Hey Brandon! I will be visiting Portland over the 4th, would you be able to recommend me a cool comic shop to go to?
Certainly, Portland is a nice town for comic shops. My favorite ones there are Floating world and Cosmic monkey .
Floating world is excellent for small press and European stuff– I got all the Inside Moebius books in Spanish there.
Cosmic Monkey has an amazing side room of cheap back issues.
Oh, also check out Powell’s – They have everything but the graphic novel section –and the manga section tend to have some really interesting books.

I’ve finally managed to finish this comic I started two years ago! You can read the whole 9-page story here.
I liked this thing
Why do you always talk shit about comics writers when the critical and commercial success of your entire career is based on writing comics for other people?

If there’s something I’ve said that you want me to clarify I can get into it a lot more than –> “As a writer why do you hate writers?”. Because that’s just not in line with anything I’ve ever said.
Most of my all time favorite comics work tends to be books done by a single creator. but I certainly don’t think that’s the only way to make good comics.

Just saw that you were reading Saturn's Children. Thought I'd chime in that Palimpsest, a novella by Stross, is another great read. Cheers.
I’ll check that one out. I’ve enjoyed all of the Stross I’ve read (or listened to)
So I have about 6 Burne Hogarth books about drawing, and I realized tonight that a) I've never (EVER) used them, and b) I'll probably never use them because they are WAY beyond me and the style I'm trying to do. Do/did you ever use books like these? If so
Maybe they aren’t way beyond you. Maybe it’s just a different thing than what you’re aiming for.
I never personally got much out of Hogarth books. They always felt like “oh you like drawing? Here’s a way to make it less fun!” I get a lot more from just drawing from life and photos and studying other artists whose work clicks with me. Granted I have a pretty cartoon understanding of anatomy.
Even “how to” books that Iv’e gotten things out of –Like some of the comic storytelling ones. I tend to find things to disagree with– I think Eisner’s characters over act for my taste and I don’t like his –A hero should look like a hero– idea of pushing stereotypes. but his books have some interesting ideas in them.
I liked the Perspective for comic book artists book– but felt like it was too padded out. I’d love a book on perspective that just went over the basics-
but yeah, personally I’d get the Hogarth books to someone who really wanted them and go draw in the park.
