side to choose. The balance between peaceful cohabitation and all-out war is precarious, at best.
When a chance meeting brings Val and earth Elemental Cade Landston back together, everything changes. She realizes what she knew in the beginning—that he’s the one she wants. Her desire to win him over draws her closer to him, and his vengeful mission to hunt down her murderous grandfather brings them both closer to trouble.
From mysterious doppelgangers to reckless rescue missions, scapegoat bombings, and evolving Elemental powers, Valerie strains to keep up.
All she knows is she must stop her grandfather at all costs. To do so, she has to figure out the truth, but how can she do so when almost everyone she knows has been telling lies?
Valerie is an Elemental a person who can control one of the elements. Valerie is unique in that she is able to control fire and water. There was an incident that exposed elementals to the world. They now find themselves fighting for equality among the rest of humanity. There are three groups within the elementals fighting for power on how to proceed. Some of the groups are trying to start a war with other elementals and even the humans. Valerie with the help of friends is trying to find the balance between the groups. Though knowing who her friends really are is hard to know. Valerie must figure out which group she stands with to help bring the peace.
In an Oyster Shell – It was an incredibly creative story that was full of action.
The Pearls – It is a really creative storyline. I like this kind of paranormal. I liked the people that could control the elements. I haven’t read anything like it and I read a lot.
The political aspect of the story was really interesting. There were three groups among the elementals that all stood for something. I couldn’t help but wonder if there was some correlation with the political environment we find ourselves in today. I don’t usually like politics and it was an interesting take on the story but it really works in the end.
I liked that the story was multi-faceted. There was a lot going on. I liked the romance part of it. The world was going to pieces but there was still time for romance. There was a little bit of a love triangle. It was ever so slight but it was there. Valerie’s romantic choices were interesting.
The Sand – It was a good book.

When her mother and father pass away, the little queen must figure out how to be a little queen. And so she begins her adventures, journeying away from her palace and into the world to determine how she should go about going on. The little queen soon encounters numerous folks who teach her a thing or two: the book sniffer, the dream writer, and the architect of silence are just a few. Along the way, the little queen finds friendship, love, and meaning in being a leader in her world. The Little Queen is a magical exploration of self-discovery, vocation, community, and home.
The Little Queen has lost her parents and left to be Queen. She does not want to be Queen so she goes on a series of journies to find someone to take her place. She meets lots of interesting characters and learns more about the world outside of her walls.
In an Oyster Shell – I didn’t understand the purpose of the book and it was inconsistent in the message.
The Pearls – The Little Queen is lyrical and imaginative. It’s short so can easily be read in one sitting.
The Little Queen is an interesting character. She is curious and inquisitive. She meets lots of interesting people who do interesting things.
There was a little bit of romance in the book. The relationship started out as friendship and ended to be something more. It was a nice progression. It had a really sweet ending.
The Sand – The book did not make a lot of sense to me. There were a lot of characters that did a lot of different things but I did not get the significance behind it.
The narrative had talk of bodily functions. It did not fit the almost classical feel of the rest of the text. It was a bit off putting.
This was not my favorite book. It was confusing.

When a chance encounter with a galaxy hopping space warrior drops Selina Langston down a rabbit hole of kidnapping schemes, time altering super powers and an occasional intergalactic battle, she must decide whether to trust her head, her heart or her hormones.
Until now sixteen-year-old Selina hasn’t had any prospects for a boyfriend. She’s been shunned by her peers due to her clumsy social skills and her oh-so-public blunders, not to mention her inclination to think and speak in hashtags and stage cues. But then Marcum, a mysterious foreign exchange student, arrives by way of an interplanetary spaceship. Selina is entranced by his good looks and an awkward manner that rivals her own. Marcum is captivated by Selina’s power to lengthen time, something she didn’t even know she could do. This could be a match made in the heavens … if it weren’t for two factors that will keep them apart. And a galactic journey Selina can’t possibly survive.
Selina Langston does not fit in at school. She is awkward in more ways than one. She is grateful for her best friend Alex who keeps on eye out for her and her brother. She hopes to end her boyfriend-less streak. When two exchange students come to her school her chances of getting a boyfriend go up. Marcum and his travel companion are there to kidnap Selina. Selina has a special ability to bend time that will help them when the galactic war they are in. Its a race against time to get the time bender back to their planet whether she is willing or not.
In an Oyster Shell – A unique story that I found very interesting in the end.
The Pearls – The story was unique. I don’t read a lot of stories about aliens. So I found this book refreshingly different. The creativeness that went into the world building and characters was fun.
The characters were distinctive and well-developed. I liked Selina she was a mature sixteen-year-old. I liked Alex who was her faithful best friend. He struggled with unrequited love, yet stayed faithful all the same.
The plot was interesting and had some fun twists and turns. There were some unexpected turns that made it a more interesting read. The romance was unexpected.
The Sand – The narrative was a little dry at times.

Now, they just have to survive living together for a few weeks…
Niki Hamilton is just looking for one night of rebound. Having been recently dumped by her boyfriend she has a one night stand with the best man of her sister’s wedding. Grant Powers is freshly burned from a divorce, he is not looking for a relationship. When Niki is left homeless unexpectedly Grant is asked to take her in by her brother in law. They are not looking to rekindle their one-night stand but the tension between them is palpable.
In an Oyster Shell – It was an alright romance nothing that was especially wowing.
The Pearls – I like that is a series. I might go back and read the first book. It reads great as a stand-alone. You get to see other characters in the book that would make sense came from the last book. You get a sense of their story with out reading the first one. You can go back if you like.
The characters were lovable and some easy to hate. Niki’s boss was a real jerk and was easy to dislike. It added an interesting element to the story. Niki was a great character who adapted to the obstacles she was faced with. Grant was a loveable hero. Niki and Grant played off eachother really well. I really like how you could see Niki through Grant’s perspective.
The romance was sweet. It started out as a one night stand and ended up being more than that. It was a romance that progressed nicely through out the book.
The Sand – The book didn’t wow me too much. It was a pretty average romance. Nothing in particular stood out about it.

Review Super Hero Syndrome – by Caryn Larrinaga

Genres: Paranormal
Pages: 324
Source: Author
Goodreads
Tess McBray was dying. The Solstice Syndrome had no cure, and she resigned herself to an early grave. But just when she gave up on survival, all her symptoms mysteriously disappeared.
All but one symptom, anyway. Something is wrong with Tess’s hands. They absorb any material they touch, and her skin turns to wood, or steel, or concrete. It doesn’t take this comic-book obsessed 21-year-old long to figure out what’s going on: somehow, she’s developed super powers. And she’s not the only one; across the country, people are coming forward and sharing their gifts with the world. In her own city, where the police are battling a human trafficking operation, a masked vigilante called The Fox is saving lives and stopping criminals.
Tess doesn’t know where she fits into this new, super-powered world. But when people around her start disappearing, she can’t just sit on the sidelines. Teaming up with The Fox to create the world’s first superhero duo might be the only way to rid her city of evil and save the people she loves most.
Tess Mcbray is dying from the mysterious Solstice Syndrome that has no cure. She figures she is dying anyways so she checks herself out of the hospital and goes to the meteor shower. After the shower, Tess’s symptoms disappear. Something weird starts happening when her hands absorb materials and turn into it. Her hands turn into fabric, concrete, steel. She knows very quickly that she has developed a super power. She finds she’s not the only one, people that had the solstice syndrome gained super powers. She teams up with local vigilante the Fox to take down a kidnapping ring.
In an Oyster Shell – A unique superhero story that makes me want to keep on with the series.
The Pearls – I am really digging this new rash of superhero stories that are coming out. I really liked this story because it was original. A person thinks they are dying and is really developing superhero powers is really interesting. That there is more than one person who’s developed a power makes for the potential of a really great series.
I really liked Tess. She was a bit of an odd ball which made her interesting. She was kind of obsessed with superheroes, so turning into one was a perfect fit for her. The Fox was a great vigilante and made for a good contrast to Tess.
The suspense of the kidnappings made it a page turning story. I liked the mystery and loved that it was solved by the new found superheros.
The Sand – It was a really good book and I am looking forward to this series.

Mallory Jones is tired of being the girl who stays home and practices French horn while her identical twin, Blake, is crowned homecoming queen. So when she has the opportunity to pretend to be Blake, she takes it. At Camp Pine Ridge, she will spread her wings and emerge a butterfly. Or at least someone who finally gets kissed by a cute guy. That is, until bad boy Ben Iron Cloud shows up, ready to get revenge on Blake—aka Mallory.
If it weren’t for that infuriating girl, Ben wouldn’t even be at camp. Luckily, he now has six weeks to soak up some rays and get even with his nemesis. But the more time he spends with Blake, the more he realizes she’s nothing like the girl he thought she was—she’s kind and innocent and suddenly way too tempting. And soon enough, revenge is the last thing on his mind. Unfortunately, the girl he’s falling for is keeping a major secret…
Disclaimer: This book contains a super-hot bad boy out for revenge, all sorts of camp hijinks, and a girl who realized she’s been a butterfly all along.
Mallory often wonders what it would be like to be more like her popular sister Blake. She gets the chance to find out when Blake talks her into going to a summer camp for her. What Mallory does not count on is running into Blake’s nemesis Ben Iron Cloud. She’s not expecting the revenge that Ben is ready to Dole out. Blake has been harassing Ben all year and he is ready to get back at her. He has no idea that it is really Mallory. When he gets to see the softer not so mean side of her he’s ready to break all the rules.
In an Oyster Shell – It was a really fun story with a swoon worthy romance. A book you can find yourself getting lost in.
The Pearls – I liked the concept, it was well executed. Twins doing a switch is a fun story. That Mallory had to pay penance for her twins evil doings was amusing. I liked that everything happened in the setting of the camp.
The characters are really what made the story. There were outstanding main characters that you could emphasize with. The supporting characters sprinkled through out the narrative added a nice pizazz to the story. I really liked Fozzie the burly camp director.
I liked the romance. Ben had a hard time with his changing feelings for his enemy. Mallory was just so sweet that she won him over. Things got really interesting when Blake came to claim her rightful place.
The Sand – It was a good book!
