Playing Pretend

fedora

I spent a lot of time in high school feeling silly. Like the one people were making fun of, the one who stuttered or said the wrong thing or who had the fact that they were sad or embarrassed or afraid written right across the center of their face. I hated that what I was thinking and feeling was so obvious all the time. And part of it was paranoia, I’m sure, but part of it was true: Iwasthe one who people – even my friends – teased. A lot of the time, I was the one the joke was about. Maybe b...

Ok To Wake “Alarm” Clock = Very Good Thing

OK, so the transition to the Big Boy Bed was a necessary one – our crib is going to get called into action in a few months, and regardless, he couldn’t stay in a cribforever- but was not without its mini-bumps. Mostly the mini-bump involving a child who has suddenly discovered that…hold on a second…he canTOTALLY GO ADVENTURING WHENEVER HE WANTS.

Hanging out in the hallway while a blissfully unaware Mom watches Walking Deaddownstairs? Oh yeah.

Down to chill on the couch with some dinosaurs at th...

OK, I’m Officially Fascinated: Oil Pulling

Screen Shot 2014-03-11 at 11.39.09 AM

Stunning, I know.

Let me start by saying that I don’t really “do” health-type fads, and certainly not cleanses and/or detoxes, for reasons that I’ve documented extensively here. But I was seeing this “oil pulling” thing everywhere, and finally I had to try it: it sounded so cool, and so satisfying (you can actuallysee the toxins?!) and didn’t involve not eating, and the benefits that people were saying it had for your body were so tempting that I broke. I just kind of love the idea that somethi...

Memory (or “First Knuckle”) Rings At Every Price

first knuckle rings

Memory rings (also known as “midi rings” and “first knuckle rings”) are one of my absolute favorite accessories – I wear them every single day of my life, no matter how casual or fancy I’m being, and love how they’re simultaneously elegant and a little edgy. They were super-trendy for awhile, but at this point I think they’ve transcended being a “thing” and have become just another category of accessory – meaning that while you can find them for next-to-nothing, they’re not necessarily a bad...

Rainbow Brite

rainbow outfit

For our last day in Florida, I thought I’d dress up like a rainbow.

I rarely wear super-bright colors – and even more rarely wear a whole bunch of them at once – but I was inspired by my rainbow jelly sandals and the presence of palm trees to get crazy with it.

Purple bag, orange shorts, chartreuse cardigan, turquoise belt and jewelry…why not? To me, this look works because while the colors are all bright, they’re also all the samekindof bright (vibrant and jewel-toned), because all of the piec...

Lately I’ve been attending a few mom-related events, which has resulted in the making of a couple of neat mom-related discoveries.

Huggies Clutch ‘n’ Clean Refillable Wipes Case

First discovery: this.

I am so excited that Huggies thought of this product, mostly because it means that a) I do not need to break out fabric scissors and a glue stick and b) I am mildly psychic.

Back when I first had my son, I remember a friend sho...

The Cookery: Dobbs Ferry

When I first started blogging a few years ago I was over on Tumblr, a platform that lent itself to much shorter, more diary-style posts (“Here I am at sushi! Here is the shirt I bought! Here is my dog!” et cetera). And so I did a lot of blogging about local spots I went to. If I went to a restaurant and ate something, it probably ended up getting posted on my site.

I don’t really do that anymore, mostly because I don’t want to bore non-Westchester-or-NYC readers, but every so often I discover...

True, and an excellent thing to remember when big (and potentially scary) changes are on the horizon.

Jessica Lange was named the new face of Marc Jacobs Beauty. I LOVE this.

These nude pumps are PERFECT.

So are these completely classic shoulder bags from Everlane (favorite: the Portfolio).

James Murphy of LCD Sound System has come up with the most wonderful, oddly simple idea for adding some beauty to the NYC subway system (which could use it). He also once gave Kendrick directions to the subway...

We have discovered the joy that is hiding underneath couch cushions. (The execution could still use a little work.)

Fuzzy Wuzzy Was A Chameleon

Kendrick thinks that what happens to my hair in the presence of humidity is really funny.

fuzzy hair

So much so that he had me pose for a photo while pretending that I was in a 1980s Mentos ad.

It’s true: I turn into a lioness in the presence of even a single atom of moisture; always have. In years past, the fluffball on top of my head has made me nuts; nowadays…less so. And this is partially because I really do try to keep my hair in good condition these days (because healthy hair = less frizzy hair), bu...
