I don’t know about you, but winter weather advisories, snow days and trudging through snowdrifts to find the SUV are getting to me. About this time of year, I’m ready to set sail on a nice cruise. Or rent a little bungalow on a coast where it’s warm and sunny.

Here’s a little peek at Witt to start you off 
“Hi, Witt.” She drifted forward. When he crowded behind the counter, scooping her off her feet, she squealed.
He kissed her open mouth, tasting mint and pure delicious female.
“You haven’t offered me any candy,” he rumbled, teasing her earlobe with his tongue.
“I know you don’t want candy.” She sucked in a sharp breath.
He straightened and set her back on her worn cowgirl boots. Smiling, he said, “Maybe I’ll surprise you. What would you recommend?”
“Ohhh. Maybe some of these?” She went to the case and pulled out a whole tray of apple pie cupcakes.
“Mmm-mm. Yes, I could do with some of those. What about you? What do you want?”
She looked inside the case. There were nut clusters and coconut macaroons. Beautiful white chocolate confections that looked like the most delicate spider webs dotted with silver sprinkles.
What would she choose?
She plucked an apple pie cupcake from the tray and took a bite.
Damn. That wasn’t Shelby—not the one he wanted to know. He removed the cupcake from her hands and shook his head. “Uh-uh. That’s not your choice.”
She flushed red and swallowed the mouthful.
He snagged her around the middle and reached into the case with his free hand. Before she could blink, he stuck a chocolate drop into her mouth. Surprise widened her eyes, and he couldn’t stop himself.
He kissed her.
“Mmm.” He moaned at the flavors of woman and chocolate.
“Good?” she gasped around the bite.
“Yeah, and the chocolate’s decent too.”
The blue depths of her eyes softened, and his heart rolled with happiness.
“You don’t seem passionate about that candy. How about this?” He shoved another between her lips and she grumbled around the mouthful. Still, her expression didn’t change much.
He swooped in and tasted that bite too, his cock aching for more. He trapped her between him and the glass case. Damn, it felt so right having her pressed against him. With a hand on her lower back, he swayed her closer.
She mewled with pleasure but it had nothing to do with the candy.
He reached blindly into the case and as soon as she swallowed, he filled her mouth once more.
Her eyes popped open and she smiled around the dark chocolate.
“That’s it, right? The one you choose?”
She nodded, groaning around the sweetness. Leaning over her, he allowed her to enjoy the candy she probably didn’t sample often and caught the scents of raspberry filling. He tucked the knowledge away and focused on her lips.
Want surged in him. It would be easy to flip that sign on the door to CLOSED and have a hot, dirty half hour against the wall in the backroom, but he was a Dalton. And Daltons didn’t dally.
“Stop looking at me like that, Witt.” Her voice was a thin whisper of its normal strength.
“Like what, sweetheart?”
“Like I’m the candy and you’re hungry as hell.”

“Not so fast.” He rose and clasped her upper arms. “I find you…” After a brief pause, he pulled her roughly to him so she was wrapped tightly in his arms. “While I do not usually object to a woman in this position,” Dane said quietly, “I must confess something about the dagger between your lips is less than romantic.”
Marlowe reached for the dagger, but he was faster, grasping her hands and pinning them at her side. She lost her balance and settled on top of him, and he pushed her down so that she would fall forward if she tried to swing her legs out from under her.
“What, exactly, are you doing?”
She couldn’t answer, not with the dagger in her mouth, and she shook her head, shaking her arms to indicate she wanted to be freed from his hold.
“What’s the matter? Can’t speak with a knife between your lips? Hazard of your profession, I assume.” He began to rise, sliding her along his body, as he did so. Even beneath the layers of bedclothes, she could feel the strength and power of him. His hands, remarkably strong, held hers at her sides. Nothing she did would free them. He was far too strong. It was times like this she hated being a woman. Gideon would have freed himself easily. He was also tall enough that he wouldn’t have needed to climb onto the bed.
When the swell was sitting, with Marlowe conveniently in his lap, he leaned forward so his face was inches from hers. “Drop the knife.”
She wanted to tell him it was a dagger, a subtle but important distinction, but she couldn’t speak and hold on to her weapon. And she couldn’t think very well with her body pressed against his. Something about their positions made her skin tingle and her belly flutter. She should want to pull away. Instead, she fought the urge to push closer, to rock against him. What the bloody hell was wrong with her?
“Drop the knife or I’ll take it.”
She laughed. Just let him try.
“Very well.”
To her surprise, he leaned closer, his lips moving so near to hers she could smell his breath. Like the rest of him, it smelled clean. She was so intent upon smelling his breath, so intent upon the heat of his body pulsing against hers, she forgot to move her head back, and she jolted in shock when his lips touched hers. What was he doing? Kissing her?
But then his teeth flashed and closed on the dagger’s blade, and she reacted too slowly. He yanked it from her mouth, and she had no choice but to let it go or risk the blade cutting the corners of her sensitive flesh.
“Bastard!” she yelled. He released her hands then, allowing the dagger to drop into one of his. She swung at him, and her fist collided with a satisfying thunk against his cheek. But her satisfaction was short-lived as he recovered easily and flipped her over. Suddenly, she was beneath him on the bed, and all the warmth from the bedclothes and his body were covering her. She bucked immediately, trying to throw him off, but he was solid and heavy, and when his hands grasped her wrists and pinned them to the pillow, she knew she was trapped.

One of the biggest perks of being a romance writer is my all-access pass to Cheyenne Frontier Days, the world’s largest outdoor rodeo. That little piece of paper gives me access to everything, including the cowboy ready area, where the roughstock cowboys get ready for their rides. It also lets me watch the action from the rail—a real thrill for a fan like me. I generally try to be inconspicuous and listen, absorbing the way the contestants talk and taking in all the details of the rodeo life.
But every now and then, I interview someone special, and one of the questions I always ask is, “What has rodeo taught you?”
Here are just a few of the answers I’ve received.
1. From a rodeo announcer: “If you want to find the most successful cowboy in the crowd, look for the quiet one. There’s no need to boast when you’re really the best. Confidence wins, but cockiness kills.”
2. From a bull rider, when I asked if he worried about getting hurt: “Worry’s a lot like a bucking bull. It shakes you up and throws you around, but it doesn’t get you anywhere.”
3. From a saddle bronc rider: “You can’t win if you don’t try, and you won’t learn if you’re not willing to fail. And don’t worry; nobody who’s worth anything would laugh at a beginner who’s trying his best.”
4. From a roper: “When the barrier drops and it’s time to ride, ride hard, ride fearless, and think of nothing but your goal.”
5. From a bronc rider: “If you climb in the saddle, you better be ready to ride, and you’d better be ready to fall. If you haven’t fallen off a horse, then you haven’t been riding long. And if you’re afraid to get hurt or get dirty, rodeo’s not your sport!”

He didn’t ascend the two steps up to the raised floor I was on, so we were now more or less of similar height. It was a little disconcerting he was still taller, even at my advantage.
“Did you just tattletale like a little bitch?”
“He was touching your ass.”
“You–”
“And if you want me to be your bitch, I can do that.” The grin that spread across his handsome face showcased a sexy line of white teeth. He had a very small slit in his lip, as if he suffered from dry lips. Without thought, I leaned forward and sucked his bottom lip into my mouth. He tasted like beer and delicious man. I didn’t answer; I simply sauntered back onto the dance floor. I glanced over my shoulder and offered him a coy smile. Acis had scared the poor young guy away.
I started the slow sway of my hips, keeping my eyes pinned to my avid admirer. His eyes tracked my movements. The sway of my hips, the bend of my knee, the curve of my waist. Slowly, he walked toward me with the prowl of a dangerous animal ready to capture his prey. I expected him to wrap his arm around my body and pull me against him, but instead, he lifted his hand and hooked his finger under my chin and ran his thumb over my bottom lip.

I didn’t speak; I simply stared into his eyes and wrapped my lips around his thumb and sucked it into my mouth, licking the pad before slowly releasing it. His eyes flared and his extremely long lashes battered against his cheeks like butterflies trying to escape. Finally, his thick arm banded around my back and lifted me up against him, my feet dangled near his shins. There was no finesse in the way I crashed against him—as I said, I was clumsy. But the heat of his skin burned against me, igniting a desperate need inside me. I pressed my hands against his chest and curled my fingers into the fabric, anchoring myself to him as he pressed his hips against mine and started a slow sensuous rocking. With each wave of movement, my stomach tightened as his hips and hard-on pressed perfectly against me. I parted my legs slightly, allowing him to slide his thigh between my legs. His hand caressed my waist as it slid down my side, over the small of my back, to cup my arse. He pressed against me, bringing me tightly against his hardness. I closed my eyes and a small moan escaped me as electric pulses throbbed through me.
The scratch of stubble against my cheek and the hot warmth of his breath made me shiver violently.
“I want to feel, touch, and taste your skin, Pix,” he whispered against my ear, the seductive baritone of his voice shattering any protests I may have had. Which I didn’t. I tightened my fist in his shirt, certain I was nipping his flesh.
“I want you to watch as my tongue licks every inch of this perfect body. Starting with your tight nipples.” He took my earlobe into his mouth and nipped with his teeth. I melted against him. The only support for my weakened body was my grip on his shirt and his hands on my arse.
“I—” I said breathlessly as he licked a warm path down my neck to cover my throbbing pulse with his mouth, sucking hard against my heated flesh.
“Either way, babe, I need you naked.”

“This isn’t a lesson. I’m asking you to play for me, James. Get out your old favorites, the friends you turn to when you’re heartsore and soul weary, the consolation pieces that aren’t for everybody else. You play them for yourself.”
She curled up across the room in a pap-san chair and pulled an old quilt around her.
Could he do this?
If Vera had asked James to go to bed with her, he would have known he was competent to bring her pleasure, to satisfy her most intimate wishes and secret, sexual desires. But this? To play? For her?
She wanted music that had called to him, spoken to his soul and become a part of him. Pieces of his heart.
James set his hands on the keyboard, took a slow, deep breath, and began to play. He played from memory, his fingers finding the notes easily in the dim light. He could play this waltz with his eyes closed, and he had, many times. He hadn’t heard it since the night his mother had died, but she’d loved it too, and his hands would never forget how to craft the phrases and melodies.
“Oh, James, the Chopin.” Vera signed her pleasure at his choice, and James’s heart sighed with her. He could do this for her, soothe her with music the way she’d made music to soothe and delight so many others. The waltz shifted from a work he’d set aside years ago – a grieving piece – to a gift from him to Vera.
Only to Vera.
When the last rippling rise of notes died away, Vera remained curled up, eyes closed, mouth slightly parted.
James had played her to sleep. He took a moment to memorize the sight of her, safe and at peace under the quilt his mother had made for her hope chest.
Then he thought back over other pieces he’d set aside, the ones that were too sweet or too sorrowful or both, and he began to play again.
