Empty Nest
by Marty Wingate
Cozy Mystery
4th in Series
Publisher: Alibi (December 1, 2015)
Publication Date: December 1, 2015
Sold by: Random House LLC
Language: English
ASIN: B00UEL0JQU
Synopsis
If you love Laura Childs, Ellery Adams, or Jenn McKinlay, don’t miss Marty Wingate’s charming Birds of a Feather series! In Empty Nest, Julia Lanchester’s life is interrupted by a murder most foul—and a killer who’s watching her like a hawk.
Manager of a tourist center in a quaint British village, Julia Lanchester finds herself with more ideas than time. Her boss is the Earl Fotheringill himself, but apart from him, she doesn’t mix well with the aristocracy. Unfortunately, toxic mold forces her from her cottage and into one of the earl’s countless spare rooms at the Hall. She tries to get a handle on her overload of work, while she finds herself arguing with dinner guests, chaffing at the sudden interest the earl’s son has in running the estate, and missing her new beau, Michael Sedgwick.
Her life goes from bad to sinister when Julia discovers poisoned sparrowhawks on the expansive estate grounds. And soon after, she finds one of the Hall’s visitors murdered—felled by the same poison. While simultaneously both spooked and angry, she still can’t keep herself from snooping, and dragging Michael along into her investigation. But will she find the culprit before her own wings are clipped?
My thoughts:
What a great read from a great author. Julia is temporarily staying in Hoggin Hall, the main house owned by her boss Lord Linus Fotheringill while Pipit Cottage, her small home is being renovated due to mold damage. She is trying to keep a low profile as she is not having any kind of relationship with Linus despite what rumors are going around.
Linus son Cecil, claims that he has come home to learn how to take care of and run the estate, but Julia is suspicious of his motives.
A fast paced, page turner mystery that will keep you on your toes and wanting more.

About The Authors –
Waverly Curtis is the joint pseudonym for mystery writing team Wavery Fitzgerald and Curtis Colbert.
Curt Colbert is the author of the Jake Rossiter and Miss Jenkins mysteries, a series of hardboiled, private detective novels set in 1940’s Seattle. The first book, Rat City, was nominated for a Shamus Award in 2001. A Seattle native, Curt is also a poet and an avid history buff. He is the editor of Seattle Noir, a collection of crime stories published in 2009. He was a judge for the Edgars in 2008 and is a member of the Mystery Writers of America. Curt and his wife, Stephanie, live in a Seattle suburb under the thrall of their cat, Esmeralda.
Waverly Fitzgerald is the author of three historical romances set in Victorian London under the name of Nancy Fitzgerald. Ever since her first novel was published in 1981, she has been teaching writing classes for adults at various venues including the UCLA Writers Program, the University of Washington Extension, and regional conferences. She currently teaches at and works for Richard Hugo House, the literary arts center in Seattle. Waverly also writes non-fiction, and has published a book called Slow Time: Recovering the Natural Rhythms of Life. She lives in an apartment in the heart of Seattle with her daughter, Shaw, and Shaw’s Chihuahua, Pepe.
Waverly and Curt met in a writing class in the late 1980s and have been working together ever since. Curt took Waverly’s novel writing class while he was writing his first novel. Waverly was his writing coach while he wrote his trio of historical mysteries set in Seattle. For about a year, they worked on twin novels in which Waverly’s protagonist, a female P.I. appeared as a sidekick in Curt’s novel about a hard-boiled Vietnam vet and vice versa. When Curt came up with the idea of a mystery featuring a talking Chihuahua named Pepe, Waverly asked if she could help and the collaboration began.
Pepe is an eight-year old Chihuahua, adopted by Waverly’s daughter Shaw, when he was a puppy. He likes stuffed toys, especially if they squeak. He hates the rain, which is unfortunate since he lives in Seattle. Like his namesake character, he hates being dressed up and thinks he is much bigger than he is. Unlike his namesake, he has a sweet disposition and doesn’t talk much, but he does have his own Facebook page.
Curt loves to start chapters; Waverly finishes them. Curt loves to elaborate and Waverly likes to edit. Curt’s humor is broader while Waverly’s humor is more situational. Together they are an unstoppable mystery novel writing team. Visit them on Facebook on at www.thepepenovels.com.

hurt that Zach is smart, charismatic…and gorgeous.

Reaching across the table, Zach took one of Gabriella’s hands in his and just marveled at how soft it was. He always wondered what her skin felt like and now that he knew, he wanted to feel more. “Don’t leave me. Please.”
Her blue eyes filled with tears and she used her free hand to quickly wipe them away before they fell and then studied their hands on the table. “Zach,” she said softly, “we’ve been over this.”
“I know, I know,” he replied just as softly. “I need another chance, Gabriella. I need a chance to make things right.” He looked up, his gaze meeting hers. “I need you.”
Deciding to be bold, he turned her hand over and twined their fingers together and gently squeezed. He was surprised she didn’t pull away and thought maybe—just maybe—they were making progress. “I know I can’t erase the things I’ve said and done, but if you’ll give me one more chance, Gabs, I promise not to screw up. If I do anything to upset you, you can walk away. Hell, you can slap me in the face, kick me in the shin or throw something heavy at me and I’ll take it. I just…I can’t do this without you.”
Her eyes never left their joined hands.
“I don’t want to do this without you,” he said quietly.
“I’m afraid to…believe you.” He barely heard her words, they were uttered so softly.
Everything inside of him clenched with pain. His always confident, ever-efficient assistant was now distrusting and uncertain—because of him. “I don’t know what to say to make you believe me. Tell me. Tell me what I need to do. Anything. Anything you need from me to gain your confidence, and I’ll do it.”
She looked up at him. “It’s not that easy. Every day I walked into the office, I gave you another chance. Every time you berated me or made me feel like I screwed up and I came back, I gave you another chance. From my standpoint, you’ve had two years’ worth of second chances. I think I’ve been more than generous.”
His other hand reached out to cup her hand in both of his. “I know you have and you have no idea how much I appreciated it.” She looked at him with disbelief. “It’s true! I know I never said it but every morning you were there, I was thankful. Every time you walked into my office, I was thankful. Please. I’m begging here, Gabs.”

Author Bio
Raised in a little village in North Wales, a fierce love of books and reading was instilled in Eleanor by her parents from a very early age, and she has vivid memories of reading secretly under the blankets with a torch for hours after lights out, often getting caught! She was blown away by The Borribles Trilogy – Michael De Larrabeiti at nine years old, and it was then that she fell head over heels with idea of imaginary worlds.
A persistent and professional daydreamer, something she still prides herself on being, she spent most of her early childhood inside her own head making up stories or scenarios, climbing trees, building dens or doing anything arts and crafty. Music also played a huge part of her young life. Growing up on The Beatles, U2 and Status Quo, her obsession with Top of the Pops and vinyl twelve inches grew into a love affair with music that has only grown and expanded over time: there is rarely a moment where music is not playing in her life, and in turn, rarely a time when she is not singing, even if it is in her head!
She had always thought she would write a book some day – it has been an ambition for as long as she can remember – and has always been told that she ‘has a way with words’. Over the years, she’s dabbled in the odd piece of prose, helped friends to write letters and résumés and prides herself on her hilarious lyrical genius when composing poems for friends birthdays! Life, however, got in the way and her dream was stored on the back burner as she put herself through university and started a family. It was only when she was nearing the ‘forty’ milestone that she decided it was time she got some of the ramblings and chatterings in her head down on paper.
A creative, guitar-playing mum of one boisterous, but pretty damn cool boy, she classes herself as a Yorkshire gal now after moving to Leeds when she was eleven. Eleanor works full time as a teacher, but grabs every spare minute she can to write; be it on the train, lunchtimes at school or foregoing sleep for an extra hour or two in the evenings. Her hope for the future is for people to fall in love with her characters as much as she does. Not a big ask really!

Guest Author Kwen D. Griffeth, book blitz and review
Hi, everyone, my name is Kwen D. Griffeth and recently I wrote and published a book titled “Kellynch.” Babs was kind enough to do a review of the book and she asked me to write a guest post.
A writer being asked to write, guess how quickly I jumped on that offer?
She also asked me why I wrote the book Kellynch.
I am the father of three daughters and all of them, to some degree, like Jane Austen. Add my wife to the mix and I can only say, “I was attacked from all directions.”
At first, it was the movies, and we watched them more than once. Initially, I made fun of them, with all the primness and manners, but by the third or fourth viewing, I started to not only find them interesting, but enjoyable. I particularly liked Persuasion and Mansfield Park. These two stories soon became my favorites and I took the plunge and read them. I figured it was time I experienced the stories from Jane’s point of view and not some screen writer. Imagine the looks on my co-workers faces when on Mondays, they asked if I had read the latest Tom Clancy and my reply was “No, but have you read Jane Austen?”
As to the book I wrote, “Kellynch”, it started to take form after my third reading of Persuasion. I was familiar enough with the story to start to see it from the viewpoints of the other characters. I found myself feeling sympathy for Elizabeth.
She was a young, beautiful woman, at the height of her flirting years, when her mother died. She was called upon to replace her socially. Suddenly, she is not allowed to play the “dating games” of the time, as she has a house to run. The two movies I have seen about Persuasion do Elizabeth a huge disservice. She is displayed as shallow almost to the point of cruelty, and I don’t think she is either. I think she is lonely.
There’s no doubt she is vain and self-centered but she is also talented, articulate, intelligent and educated. She would not have been able to substitute for her mother all those years, is she was not. Think of her at a ball hosted at the Elliot Estate. Elizabeth would not have been welcome with the other single young ladies as she was busy coordinating the party. No young man would have given her time as she was forced to always be focused on scheduling the evening.
No married man would have risked talking to her for any length of time. Even today, that activity will get strange looks and I think most wives would not have allowed their husbands to be seen talking to a young woman as beautiful as Elizabeth. Lastly, the wives would have shunned her. The only person left for her to confide with would be her father, and while Elliot says she is his favorite daughter, I don’t see him as the supportive and overly caring father.
I wanted to write a story that gave Elizabeth a touch of humanity and credit for her efforts. I feel I did that. I will share that some have criticized Kellynch as I basically left out Lady Russell. I wanted Elizabeth to grow into the supportive role Lady Russell filled in Persuasion. I truly did not mean to insult the lady.
I also let the Baronet have some room to grow. The story takes place three years after the end of Persuasion and it’s not human to not grow in some way. I felt Elliot would be old enough to start to take stock of his life and wonder “what, if anything” had he accomplished. He would not be able to list much and I felt the scene where he stood and watched the naval officers bending over charts and maps and discussing tactics would have demonstrated to him the degree he had been left out and behind. I can’t imagine he would not have been humbled and possibly embarrassed, at least a little.
I enjoyed writing Kellynch. Miss Austen left us with such full and feeling characters and it was fun to take, what she had started, and push them to a new direction. I felt I had to let the characters grow, but to grow is to change and I was always worried that I might change them too much. I am happy with the characters and I think I have remained honest to the creations of Miss Austen.
I feel I can safely say, if you enjoy reading period love stories, Kellynch will not disappoint.
Again, I want to thank Babs, for the review and for allowing me a page on her blog.
Kwen Griffeth, Nov 2015
Follow Kwen
Jane Austen completed “Persuasion” in August 1816. It was to be her last book. She left us with the story of Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth and she left them approaching “happily ever after.” What happens the day following “happily ever after?”
The story of Kellynch picks up three years after the couple married and were able to secure the Kellynch estate from Sir Walter and Cousin William Elliot agreed to waive the entailment.
It would seem all is well with the young couple, but all is not as it seems.
Kellynch is a story of deceit and treachery as well as courage and overcoming the odds. It is a story in which those who were assumed to be friends are not and where support comes from unexpected places. Love again, will, be tested in a story set against the backdrop of historical events.
Throughout the book, I have tried to remain true to the characters as Miss Austen created them. I sought to develop and introduce new characters that would meet with her approval.
My review:
There are several books out there that try to be like Pride & Prejudice. I was surprised when I was contacted by the author to read Kellynch based off Persusaion. I jumped right into the read.
All seems well for Anne and Wentworth until he has to go see Elliot about the estate. Anne has her own problems with feeling unloved at the moment with no child and Wentworth leaving.
Wentworth has to go back to sea to try and save Kellynch as Elliot was not a great cousin as we thought.
While he is gone rumors start around that he has left Anne of course her rather and sister show up to support her. Thankfully Anne knows best and tries to carry on.
Can Wentworth save Kellynch and his marriage?
The author does a good job trying to stay true to JA. The book was fun to read and was read in one sitting.
I was given this book by the author for an honest review.
