Fifteen years and counting!

Hello, Write Edge readers! I can’t believe I’m writing these words, but The Write Edge has now been around for 15 years and, oh, how the time has truly flown. It’s been such an adventure, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me next.

In honor of this 15th year of the blog, I thought I’d try something different for the rest of 2025 for The Workshop. I’m going back to the first short stories I wrote and rewriting them. Every Monday you’ll see the link for the first version of the story when I posted it and then see the rewrite. Feel free to tell me which you like better.

This week’s story is up, and here’s the excerpt from the revision:

As Adele power-walked through the drab building, she gave a quick nod to the staff who recognized her. For a moment, her conscience reprimanded her. These people had been there for Eric when no one else could, in a way no one else could. Didn’t they deserve a decent hello?

Last week I shared with you what I #amreading in my weekly #bookreviewpreview. On Wednesday find out what I thought of the middle grade horror ghost story It’s Watching by author Lindsay Currie. Check it out on The Write Edge Bookshelf!

It’s the first quarter of the year and time for a brand new Thursday R.E.A.D.s, in which I share my thoughts on a book as a Reviewer, Editor, Author, and Dreamer. Want to know what is our first R.E.A.D.s book of 2025? Come back on Thursday to find out!

And, finally, it’s back to Instagram on Friday with more shenanigans on what I’m up to in writing and non-writing fun. If you’ve missed previous posts, you can check them out now on the app with my handle, @EktaRGarg, or on my Facebook author page.

Have a fantastic week, readers!

Book review now up!

Hello, Write Edge readers! Last week I shared what I #amreading in my #bookreviewpreview. Now I’ve posted the full review for you. Today I’m sharing my thoughts on the quirky, magical realism book Here Beside the Rising Tide by Emily Jane. Here’s the opening to my post:

A woman whose life has spun out of control takes a spontaneous vacation with her kids. When they get stuck because of sea monsters and a missing-persons mystery, the woman realizes she may need to brace herself for losing control on a whole different level. Emily Jane returns with her second novel that loses steam in Here Beside the Rising Tide.

A little bit of this and a little bit of that…

Hello, Write Edge readers! A short post today, but I wanted to let you know I’ve posted my latest pics to Instagram. Find out what I #amreading in this week’s #bookreviewpreview, and check out my #latesttravels. Also, see what other kinds of fun I’m having; go now to the app and find me with my handle, @EktaRGarg, or check it out on my Facebook author page.

I also posted my book review for this week. I shared my thoughts on the new speculative fiction book Death of the Author by accomplished author Nnedi Okorafor. Here’s the opening to my post:

A young woman desperate to find meaning in her life writes a blockbuster book that catapults her to instant stardom. As she navigates the demands of the publishing industry, her disability, and her expectations, she makes choices that have far-reaching consequences for future generations. Author Nnedi Okorafor uses the book-within-a-book technique in her latest novel, an experiment in metafiction that works only to a certain level in Death of the Author.

When thinking of winter…

Hello, Write Edge readers, on this bone-crackingly cold winter’s day! I’m sure many of you in the U.S. know exactly what I’m talking about. No matter what the number on the thermometer is, temps around the country have dipped far below normal. We’re all going to be bundling up this week!

It makes sense, then, that the writing prompt I chose for today’s story has to do with the cold and winter as well. Here’s a little excerpt of the story for this week:

Should she have felt guilty? But for what? For thinking of him as a piece of meat? Why? Isn’t that how he always saw her?

Read the whole flash now on The Write Edge Writing Workshop!

This past Friday I shared on Instagram what I #amreading in my #bookreviewpreview for this Wednesday. In the middle of the week, I’ll let you know what I thought of Death of the Author by Nnedi Okorafor. Where will I rate this futuristic literary sci-fi novel? Find out on The Write Edge Bookshelf in two days!

Then we go back to Instagram on Friday with more peeks into my writing and non-writing hours. Did you catch the big announcement this past week? If not, find me on the platform with my handle, @EktaRGarg, or check out my Facebook author page.

Have a fantastic week, readers, and stay warm!

A little late but…

Hello, Write Edge readers! I know, I know, it’s Thursday, but I did get around to posting my first book review of the year. I just shared my thoughts on The Perfect Home by debut author Daniel Kenitz, which is pitched as Fixer Upper meets Gone Girl. Did the book live up to this description? Here’s the opening to my review for you to decide:

When a husband-and-wife team of reality stars find themselves at odds with one another over their newborn twins, the wife makes a run for it. The husband turns to the public to appeal for help, only to make the narrative sound much more sinister than it actually is and the wife is left struggling against her public persona. Debut author Daniel takes home improvement shows and throws a thriller twist into the benign TV format with some success in his new book The Perfect Home.

Now go read the whole review on The Write Edge Bookshelf to find out what it’s about and what I thought.

Have a great day, readers!

Happy new year, Write Edge readers!

Happy new year, Write Edge readers! I’m back from my travels — we went to India for a family wedding! — and also back at my desk. While I was on vacation, I spent a lot of time thinking about writing and my future. And I’m so glad I’m here to share with you plans for this year! They include a new book release (!!), more podcast episodes, new books to explore in R.E.A.D.s, and more.

First, though, is today’s short work. I thought about writing a piece of fiction, but the prompt that came my way today encouraged me to offer some creative nonfiction instead. Check out what I wrote on The Write Edge Writing Workshop now!

In the middle of the week, I’ll give you my first book review of 2025: The Perfect Home by Daniel Kenitz. Think “HGTV with hosts that cross a big line,” and you’ll have a sense of what this thriller is about. If you want to know what I thought of it, you’ll have to come back to The Write Edge Bookshelf on Wednesday.

Finally, on Friday, we go back to Instagram and all sorts of fun bits from my writing life and non-writing hours. Check out previous posts with my handle, @EktaRGarg.

I hope you had a wonderful holiday with your loved ones, readers. I’m thrilled to be blogging again. Let’s hope 2025 is a great one for all of us!

Book review now up!

Good evening, Write Edge readers! On a blustery, frigid day like today, it’s hard to imagine the conditions in the book for today’s review. I shared what I #amreading last week in my #bookreviewpreview on Instagram. Tonight I’m sharing my thoughts on Dust by Alison Stine. Here’s the opening to my post on this dystopian climate fiction for YA readers:

A teenager tries to follow her father’s lead to “get back to the land” as he abruptly moves the family across state lines based on a premonition. As the teen battles her own securities because of her disability and the burning need to broaden her world, she must also contend with a climate that provides only the harshest of conditions. Veteran climate fiction author Alison Stine returns with a contemplative look at how teens can fight for themselves in an unforgiving future in her newest book Dust.

Have a good night, readers, and remember to tell a loved one you care about them. Life is too short not to.
