A MOMENT TO LOVE
A Whistle Stop Romance #1
Jennifer Faye
Released February 3rd, 2015

The notorious cowboy meets his match…

Cord Lawson instantly distrusted the young woman in a smart suit who’d just arrived in Whistle Stop. She was very pretty and clearly a city girl—but with memories of his failed marriage still darkening his mind, he’s determined to steer clear! But she’s sniffing around his land—land that had been in his family for generations. There was no way he’d let it go—even if the bank was threatening to foreclose, and selling could give Whistle Stop a new lease on life.

Alexis Greer had one mission in mind—close the deal on the Lawson estate; without it, her father’s land development company would go bankrupt. But the word around town is to keep clear of Cord and to stay away from his precious land. What in the world had happened to cause such a handsome cowboy to live such a solitary existence? However, determination was Lexi’s middle name, and she just had to keep on trying to breach Cord’s barriers, appeal somehow to his head and heart—even if it put her in danger of losing both of hers…to him.

Dead in a Dumpster by Leah Norwood- Review & Giveaway

Title:

Dead in a Dumpster: Leah Norwood Mystery #1

Author:
B.L. Blair

When Leah Norwood finds the body of Isabel Meeks in the dumpster behind her store, she can’t believe the police consider her a suspect. Sure, she didn’t liked Isabel, but then again, neither did anyone else. Isabel had a condescending attitude and a bad reputation. As manager of the antique store, Patina, she had made a lot of enemies.

There is Patina’s assistant manager, the handsome and charming Trent. Isabel was blackmailing him. There is Patina’s owner, the aloof and influential Anthony Thorpe.  Isabel was smuggling drugs through his store. And there is the entire drug dealing Cantono family. Isabel had lost a box containing heroin from one of their shipments. That is just to name a few and didn’t even include the stranger who was seen arguing with Isabel just hours before her death.

The police have too many suspects and too many soft alibis. Leah needs to prove to the sexy new chief of police that she had nothing to do with Isabel’s death.

Leah loves a good mystery. Can she find the killer before the police arrest her for murder?

My thoughts:

This is the first book I have read by this author. This is the start to a new mystery series featuring Leah Norwood. She finds the body of Isabel which lands her right in the sights of heart throb and new Chief of Police, Alexander Griggs.  He is a strong tough guy but you can also see he has tenderness.

I like that the romance did not overshadow the main story like some other cozy mysteries try to do.  The author does a great job in the story from the characters to the flow.  You want to keep turing the pages to find out what happens.  I felt like I was right there along with the characters.  The author knows how to write.  I will be looking for more books in this series.

“So you found the victim about seven fifty?” asked the baby-faced young cop.
Why was everyone so young?  The name on his badge read Keith Cisneros.  I have always been a little nervous around police officers.  I’m not sure why.  However, I couldn’t be nervous around Keith.  First, he was just too young.  Second, I didn’t have any nerves left.  I was too wet, too cold, and too miserable.  And third, I knew Keith.  Not well, but well enough to not find him intimidating.
We were standing by the dumpster and trying not to look at Isabel.  I don’t think Keith had ever seen a dead body either because the look on his face made me think he wanted to follow in my footsteps – scream, run into the nearest building, and lose his lunch.  But the kid was made of sterner stuff.  My estimation of him rose as he held his ground and questioned me.
“What were you doing out here?” he asked.  Okay, so my estimation of him fell a little.  I glanced at the trash bags sitting at our feet and tried to keep my voice even as I answered.
“I was taking out the trash.”  I don’t think I succeeded as he looked at the trash and then flushed.  Now I felt bad, like I had kicked a puppy.
“So did you …”
“Cisneros.”  A deep, smoky voice cut through the night.  Both of us jumped and then turned toward the voice.  From the shadows, a figure emerged.  If I had any nerves left, I might have been a little anxious.  The man walking toward us moved like a stalking panther.  Smooth, long strides that ate up the space.
He was breathtaking.  Not gorgeous or handsome but there was a power about him that drew the eye.  He wasn’t exceptionally tall, standing about five eleven, but his shoulders were broad and his hips narrow.  Dark hair cut short in a military style, covered his head.  His face was attractive in a timeless way.  Chiseled and clean-shaven but with just a hint of a five o’clock shadow.  He had a small indentation on the right side of his mouth that was trying very hard to be a dimple.  It was as if he was willing it not to appear with the strength of his personality alone.  He had intense green eyes that swept over me briefly before settling on Keith.
He looked familiar, but I knew we had never met.  I would have remembered him.  He stopped between us and turned to Keith.  “What have we got?”
“Victim identified as Isabel Meeks.  Gunshot wound to the chest, close range.  She was found about seven fifty p.m. by Ms. Norwood.”
Keith pointed to me, and the man turned his eyes to mine.  His gaze swept down my body and back up.  He then dismissed me without a second glance before turning back to the rookie.  “Has the ME been called?”
Now, I know that I am not the most attractive person in the world.  I am what most people would call average.  Average height, average weight, average looks, but being dismissed so completely really pissed me off.  I was cold, wet, tired, and quite frankly, still a little queasy.  And it had been a really bad day.
“Can I leave now?”
Both of them turned toward me.  Keith seemed a little surprised that I was still there.  The other man just seemed irritated that I had interrupted him.
“You found the body?” he asked and then continued when I nodded, “We will need to ask you some questions.”
Keith had been asking me questions.  My nerves were shot and my temper short.  I am not usually such a bitch, but I had enough of standing out in the freezing rain.  I probably shouldn’t have mouthed off to a police officer, but I figured my day couldn’t get any worse.  I summoned up my inner diva, gave him my most haughty look, and asked in a snooty tone.  “And you are?”
He stared at me a minute, his eyes hard and unyielding.  He raised his eyebrows just a notch, pulled out a badge, and held it toward me.  “Chief of Police Alexander Griggs.”
Well, damn, my day just got worse.

Terry Spear JAGUAR PRIDE – Spotlight + Giveaway

image002-1Title: Jaguar Pride

Series: Heart of the Jaguar

Author: Terry Spear

ISBN: 9781402293795

Pubdate: February 3, 2015

An impossible mission…

JAG Special Forces agents Huntley Anderson and Melissa Overton are hot on the trail of poachers when they’re suddenly saddled with two jaguar shifter cubs. They have to locate the parents, pronto—but who’s going to babysit in the meantime?

A lifetime of possibilities…

Huntley is a rough, tough jaguar shifter and an all-business agent, but he’s not going to let two abandoned youngsters come to any harm on his watch. Seeing her super-manly partner try to get the playful cubs under control stirs up some unexpected desires in Melissa, and she begins to feel like Huntley’s not the only one who’s in over his head…

USA Today bestselling author Terry Spear has written over fifty paranormal and medieval Highland historical romances. In 2008 Heart of the Wolf was named a Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year. A retired officer of the U.S. Army Reserves, Terry also creates award-winning teddy bears that have found homes all over the world. She lives in Crawford, Texas.

Excerpt

Once inside the park, Melissa and Huntley trekked for miles, not seeing much of anyone or anything, not with the way the rains were coming down in torrents in the steamy rainforest. They hadn’t found any sign of Jackson. Just a few hikers, hardier than most, who endured the rains and mud to see glimpses of wildlife here and there. When Melissa and Huntley finally set up camp for the night, she felt wet and miserable. And she couldn’t believe how Huntley looked like he could go on for several more hours when she was totally beat.

She should have regretted not sleeping more last night. But making love to him was what she’d needed. Not that she thought anything permanent was likely to come out of the relationship.

Just the same, she’d needed to feel sexy and wanted and loved. Huntley gave that to her and more. So when he’d wanted more, she just couldn’t say no, despite knowing that she needed a good seven hours of sleep to feel normal the next day.

She was thinking of Jackson and how he had slipped away from them the first time. She hoped they’d find him soon. Then gunshots fired off in the distance.

Her heart skipped a couple of beats.

“We don’t have time to take down the tent. Do we go as humans or jaguars?” Huntley quickly asked her.

She loved that about him—how he always included her in the decision making. “If they’re rangers or police, I want to go as humans. Even if they’re poachers, I think we’ll be safer if we look like we are ‘tourists.’ We can always shift when we get there if we need to.”

“Sounds good.”

At least they were armed with tranquilizer guns this time.

There was something different in the way he looked at her today. His light blue eyes held a predatory gleam.

Impossible. The man had no interest in hunting her. It was wishful thinking on her part.

“Why are you here, Sean? I don’t remember you coming into the library before.” She tilted her head as she considered his lack of visits. “Do you have a library card?”

“I wanted to talk to you about your book club,” he said. “I want in.”

She blinked a few times. She couldn’t possibly have heard that correctly. “Excuse me?”

“I want to join your book club.”

He seemed serious. “Why?” The word dragged out of her mouth.

“Why do most people join a book club? To discuss books and read something out of their comfort zone.”

Isabel frowned. “You only read e-mails and business magazines.”

“True.” Sean nodded. “Time to broaden my horizons, don’t you think?”

“No. What are you up to, Sean?” She couldn’t figure out what his angle could be.

“When’s your next meeting?”

She straightened her shoulders. No, no, no. He wasn’t going to invade her book club. She wasn’t going to have him ask provocative questions or slice through her arguments. Okay, so that would be welcome in most book clubs, but she wasn’t going to share her thoughts with him about these books. “It’s by invitation only.”

“Then invite me.”

She shivered at his low and rough voice. “No.”

“Why not?”

“You wouldn’t understand.” Their meetings were her safe place. A time to bounce ideas off her friends and ask questions. After plenty of Sunday dinners with Sean, she knew the book club’s discussions would completely deteriorate into a battle of wills if he was there.

Sean rested his chin against his hand. “Are you worried that I would learn all your secrets? Find out all the tricks and tips from your readings?”

It was a concern. Knowledge was power. These books emboldened her and she was learning how to reach out and take what she wanted. But the bold side of her wasn’t fully formed, and she couldn’t discuss these subjects with him until it was.

“I want to join the book club,” he said firmly.

“No.” Never. Not going to happen.

The Best Advice I Was Given

By Michele Lynn Seigfried

Since I published my first mystery novel, I’ve been offered a ton of advice—both solicited and unsolicited. Some good, some not so good. Weeding through all the suggestions to figure out what really works for a writer is a daunting task. So, I’ve compiled a list of the five best pieces of advice that I’ve been given.

Do not worry about negative reviews.

For writers and non-writers alike, it is so hard for many of us to take criticism. It’s hurtful when we feel others are “attacking” us. It makes us feel disappointed, unworthy, and even embarrassed, depending on what was said. Don’t take it personal. Don’t dwell on it. Don’t give others that much power over you. Realize that everyone has different likes, different tastes, and different ideas of what is good and bad. Give yourself the appropriate credit for the monumental task you’ve accomplished. Even the most successful people are criticized, scrutinized, and given unfavorable reviews. Use it as an opportunity to learn something. Some critiques are helpful—they can point out things we may not have realized before and we can use those points to improve.

Get involved in writers’ groups.

Searching and finding the right writers’ groups for yourself isn’t always easy. Meeting locations are not always convenient. Personalities don’t always mesh. But, if you can indeed find the right group of people that are in the same career as you, you will be presented with countless opportunities to market yourself and improve your craft.

The learning experience from the writing groups that I have joined is priceless. The members are full of knowledge and wisdom. They keep you apprised of upcoming book shows. Their newsletters are full of useful tips. Some groups offer expert guest speakers at their meetings. One has a library of books for borrowing relating to the craft of mystery writing. There are opportunities to attend conferences, enter your books for awards, and speaking opportunities. Networking with others in your field is always beneficial.

Don’t underprice your books.

If you ask a hundred people where you should price your books, you’ll get a hundred different answers. Amazon Kindle has a service in beta called “Kindle Pricing Support,” which suggests a book price based upon historical sales data for similar Kindle books whereby authors can maximize their earnings.

One book show organizer had approached me at a book show, worried that my books were priced too low. Worried that I wasn’t giving myself enough credit. Worried that I was lowering the bar for other writers. While I understood these points of view, there were other factors that I had considered when setting the price. The fact that I was new to the writing world and felt I was using the book show as more of a promotional opportunity for myself rather than a way to make money was top on my list.

After many test runs, I realized that what the organizer was trying to tell me was true. People will pay a higher price for quality. I shouldn’t sell at a price that is less than my own cost to just get my name out there. I feel that I wasn’t giving myself enough credit at the time. I also felt like buyers may not have faith that your book is any good if you are charging less for it. Don’t get me wrong, shoppers are always looking for a deal. But if you start out at rock-bottom prices, that doesn’t leave any room to give someone a deal.

Work hard.

Writing is hard work. The harder you work, the better you will become at your craft. Writing, learning, doing research, asking questions, networking, and marketing all take a considerable amount of time. I will dare to guess that most writers out there are also holding a full-time job in addition to writing. Working hard sometimes means giving up time with your loved ones, missing out on sleep, and writing during what should be a vacation. I find the harder I work, the more I sell.

Do the things you enjoy doing.

Life’s too short to not do the things you love. I always loved being creative and I always loved art. Two things I hadn’t realized I had gotten so far away from. Work, responsibilities, bills, marriage, and a child—I let life get in the way. The good news is that my favorite things are back in my life and I’m happy about that. Write what you love, not what you think you’ll sell. It will make you happier. It will make you feel more satisfied. It will make you feel accomplished. If you don’t enjoy what you are doing, then you shouldn’t be doing it. By the same token – if you do enjoy doing something, then go for it! Stop letting things hold you back.

Romance is in the Air Giveaway Hop

Featuring Young Adult & Clean Adult Romance

February 4th to 14th

What is your most favorite romantic evening?  With 4 kids the hubby and I try to do at least 2 date nights a month.  I don’t care if we go to McDonalds as long as we get some time away.  It helps to have some adult time being around the kids 24/7 and hubby works out of town and only home on the weekends.  We value our date nights.

Thanks to Musa I will be giving away 2 gift cards to pick any book you would like from their website.  Just fill out the rafflecopter form below.
