Release day for Can’t Help Falling in Love

The first book in the series I’ve been working on for four years(!) has been published. I’ve been thinking about this series, and working on it, for so long, that it almost doesn’t seem real that it’s now alive in the real world outside of the world in my head. Self-publishing is another thing I’ve been thinking about for about eight years, so that’s been an exciting milestone as well.
I hope read...

Libby Teaches: Summer Zoom Classes with WWW
I’m teaching Romance Writing for the Westport Writers’ Workshop for the short summer season–just six Fridays, 1PM-3PM Eastern Time, starting June 26th. This class is held via Zoom, so you can attend from anywhere you get an internet connection. We’ve had so much fun in these sessions hearing from students’ work, and I share my own when we have time. You DO NOT have to be writing a romance to take or benefit from the class. Any genre fiction writer will learn something applicable to their work ea...

The future of RWA
Over the holiday break, the members of the romance writing community were stunned by a series of events within the national organization of Romance Writers of America. I’ve been a member since 2011, and as of January 1, became the president of my local chapter, CTRWA. I’ve gotten a lot out of my RWA membership in terms of education, networking, and inspiration. I’ve given back in the form of board service on two different chapter boards. As a member, I’m disappointed and aghast at the...

What the heck is high concept?
One of the buzz phrases in genre fiction is high concept. You might have heard this phrase in the sentence, “Your story is not high concept enough.” Well, not every story needs to be high concept, but it’s nice to know what it means, anyway. In my two-hour remote video workshop with the Westport Writers’ Workshop, I’ll be breaking down what high concept means, how it can be helpful to define your story, and how to take a story idea and make it more high concept. The class will also delve into...

Conflict in Contemporary Romance
Way back when I was a baby writer and I sat down to try to write my first romance novel, I began to write a historical. I fell in love with romance by reading historical novels full of humor and great dialogue and the angst of two people falling in love who society doesn’t think should be together. It didn’t take me long to realize that even though I loved to read historicals, I wasn’t that interested in writing them, because while I loved to escape to the world of the past, I didn’t have the...

Spring on my mind
After the longest winter I’ve experienced since moving to Connecticut three years ago, we finally got our spring. My garden has exploded with flowers, and yes, weeds. I’ve been thinking a lot about the weeds that dot my lawn. We just moved into this house in July, so we haven’t had quite a full year experiencing the changes that the seasons bring. And after years spent in California, where sometimes it really does feel like you are living in permanent summer, there’s even more to get used to....

Still California Dreamin’
The California Dreamin’ writers conference is over, but I’m still flying high from all the amazing people I met, information I gleaned, and inspiration I gained at the conference. California is breathtaking this time of year–green and blooming because there was actually rain this year. I’ll be dreaming about it and all my wonderful conference friends and takeaways for a long time to come.
Here are my favorite photos from the long weekend.
