Deniable Plausibility

beastmaster-ferretsA friend and prominent early reviewer of my writing, “Jeff” (real name, Jeff), has just commented on my capabilities at ruining movies.

Which is probably why I tried to write as realistic (AS POSSIBLE) a zombie novel. Yes, writing a zombie novel is unrealistic. That’s unavoidable. But I tried to make it plausible (and several reviewers have pointed that out as a benefit). But others have been unimpressed.

Opinions come free. Everyone has one. There is no discounting the opinion of someone who h...

Death and Taxes

deathandtaxesOur new Constitution is now established, and has an appearance that promises permanency; but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.

— Benjamin Franklin

Yesterday, I had the most unusual of mixed emotions. Scanning through the daily mail, I saw an assortment of bills and junk, commingled with the one addition unique to this time of year: tax documents. This is the realm of the groan and shrug, the ‘oy, this again’ feeling. Which was certainly one side of my emot...

Eddie! Half!

Eddie MurphyFrom Blood Reborn has topped the halfway point, in two respects. It reminds me of the old Eddie Murphy sketch where he said his wife would want “Half!” if they split. But this is a GOOD half. Not a bitter-argument half. First, it is more than half of the *expected* word count. But that doesn’t mean a lot, considering that the total word count is an estimate. I might suddenly contract Jordan-itis or RRMartin’s Disease and make this a thousand pager. But I seriously doubt it.

The more reliable s...

The Good, the Bad, and the Average

clint-eastwoodThat title makes it sound like the average is bad, but honestly it is not.

On the first day of this year, I got my first 2-star review for The Oasis of Filth. I am 100% certain that the reviewer felt that the rating was deserved and so I in no way discount it. A lot of other people have read the book and not commented. And many others have read it and given it favorable reviews.

But I get it. I have been told countless times in my life, “You’ve GOT to see this movie!” or “You’ve GOT to read thi...

News from the bridge

Peter-pan-disneyscreencaps_com-15I am so excited to post thatFrom Blood Rebornis making excellent progress. The story has been fully fleshed out and writing has been making great strides. In fact, one very important element, that I am calling the ‘bridge element,’ has been completed (this will make much more sense once you read the story, sorry!). I think it’s very compelling, and I cannot wait for everyone to read it. Right now, a lot of tension is building, and some people may not be what they seem.

The word count is nearin...

The Value of an Ending

the endRight now, I am in the middle of writingFrom Blood Reborn, which is the third part ofThe Oasis of Filth series and, importantly, its ending. [Note: The progress meter you see on the side of my website is accurate, but only reflects finished words written, not outlines for all the other chapters in progress... just FYI]

The process of writing these three volumes has opened my eyes to a new perspective about serial literature. From a strict reader-only perspective (a.k.a. the perspective I had f...
