Mentoring Matters for Spiritual Growth

Every Christian needs both a Paul and a Timothy.

A “Paul” is somebody who has been a Christian longer than you and is helping to train and encourage you. That person may only be a month older than you, but he or she has probably walked longer with the Lord and is more spiritually mature and can mentor you.

A “Timothy” is somebody who hasn’t been a Christian as long as you whose faith you are helping to build. You offer that person encouragement and discipleship as he or she grows in the Lord.

So, you have a Paul and a Timothy in your life. But you are also a Paul and a Timothy to others.

In 2 Timothy, Paul says this to Timothy: “The things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others” (2 Timothy 2:2 NIV).

We see four generations in that verse. Paul says to Timothy that he helped mentor him, meaning Paul guided him to spiritual maturity. Now Timothy must find somebody to mentor, and then that person can find somebody else to mentor.

Don’t be intimidated by the word “mentoring.” Mentoring is as easy as taking someone to breakfast once a month and asking, “How’s it going?” You just need to be a friend. Listen to, encourage, and pray for that person. You don’t have to be a “perfect Christian” to do this. You just have to be willing.

To fully live out God’s calling on your life, you need other people. You will more fully grow as a disciple when you learn from other believers who are more mature than you and when you share your wisdom and experience with believers who are younger than you.

Your Integrity Shows Your Faithfulness

It’s common today to hear people say, “What you do in your private life is nobody’s business.” Well, that isn’t really true. What you do in your private life—behind closed doors or out of view of other people—builds and reveals your true character. And God sees it just as clearly as the things you do in public.

In fact, the small, unseen things you do are the seeds to God’s public blessing on your life. You cannot compartmentalize your life and say, “I have integrity in my public life, just not in my private life.” I bet you could make a list right now of public figures that have tried to live this way, only to have their private indiscretions lead to public scandal and personal downfall. No matter what they say, any leader who is not faithful in small matters will not be faithful in large matters.

This principle is nothing new. Jesus said, “If you have not been faithful with what belongs to someone else, who will give you what belongs to you?” (Luke 16:12 GNT).

For centuries, everybody who learned a skill, trade, or vocation learned it through an apprenticeship. If you were going to be a mechanic, you apprenticed to another mechanic and served in that person’s business before you started your own. As the apprentice, you had to be responsible with your master’s business before you were entrusted with your own.

This principle of apprenticeship applies to every area of your life. It applies to how you handle other people’s money, how you handle other people’s possessions, and even how you handle other people’s ministry before God gives you your own.

Before God gave me my own ministry, I served as a youth pastor under another man’s ministry. God was watching how I handled it; he was testing my integrity. I needed to prove my faithfulness in that ministry before God would allow me to lead the ministry of Saddleback Church.

If someone loans you a car, how well do you take care of it? If a family lets you stay in their house for vacation, do you treat it as well as you treat your own home? When no one is watching at your job, do you work diligently?

God is watching and testing your integrity. You show that you can be trusted with the big things by being faithful in the small things.

Levanta tu Bandera Blanca

“Confía en el Señor con todo tu corazón; no dependas de tu propio entendimiento. Busca su voluntad en todo lo que hagas, y él te mostrará cuál camino tomar.” Proverbios 3:5-6 (NTV)

La entrega significa dejarle el futuro a Dios. Proverbios 3:5-6 dice: “Confía en el Señor con todo tu corazón; no dependas de tu propio entendimiento. Busca su voluntad en todo lo que hagas, y él te mostrará cuál camino tomar” (NTV).

¿Qué área de tu vida no le has entregado a Dios? Has entregado la cocina y la sala. Pero ¿qué pasa con el dormitorio de tu vida? ¿Qué pasa con el armario de tu vida? ¿Qué hay del garaje de tu vida? ¿Qué área de tu vida no la has entregado?

Algunos de ustedes no han entregado su vida sexual. Tú dices: “Sé que Dios dice que el sexo es sólo para el matrimonio, pero voy a hacerlo a mi manera”. Por eso es que estás bajo estrés.

Algunos de ustedes no han entregado sus finanzas a Dios. “Sé que Dios dice que debo devolverle el 10 por ciento, pero no puedo pagar el diezmo”. Y por eso estás bajo estrés.

Algunos de ustedes no han entregado sus relaciones a Dios. “Sé que debería perdonar a esa persona que me lastimó, pero no voy a perdonarlo”. Es por eso que estás bajo estrés.

Algunos de ustedes tienen un pecado secreto que no se lo han entregado a Dios. Tienes un hábito que no le has entregado a Dios. Tienes un dolor o un complejo que le no has entregado a Dios.

Algunos de ustedes nunca han entregado su vida a Jesucristo. Nunca te has rendido para ser bautizado. No has encontrado una familia en la iglesia.

La entrega es levantar la bandera blanca y decir, “Dios, la guerra se acabó. No voy a pelear más contigo. Quiero serenidad, no estrés.

¿Estás cansado de estar en guerra con Dios? Yo creo que sí. La entrega es la máxima expresión de fe.

Necesitas la Presencia de Dios, no su Explicación

“Sé paciente y espera las obras del SEÑOR.” Salmo 37:7a (PDT)

Una de las razones por las que la gente lucha con el contentamiento es porque siempre estamos buscando explicaciones del por qué suceden las cosas en nuestras vidas. Nos asusta que Dios no nos ofrezca explicaciones. ¿Por qué no lo hace?

Porque te está probando. Él te está poniendo a prueba para ver si dejas ir el control y aprenderás a estar satisfecho, ya sea que lo explique o no.

Dios no te debe explicación de nada, y no lo entenderías, aunque te la diera.

Pero incluso si consiguieras una explicación, todavía no quitaría el dolor. No vas a saber por qué la mayoría de las cosas suceden hasta llegar al otro lado de la muerte.

Dios no va a darte una explicación, pero te pondrá a prueba.

Recuerdo cuando era un niño, que la única vez que nuestra aula en la escuela estaba en silencio era durante una prueba. El maestro diría: “¡No hablar! Tomen sus lápices y contesten la prueba. “Incluso el maestro se quedaría en silencio.

Cuando Dios está en silencio en tu vida, estás pasando por una prueba. Cuando no escuchas a Dios y lo sientes como a un millón de kilómetros de distancia, ¡eso es una prueba! El maestro siempre está en silencio cuando los estudiantes hacen una prueba. Cuando Dios está en silencio en tu vida, tu fe está siendo probada. ¿Dejarás ir el control, o te agarrarás más fuertemente? ¿Aprenderás a estar satisfecho?

Cuando estés pasando por un dolor esta semana o el próximo mes o este año, realmente no necesitas la explicación de Dios. Necesitas la presencia de Dios.

“Sé paciente y espera las obras del SEÑOR” (Salmo 37:7a PDT).

The Value of Faith in a Faithless World

We live in an increasingly faithless world. It is a secular world of shifting values and growing egocentrism. If Jesus came back today, how many people of faith would he find? And would you be one of them?

The Bible makes it clear that God is looking for faithful people. In 2 Chronicles 16:9 it says, “For the eyes of the Lord search back and forth across the whole earth, looking for people whose hearts are perfect toward him, so that he can show his great power in helping them” (TLB).

God is seeking faithful people because he wants to bless them. He wants to show his love through his great power. Our faithfulness is the key to unlocking his blessing in our lives.

Jesus said, “According to your faith let it be done to you” (Matthew 9:29 NIV). God wants to pour blessings into all areas of your life—your family, your career, your finances, your health, your relationships. This blessing may not look like we expect it to, but God is working it out in our lives nonetheless. And he will do it according to the level of your faith. If you have great faith, you will have great blessing. If you have a little faith, you will receive a little blessing. But if you have no faith, God’s blessing will not be in your life.

Sadly, faithful people who really trust God and live for Christ day in and day out are hard to find. The Bible says, “Everyone talks about how loyal and faithful he is, but just try to find someone who really is!” (Proverbs 20:6 GNT).

When sin entered the world with Adam and Eve, we were all corrupted. None of us does what is right all the time. But faith is the key to victory. The greater our faith, the more victory we will experience in our lives.

“Every child of God can defeat the world, and our faith is what gives us this victory” (1 John 5:4 CEV).

Ríndete y Reconoce que Dios está en Control

“¡Ríndanse! ¡Reconozcan que yo soy Dios! ¡Yo estoy por encima de las naciones! ¡Yo estoy por encima de toda la tierra!” Salmo 46:10 (DHH)

Cada día, tienes que decidir quién va a estar en control de tu vida, tú o Dios.

Esa decisión es una batalla. Hay cosas en tu vida que deseas controlar. Quieres hacer tus propias reglas. Pero siempre el alivio del estrés comienza con dejar a Dios ser Dios. Siempre empieza diciendo, “Dios, estoy renunciando al control, porque tú puedes controlar las cosas que están fuera de control en mi vida.”

Salmo 46:10 dice, “¡Ríndanse! ¡Reconozcan que yo soy Dios! ¡Yo estoy por encima de las naciones! ¡Yo estoy por encima de toda la tierra!” Salmo 46:10 (DHH)

No sé lo que vas a enfrentar esta semana. Tú tampoco lo sabes. Pero te puedo decir lo que Dios quiere que hagas: Ríndete y sabrás. Rinde el control y sabrás que Dios está en control. ¡Ríndete y sabrás! Este es el primer paso a la serenidad en tu vida.

Cuando nos enfrentamos a situaciones fuera de control, tendemos a ir a uno de los dos extremos. Para algunos de ustedes, entre más fuera de control está tu vida, más tratas de controlar. Algunos de ustedes hacen exactamente lo contrario: ¡sólo te rindes! Haces una fiesta de compasión y te invitas a ti mismo.

Estas dos reacciones al estrés son tontas. No funcionan.  En lugar de ser víctima o ser hiperactivo que controla, debes hacer la oración de rendición.

La razón número uno por la que estás bajo estrés, es porque estás en conflicto con Dios. Estás tratando de controlar cosas que solo Dios puede controlar. Tú no puedes controlar a tu esposo o a tus hijos o a tu esposa o tu trabajo, tu futuro, tu pasado o cualquiera de esas cosas. Cuanto más lo hagas, más estás tratando de jugar a ser Dios, y te pones en oposición a Dios. No sólo vas a perder ese conflicto, sino que también vas a cansarte.

Millones de personas hacen la oración de la serenidad, que se basa en la oración del Señor, pero la mayoría no ha leído nunca las últimas líneas de la oración: “Viviendo un día a la vez; Disfrutando un momento a la vez; Aceptando la dificultad como el camino hacia la paz; Tomando, como Jesús lo hizo, Este mundo pecador tal cual es, No como seria; Confiando que Tú harás que todo salga bien. Si me entrego a Tu voluntad; Para que sea razonablemente Feliz en esta vida. Y sumamente feliz contigo por siempre en la eternidad. AMEN.”

¡Ahí es donde está el poder! Hay poder cuando le rindes a Dios las cosas que has intentando quitarle a el control.

Don’t Give Up When Times Get Tough

Why do bad things happen to good people? Why do we have to suffer? Why is life so difficult sometimes?

As difficult as it is to understand, God can use your pain for his purpose. Don’t be surprised if he is using tough times in your life to test your faithfulness.

Faithful people keep on keeping on when other people choose to give up. Faithful people are diligent and determined. They are persistent. They change their perspective and focus on God’s promises in his Word.

In 2 Corinthians 4, Paul says you need to get the right perspective when you’re going through a problem. If you want to persist, don’t look at the temporary problem. Look at the long-term reward. Don’t look at the temporary pain; look at the long-term gain. Don’t look at it with the short-term view, “What’s happening to me right now?” Instead, look at the character that you are building because you haven’t given up. You’re hanging in there.

God is more interested in what you are becoming than what you accomplish.

If you are facing difficult times right now, I challenge you to write this verse on a 3×5 card and memorize it: “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up” (Galatians 6:9 NLT).

I pray it will encourage you to keep going. God is working in you and for you, at just the right time and in just the right ways. You will be rewarded for your faithfulness!

Dios está Cerca

“El Señor está cerca de quienes lo invocan” Salmo 145:18a (NVI)

Dios no está tan lejos como la Estrella más lejana. Él está tan cerca como tu siguiente latido. Él está justo ahí contigo a cada momento. La Biblia dice en Hechos 17:27 que, “Dios quería que la humanidad lo buscara y, aunque fuera a tientas, lo encontrara. Pero en realidad, Dios no está lejos de ninguno de nosotros” (PDT).

Podrás sentirte como si Dios estuviera a un millón de kilómetros de distancia. Pero tus sentimientos no siempre están en lo correcto -todos sabemos eso. La verdad es, que Dios está contigo justo ahora.

Porque Él es un Padre cercano:

Dios nunca está demasiado ocupado para ti. Así de cerca está. Ese es el tipo de amor que Él tiene. Salmos 145:18 dice. “El Señor está cerca de quienes lo invocan”. Cada vez que le llamas, Dios está cerca. Él piensa mucho en ti, más de lo que tu piensas en él. Él pensó en ti antes de que nacieras. Él piensa en ti cada momento de cada día. La verdad es que demasiadas veces estamos muy ocupados para Dios. Pero Él nunca está tan ocupado para nosotros.

Dios ama satisfacer tus necesidades. Él nunca lo hace a disgusto. ¡Él te ama! Mateo 7:11 dice, “Pues si ustedes… saben dar cosas buenas a sus hijos, ¡cuánto más su Padre que está en el cielo dará cosas buenas a los que le pidan!” Puedes disfrutar del hecho de que Dios disfruta darte cosas buenas.

Dios comprende tus heridas. Algunos de ustedes están atravesando por algo difícil esta semana, y necesitan este versículo: “El Señor está cerca de los quebrantados de corazón, y salva a los de espíritu abatido.” (Salmos 34:18 NVI).

Dios está cerca de ti, y Él entiende. Vuelve a Él.

Treat Your Treasures as a Trust

We never really own anything during our brief time on earth. God just loans it to us while we’re here. The Bible says, “The world and all that is in it belong to the Lord; the earth and all who live on it are his” (Psalm 24:1 GNT).

The first job God gave humans was to manage and take care of God’s “stuff” on earth. This role has never been rescinded. It is a part of our purpose today. Everything we enjoy is to be treated as a trust that God has placed in our hands.

Years ago, a couple let my wife and me use their beautiful, beachfront home in Hawaii for a vacation. We were told, “Use it just like it’s yours,” so we did! We swam in the pool, ate the food in the refrigerator, used the bath towels and dishes, and even jumped on the beds in fun!

But we knew all along that it wasn’t really ours, so we took special care of everything. We enjoyed the benefits of using the home without owning it. We were responsible stewards of the gift we had been given.

Jesus often referred to life as a trust and told many stories to illustrate our responsibility toward God. In the story of the talents, a businessman evaluates each servant’s responsibility and rewards them accordingly. He says, “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!” (Matthew 25:21 NIV).

At the end of your life on earth, you will be evaluated and rewarded according to how well you handled what God entrusted to you. That means everything you do—even simple daily chores—has eternal implications. If you treat everything as a trust, God promises three rewards in eternity.

First, you will be given God’s affirmation: He will say, “Good job! Well done!” Next, you will receive a promotion and be given greater responsibility in eternity: “I will put you in charge of many things.” Then you will be honored with a celebration: “Come and share your Master’s happiness.”

There will be no greater joy, and it is available to every faithful steward of God’s gifts.

Puedes Contar con Dios

Puedes Contar con Dios

“Toda buena dádiva y todo don perfecto descienden de lo alto, donde está el Padre que creó las lumbreras celestes, y que no cambia como los astros ni se mueve como las sombras.” Santiago 1:17 (NVI)

Cuando todo está cambiando a tu alrededor, es importante recordar que Dios es un Padre consistente. Él nunca te abandonará. Puedes contar con Él. Él es confiable. Es digno de confianza.

Santiago 1:17 dice, “Toda buena dádiva y todo don perfecto descienden de lo alto, donde está el Padre que creó las lumbreras celestes, y que no cambia como los astros ni se mueve como las sombras.”  (NVI)

Los padres humanos a menudo son impredecibles. He hablado con personas que han dicho, “Mientras crecía, nunca supe cómo me iba a tratar mi padre. Nunca sabía si iba a estar callado o violento. Nunca supe si me iba a abrazar o a golpear. Nunca supe si me aceptaría o rechazaría”. Los padres inconsistentes producen hijos inseguros.

Pero Dios no es temperamental. Tu Padre celestial es consistente. Una de las cosas con las que puedes contar es que Dios siempre será el mismo contigo.

La Biblia dice en 2 Timoteo 2:13 “Si somos infieles, él permanece fiel, pues él no puede negar quién es.” (NTV).

Sabemos que el mundo está cambiando más rápidamente ahora. Alvin Toffler escribió un libro llamado “El choque futuro”, en el cuál él dijo que, en tiempos de cambios rápidos, las personas necesitan lo que él llama “islas de estabilidad”. Cuando todo está en el aire, necesitas algo en tu vida que nunca cambie como un ancla para tu alma. Necesitas una isla de estabilidad para manejar el estrés.

Sólo hay un problema: En este planeta, nada dura para siempre. Hay sólo una cosa en la que puedes contar y que nunca cambia: El amor cuidadoso y consistente de tu Padre Celestial.

“En su amor inagotable, mi Dios estará a mi lado” (Salmos 59:10ª NTV)

Puedes contar con ello.
