Brandon Graham's Blog, page 265

January 12, 2015

I wish I wasn't enraged by the shallow causes artists pick up, and yet when a true attack on freedom of speech happens, all these liberals and intellectuals and suddenly nobody's got anything to say. In 2014 I lost faith in pretty much every artist I follo

I got this message as I was about to run out of the door for Image expo. I’d just heard about the Charlie Hebdo ish.

I thought what Comics and cola’s Zainab had to say about it was pretty much it.

As a Brandon, I agree.

I don’t know what you expected to hear from anyone in comics. When I read about something like this happening I don’t really feel the urge to write a blog post about it. It’s a fucking tragedy, It’s not about having balls (i have one, thanks for asking) I just don’t think anyone is waiting with bated breath to hear my opinion on it not being ok to murder people if you don’t like what they publish. —

but yeah, fuck human expression.

wellnotwisely:

'Spearheaded by the remarkable Emma Rios and Brandon Graham, Island is a new comics magazine releasing this June: a 72-page, oversized format monthly book that will see an array of international artists and writers from Michael DeForge, Kate Craig, Ludroe, Simon Roy, E.K. Weaver, Farel Dalrymple, Jose Domingo, Johnnie Christmas, Fil Barlow, Gael Bertrand, Lando, Amy Clare, Lin Visel, Onta,  Malachi Ward, Matt Sheean, Will Kirkby, Helen Mair and more (!) contribute concepts for imagined mech designs, fictional fashion ranges, articles that blend prose and comics, and of course, actual comics. Each issue of the magazine will open with a 4-6 page spread of illustrations- the first of which will be by Marian Churchland, the second courtesy of Will Kirkby.'

-Really stoked to be the one to announce Island over at Comics&Cola. You can see and read more at the link.

would you mind posting an example of your colors without the lineart? I'm curious to see what it looks like, and how you color. Are you layering colors? or is it just one layer?

Sureee.

I have a sooper simple way of coloring where I knock the contrast up to 100 so all the blacks are solid (when I ink stuff, not on the penciled stuff). and then bucket fill a lot of it.

So this has (1) inks on 11 by 17 bristol board. This was a 2 page spread with the 2 pages taped together. I have a small scanner so each page take like 3 or 4 scans and then I piece them together. and then multiply the level with the line art on it and color on the levels below it.

(2) I have a layer for the flat colors  (3) and then the shadows. the shadows on this were 2 layers since I did one for the grey shadows and one for the red lit room.

But yeah, I learned photoshop from Tomer Hanuka on my lunch break from a book store job. I think I still color with the basic ideas he showed me.
