Anyone Can Write a Book

writers-blockAnyone can write a book. It’s true. Writing a book is easy.

To quote my friend and editor, Christopher Durso, “There. I said it.”

So if you happen upon this post and you arethinking about writing a book, stop thinking about it and do it. Because writing a book is easy. Yes, it takes time, but it is not hard. You probably learned to write sentences and craft paragraphs back in grade school. Just do that a bunch of times until the book is done. Easy, schmeasy.

But…

Writing agood book is very hard.

There was a secret giveaway… and Katrina saw it first!

Of course I can tell how many emails get sent, how many get opened, how many people clicks links… but I couldn’t really tell if anyone was actuallyreading the newsletter.

Were people reading everything I was sending out, all the way to the bottom? To me, this was important. A lot of times, I have several things to talk about, so if I lose newsletter readers along...

Have a Seat by the Fire

Oh, hello Friend! I didn’t see you there. Please, come and have a seat by the fire.

What have I been up to recently? Well, isn’t that sweet of you to ask. It’s been a lot of things. Here goes.

They have korn! It may be on a stick!

Uh oh. The Earth revolved around theSun again. You know what that means… I have arbitrarily been upgraded to another age. But, when one does such things, one should do them as stupidly as possible. So I chose the Maryland Renaissance Festival.

An Ambitious Plan

SONY DSCIf you’ve stopped by my site before, you may have noted the ‘John Black series’ link atop this page, or the listing along the right side for a forthcoming book titledFor I Could Lift My Finger and Black Out the Sun. These two things are, in fact, one and the same.

John Black is the main character of my new work-in-progress, and the title of that novel is the lengthy one I just mentioned. What makes this novel more ambitious is how I plan to produce it.

For my first novel,The Oasis of Filth, I w...

Well, I’m Back.

IMAG0257After a whirlwind trip to London and various parts of Scotland, I’m back. Got in a bit of writing for the new John Black books, sprinkled among these other happenings:

Saw a large number of castles; slept in two.
May or may not have heard a ghost in second castle.
May or may not have seen Nessie at Loch Ness.
Got hit by a double-decker bus in London, just outside Westminster Abbey. Really. Thankfully it was more love-tap than running-over.
Saw the Edinburgh Royal Military Tattoo.
In the rain.
Watche...

There Can Be Only One

2046472-367fff8eTomorrow, I head to London. Not only is this a family vacation, it’s also my first ever science fiction convention… specifically Loncon3, the 72nd World Science Fiction Convention!

I’ll only actually be able to attend the conference for one day, but plan to hit the exhibition hall, a seminar or two, and the Hugo Awards ceremony — hoping George R. R. Martin and other big names are there.

I may also drop off a few copies of my books for the London market. You know, a little bookstore shenanigans...

Blinded Me with Science

SLS Booster 11X7 K65634In recent months, I’ve been fascinated by two science stories: the EmDrive, a propellant-less space thruster, and the discovery and confirmation of preserved soft tissue from aTyrannosaurs rex.

The first story conjures up images of a new age in space flight. The technology could already be strong enough to power satellites. In the future, it could mean continuous acceleration for interplanetary missions.

The second harkens back toJurassic Park and makes you wonder if one day, even in my own lif...
