How to Tell When Your Writing Goes From OK to GOOD!

S. Hendricks ~ 2014

S. Hendricks ~ 2014

You think you hear what your character hears and you turn around to make sure no one is actually behind you.

You clap your hands after you finish reading what you wrote because it really WOWED you.

You walk around your house saying “I amaze myself. I’m soooooo good at this!”

You stop crossing your fingers when you hit send on your submissions and simply think “this is getting accepted, they would be crazy not to!”

You receive a rejection and think, pheww because I found a better place to submit it to anyways.

Appreciation Monday

20140316_131528Appreciation: Literacy

Growing up I hated reading, most likely because I was awful at it. Most likely because I couldn’t read much of anything. I hated when the teacher called on me to read aloud because I knew so few words. Over time I became really good at finding ways to get out of being called on to read aloud. I would start coughing, disappear to use the restroom, or raise my hand to read when I knew the sentence had words I knew, preventing the teacher from being able to pick me a second time.

I will spare you the details of what I did and what happened to get me to the point I am today. FAST FORWARD…

Now I love to read! AND I’m an author. Something I never imagined as a child, sitting there doing everything possible to keep from having to read, that I would be today.

* FUN FACT * Child Genius 101 was originally titled Literacy From Birth by my publisher until a last minute change.

2 YUMMY AND 1 FUN WAY TO USE TORTILLAS

tortilla 014KIDS: Explore the yummy taste of tortillas, and even create artwork!

Take half of the tortilla and spread peanut butter on it, then spread the other half with jelly. You can then fold it in half and enjoy.

Make mini cinnamon rolls. Take a little bit of butter/margarine and spread it onto the tortilla. Place in the microwave for 15 seconds. Then sprinkle sugar and cinnamon over top of it. Carefully roll it up really tight. You can now eat it as is, or you can have your parent cut it up for you, making mini cinnamon roll tortillas. tortilla 009

You might have tortillas that have expired, and are not very tasty. Use them to make artwork. Get out some cookie cutters and paint. You can paint the tortillas, and then cut them with the cookie cutter, or use the cookie cutter first, and then paint. You can then take the tortilla and stamp it onto the paper to make a print. Carefully, they are a little tricky to pick up. You can try tongs to lift the tortilla up if needed.

Fun with a Band-Aid

Have kids? (Or even if you like slightly fun things).

Turn off the lights in your bathroom before you open the wrapper for the band-aid. In a dark room you can see a glow around the edges as you separate the wrapper due to electrical charges. Its been referred to as triboluminescence. I stumbled upon this little bit of science as I put a band-aid on in a rather dark room not to long ago.

Appreciation Monday

I am appreciative of my washer and dryer. Don’t laugh it’s true. My mom used to hang dry all of her laundry when I was a child. Well her nursing assistant would hang the wet clothing from the washing machine during my mom’s naps. I always loved the idea of a clothes line, my grandma and grandpa had one in their backyard in Minnesota. Of course I didn’t realize when they come off the line they are not soft at all, at least not in California air. My mom’s clothing line hung on the side of the house near the lemon and lime trees. I’m not sure if I will ever line dry my clothing as there are often some interesting odors that make their way into the backyard. I love that I can wear something, make a mess and in two hours be wearing it completely clean again. Saving me so much time over what I am sure was a long and tiring task of hand-washing and line drying clothing in the past.

3 Things I Learned This Week

There is a store that I never knew existed. I drove past and was…intrigued by their sign ~ “Hair Salon and Videos”

Sometimes a cat will sneak into your garage, be prepared

I was informed that one needs a wheelchair license to self-propel themselves in their wheelchair. Or at least that was what I was told by a gentleman

Chicken and Goat Cheese Sandwich

20140225_170905Since my appreciation Monday was about cooking, I figured what a good time to share with my readers my delicious chicken and goat cheese sandwich recipe. Yummy and healthy!

2 slices of bread (I love sourdough for this sandwich) lightly toasted

enough goat cheese for spreading as you would normally add for a condiment such as mayonnaise

handful of spinach or cilantro (or a little of both if you like)

2 chicken tenders cooked and largely shredded

2 large slices of tomatoes  20140127_173110-1

Throw the ingredients together as you would any sandwich. I personally like to put the cooked chicken on last, while it’s still warm, so it warms up the goat cheese just a bit.

Appreciation Monday

I really enjoy cooking, even after a long day. I enjoy fresh foods and making as much from scratch as possible. I am appreciative of my ever growing cooking skills (I used to only experiment in the baking department). In an ever quick, easy, unhealthy go-go-go society with To-Go meals everywhere….I am appreciative of my homemade meals.

Unseen ~ 5 Minute Fiction

'94 Oregon coast

’94 Oregon coast

A breath as deep as fog

Vision of barbed wire and glass

Gait unsteady, heart of splinters ~

Sand between to soften the edges

Wind to blow the fog

Strength to balance the gait

Rainbow after the rain to clear the vision

A smile from far to mend the splinters
