Feature Friday – Monstrous Tales

Feature Friday at KellyApple.com

Let’s back to where it all began…Ari Colton and her insatiable ways. Heh.

Monstrous Tales: The Complete Series is a compilation of books 1-10 of the Monstrous Tales serial and it contains:

one over-sexed co-eda gentle monster with tentaclesa whole lot of other monsterssexy times in the woods and a cave and a lake and a labyrinth and…well, anywhere you can imagine, reallythe start of a monstrous revolution (although, to be fair, the monsters don’t know that yet)

Ari is a little immature and a lot wild when we first meet her, but I like to think she grows as the series continues. She might not know what she wants (or what direction she wants her life to take) at the beginning of this book, but she’s starting to figure things out by the end. Kind of.

And she changes things for her monstrous friends in a BIG way down the road.

But before we get to that, she has to bang her way through the monstrous community, find true love, and save the day for her monstrous honey.

I just can’t keep away from that grumpy gargoyle and his sweet, human mate.

This book contains:

Vane and Cin were already fun to write and then I got to throw in that deserted old-West town. HA! I have a great weakness for deserted and/or broken places so building Cobalt’s town was a hoot.

A road trip to find a brother and a journey to face the past. BOY did I like this one!

When the gods wake, the impossible can happen…

For Cin Malone, wanting to know more about her gargoyle mate’s people seems like a no-brainer. Finding out Vane has a brother potentially living close by is the perfect opportunity for a road trip.

After all, spending time with her grumbly honey is no hardship and meeting family is part and parcel with the mate thing, right?

Who would have ever guessed that one innocent road trip would have the power to change the world. Plus, you know, there might be some curse breaking, some treasure finding, and the type of family reunion no one was expecting.

Warning: This book contains family. Not all of which is good. Fortunately for Vane, the good far outweighs the bad. Double fortunately, this road trip gives Vane and Cin the opportunity to connect in plenty of places, if you know what I mean.

Feature Friday – Cursed Heart

Feature Friday at KellyApple.com

Welcome to Grimwood!

Sure, sure. It’s a little dangerous and you’ve got curses running wild and the forest is dying and things are a little shady, but WELCOME ANYWAY!

At the heart of all this craziness is the Grimm family. One tiny wish turned into a clusterfuck of epic proportions when the witch in the woods comes for payment. Five hundred years later, the Grimm family is scattered, the woods are rotting from within, and the legacy the family was supposed to uphold has all but been forgotten.

WHEW!

Yeah, the Grimms are a little messed up, but they find their way. Eventually.

Oh, heyyyy. It’s time for Lorianne’s story. She’s…well, the lady is a mess. She was the catalyst for what happened to her family and watching them fall apart pretty much destroyed her.

BUT…she deserved her HEA as much as anyone. More, possibly. With her children finding their happiness, it only seemed fair that she’d get the one thing her heart desired most. Her family reunited.

But first, her honey bunny. He’s sleeping the sleep of the dead in a tower in the center of the forest and Lorianne needs to find him to break him free.

Enjoy this gender-flipped retelling of Sleeping Beauty in the epic conclusion…

Lorianne Grimm is a woman broken. Her children lost through thievery and curses, she retreated to the woods to grieve. Finally coming to terms with her loss, she emerged and was dealt one last blow… her husband had disappeared and she, herself, had been cursed to remain eternally young.

Unable to face her pain, Lorianne once again fled into the heart of the woods and tried for five hundred years to forget.

But lately there have been whispers on the wind that speak of great change within Grimwood. Magic is coming back to life and for it to properly take root Lorianne will have to take her place in the tale.

Hidden deep in Grimwood is a castle. The stories say only those with the purest heart will be able to find it and navigate the treacherous path inside. With all the hatred churning within her for what was done to her family, Lorianne hardly considers herself pure. But the whispers tell of one last thing, a Grimm who was cursed into an enchanted sleep nearly five hundred years ago after losing his family. A Grimm who only waits for his lady love to awaken him.

For the chance to be with her husband again, Lorianne will follow her heart and risk everything. Including her life.

WHEW!

Yeah, the Grimms are a little messed up, but they find their way. Eventually.

It’s Fen’s turn to shine. The youngest of the Grimm children, he had (potentially) the most normal life out of all of them. Well, until he was cursed to turn wolf-y and stay forever young (because a curse isn’t a curse if you don’t suffer the loss of your wife and children and get to live lifetimes with the guilt, amirite?!?!) and he retreated to the woods to live the life of a hermit.

Gretchen is a wake-up call of sorts to Fen. She shakes him out of his apathy and reminds him of the obligations that tie his family to the land.

This is a very loose (VERY LOOSE!) retelling of Goldilocks. It’s not even gender-flipped because I needed Fen to be the grumpy bear (well, wolf) in the forest whose life Gretchen disrupts when she wanders into his orbit. She might not eat his porridge or sleep in his bed, but she upends his existence all the same.

So enjoy this next step in the story of how the Grimms took back their legacy and worked on restoring Grimwood to the glory it used to be.

Growing up wild in Grimwood, Gretchen Malloy knows her corner of the woods like the back of her hand. Stumbling over a previously undiscovered cabin to explore is the highlight of her lazy summer days.

Only, the cabin she found isn’t empty and the brooding, angry man who chases her away is almost too much excitement for her tastes. For all she might not be wanted, Gretchen’s terminal curiosity sends her back again and again until an unexpected friendship blossoms.

Fen Grimm knows exactly what he is—the crusty old loner who’s given up on the world outside his cabin and who wants nothing to do with Grimwood or any of its many inhabitants. He’s already loved and lost enough and he has no need to watch another mortal age and die before his eyes.

If only Grimwood didn’t need him, he’d be content to live out the rest of his long days alone. But when the magic in the wood calls, a Grimm must answer.

It’s Adria and Micah’s turn to find their HEA and unlock the next part of the un-cursing. Adria is a Grimm descendant who believes if she sets foot off her mountain, the wolfen curse in the Grimm bloodline will strike. So she doesn’t leave her mountain. Ever.

Enter Micah Redfield (Connor’s brother). He kinda, sorta sets them out on an adventure into the heart of the mountains and starts falling for the prickly Adria along the way.

This was supposed to be a land-locked, gender-flipped retelling of The Little Mermaid and it’s probably the only one I feel like I missed the mark on as far as the retelling part went. To be fair, Micah did “wash up” on Adria’s doorstep and she’s more or less the princess of the mountain, but I didn’t get to wriggle a sea witch (mountain witch?) into the story and that’s a crying shame!

Still! Enjoy your gender-flipped retelling(-ish) of The Little Mermaid and the next piece of the Grimwood puzzle getting worked out!

Adria Grimm lives at the highest point in Grimwood. The stories of what would befall her if she ever ventured down the mountain to the forest’s edge are cautionary tales she’s always lived by. Becoming a slave to the curse that hides in her blood isn’t the fate she dreams of for herself.

When an injured man collapses on her doorstep, Adria reluctantly nurses him back to health. The man is aggravating and demanding and Adria can’t wait until he’s well enough to be on his way.

Waking with little memory of what brought him to the mountains, Micah Redfield has to piece his past together before he can complete the quest that drove him to this remote location. As it turns out, Adria has the answers he’s been looking for, but deciphering the clues she’s been left is only the beginning of their journey.

Working together, they will have to find a way to unlock the ancient magic hidden in the heart of the mountain before Grimwood itself falls.

Cursed Bones is Isobel and Cade’s story. Isobel, as you might recall, is the Grimm twin left behind. The one who grew up petulant and spoiled thanks to the heaping dose of grief and guilt her parents dealt with after Zel’s abduction. When Cade finds her, she’s living in a decaying manor house deep in Grimwood and she’s pretty darn close to feral. But then, countless years alone with nothing but the dying woods for company can have that effect on a person.

A little more of the magic (and curses!) of Grimwood are revealed in this gender-flipped retelling of Beauty and the Beast.

Once upon a time, Isobel Grimm had been the favored daughter of one of the oldest families in Grimwood. Prideful, arrogant, and vain, she found out the hard way that not all those she saw as beneath her are weak. Fleeing to her family manor hidden in the depths of the great forest seemed her only option when a powerful curse stole her looks and made her a monster in the eyes of most.

When an intruder invades her sanctuary, Isobel is forced to face some painful truths—she’s lived in solitude far longer than she realized and her problems are only the precursor for something far more deadly. For the trees in the forest are dying, stricken by a mysterious disease rotting them slowly from the inside.

In the manor hidden away from prying eyes, a pact has fallen and the entire forest is paying the price. As a Grimm, it’s Isobel’s duty to right this wrong and reverse the curse spreading across the land.

If she can’t, all of Grimwood may fall.

Cursed Wolves gives us Lucy and Connor’s story. While Lucy isn’t one of the main cursed Grimms, she is a descendant of the family and…she has a bit of a curse of her own. Namely, she becomes a wolf every so often.

We also get introduced to the Redfield family. Connor’s brother plays a part in a later book and, well, I like those Redfields. Lucy likes them too. Mostly Connor, really, but you know what I’m saying.

Enjoy this gender-flipped retelling of Little Red Riding Hood and stray a little deeper into the wood.

Lucy Grimm knows what it’s like to be on the outside. Ever since her curse kicked in on her 18th birthday, she’s lived in the woods on her own, cut off from everyone but the other cursed and slave to the cycles of the moon. Her one joy in life is spying on hunky Connor Redfield while he works at his grandmother’s inn.

Connor knows someone’s out there watching him, but he can never get close enough to catch them in the act. When he decides to take matters into his own hands and lay down a trap for the peeping tom, he doesn’t expect to end up with a bundle of nervous woman who runs every chance she gets.

He certainly doesn’t believe she’s one of the legendary cursed wolves that roam the woods.

For all that she’s fighting against herself, Lucy can’t help but like the burly lumberjack with a heart of gold. With the moon coming up on full, Lucy doesn’t dare trust herself when her wolf takes control. But Connor remains unconvinced and the more time Lucy spends with him, the more she longs to stay.

Can a cursed wolf find love with a mortal man? Or will her beastly side destroy her heart’s desire?
