And My “Big Name” Author Blurb goes to…
When asked which author I wanted reviewing ARCHETYPE, I said, “No idea.”
What I really wanted to say were the names of the two authors who are my go-to when I don’t want something new to read. When I want the comfort of the world/characters they created. I have one for adult, and one for young adult. The reason I didn’t say their names was because they’re fantasy writers, and ARCHETYPE is not.
Little did I know that one of them had been working on an adult sci-fi with my publisher, Dutton. L...

Backstory. Get Over It.
Backstory drudge and muck clogging up the beginning. We’ve all done it. Writers, I mean. If you haven’t, congratulations. You’re a Unicorn. And I hate envy you.
I don’t know about you guys, but it took me years to figure it out. Beginnings wouldn’t be so hard if we could just let go of that past life our main character(s) has. And, of course, we write and write and rewrite and rewrite the story so much that every damn detail feels like solid gold.
I’ve been thinking lately about why beginni...

Dear Teen Me

Hold onto that.
Don’t listen to Dad when he points out the starving artists and scoffs about how they didn’t have the common sense to have a backup plan. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Because for us artists, there is no backup plan. There’s settling. Settling means you quit.

Now, I know you think you want to be a jazz singer. I also know you k...

#Writing and the Stages of (my) Grief
So I’m in this place of absolute freedom right now. And it’s weird. It’s like I’m that unagented, unpublished writer again, and I have the freedom to write all the craptastic novels I want.
But I won’t.
Not on purpose, anyway.
I’ve chosen to spend my deadline-free time with a new novel, which as you know, is always exciting in the beginning. I’ll probably love it until the middle, in which case I’ll consider throwing it like a petulant child into a raging fire pit.
Being on the still-smoking...

Mr. Waters & The Great Backfire
Two things you should know about me…
1. My idea of catching up on the news is to watch HBO’s “The Newsroom.” True Story.
2. I LOVE a good “What If” question. I blame my Dad, the Conspiracy Theorist.
Add to this the fact that Mr. Waters is a Republican who actually keeps up with world events…
…and gives me the condescending eyebrow when I get all What are you talking about???
(China could invade the US and I wouldn’t know it.)
Let’s just say it gets interesting around here.
Mr. Waters tries...

The Unexpected: the Good, the Bad, and the Pearlized
I had something fun arrive in the mail unexpectedly… My jacket cover. On pearlized paper. And it’s gorgeous.
I cannot wait to see this on an actual book. (I might have stuck it on one already…you know, to test ‘er out.)
More unexpected…
Lots of galley’s are getting ready to go out! The number I heard had to actually set in for a couple days, and now gives me heart palpitations. Dutton isn’t messing around. Like, at all. I’m sort of in this place now where I need to start bracing fo...

The Awesome (Cover Reveal), and the Awesome (other stuff)
So I always intend to do these excitable posts all partay style, and throw confetti, and happy dance until we all fall down. (*chuckles* Oh, I’m still dancing. Never you fear.)
Then things happen all whiz bang fast, and I end up with whiplash, and oh my god will you hurry up with that other draft type things are said…
OY.
Anyway! I have a cover! And I have release dates! And I have…
A COVER!
I can’t tell you how much I adore this cover. And now it’s, like, all over the place it seems. (Thi...

Shout Out to @CureFA_Org ~ Help Find a Cure
I’m taking a quick time-out from writing to be human, and utilize my meager platform to tell you all about this organization that blows my mind.
For the past few years, I have had the opportunity to work alongside Ron Bartek and his amazing group at FARA for a charity golf tournament. And every year I wish I could shout to the world how important it is to find a cure for these children and adults alike. Friedrich’s Ataxia has no cure. And we need to find one. That’s why FARA exists.
FARA's...

1: I have BIG NEWS! 2: I realize that’s a lame title.
I mean… How exactly do you title a post in which you’re doing this:
And this:
Because I heard from THIS GIRL RIGHT HERE:
…and now Archetype and Prototype are going to be published in the UK, New Zealand, and Australia.
Let’s face it. There’s just no appropriate title for that.
There’s only this:

And this:
And, finally, this:
