Simplify Your Life to Do God’s Work

“Anyone who lets himself be distracted from the work I plan for him is not fit for the Kingdom of God.”

Luke 9:62 (TLB)

Thousands of people have told me that, though they want to be used by God, they’re too busy. They’ve got their own agendas. They have their plans and dreams and ambitions, and they don’t have any time to give to God.

If you’re serious about being used by God, say, “Lord, what do I need to let go of? What do I need to cut out? What barriers are holding me back, keeping me from running the race you have planned for me?”

One of the biggest barriers is distractions. Jesus said in Luke 9:62, “Anyone who lets himself be distracted from the work I plan for him is not fit for the Kingdom of God” (TLB).

Here are a few of the many things that might be distracting you from your life mission:

The expectations of other people. You’ve got to decide who you’re going to please first in life. You can only have one “number one.”

Hobbies. There’s nothing wrong with having hobbies. But if they distract you from the most important things, then you need to let them go.

Your past. Maybe you haven’t let go of your past, and you’re holding on to guilt, resentment, or grief. Here’s the problem with that: When you’re stuck in the past, you can’t get on with the present—and you certainly can’t get on with God’s future for you. Your past is past. It’s over! So let it go.

What do you need to let go of? The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 10:23, “‘Everything is permissible,’ but not everything is helpful” (HCSB). What does that mean? Many things aren’t necessarily wrong; they’re just not necessary. Life is often a choice between “Am I going to do something good?” or “Am I going to do what’s best?”

If the devil can’t make you bad, he’ll make you busy. He’ll get you so busy that you don’t have time for the important things—ministry, mission, and time alone with God.

You can’t do it all. So do what matters most! Simplify your life and eliminate distractions so God can use you.

What are the most important things in your life?
Think of some of the good things that you’ve put first in your life. Have any of them distracted you from God’s best for your life?
Why do you think it’s so easy to be distracted by seemingly good things that are not God’s best?

Make God your “number one” today

Have you lived such a distracted life that you’ve never stopped to take care of the most important thing—your salvation? If you’re ready to set aside those distractions and live for Jesus, start by praying this:

“Dear God, I want to have a real, deep, and abiding faith in you and live for what matters. I confess that I have sinned and lived a life full of distractions. I need your forgiveness and mercy. Thank you for loving me so much that you sent Jesus to die for my sins, so that I can be forgiven.

“Jesus, you promised that anyone who believes in you will not perish but have everlasting life and eternity with you in heaven. I believe in you and accept you as my Lord and Savior. I want to follow you and spend the rest of my life serving you. Amen.”

¿Muy Ocupado para Jesús?

“María dio a luz a su primer hijo varón. Lo envolvió en tiras de tela y lo acostó en un pesebre, porque no había alojamiento disponible para ellos”. Lucas 2:7 (NTV)

Cuando nuestros hijos eran pequeños, mi esposa decidió que me tocaba elegir a mí dónde pasaríamos las vacaciones. Decidí que quería unas vacaciones totalmente espontáneas, sin ningún plan. Como pastor y líder, cada día de mi vida está planeado. Planear las vacaciones no me sonaba divertido.

Unas vacaciones totalmente espontáneas cuando tienes esposa e hijos no es una buena idea. Sin haber hecho planes las primeras cinco noches de esas vacaciones en cinco ciudades diferentes, dormimos en el auto cuatro de esas noches, porque no pudimos encontrar lugar en ningún hotel. Mis hijos no eran felices acampando. En la quinta noche decidimos planificar el resto de las vacaciones.

Esas vacaciones me ayudaron a comprender lo que significa cuando la Biblia cuenta la historia de la primera Navidad, que “no había alojamiento disponible” para María y José.

La venida del Dios eterno y el prometido Mesías había sido anticipada por miles de años. Las profecías anticipaban la verdad de que el Salvador del mundo vendría. Su nacimiento sería tan importante que dividiría la historia en a. C. y d. C. Tu nacimiento está determinado en relación con el nacimiento de Cristo.

Sin embargo, cuando el Hijo de Dios vino al mundo, no había habitación para Él. El dueño de la posada perdió una oportunidad increíble. Si Jesús hubiera nacido en una de sus habitaciones, el dueño podría haber puesto uno de esos carteles luminosos al estilo Las Vegas apuntando hacia abajo con la leyenda “El Hijo de Dios nació aquí”. Podría haber cobrado una fortuna por sus habitaciones. En lugar de eso, perdió la mayor bendición de su vida porque no tuvo lugar para Jesús.

No podemos ser muy crueles con el dueño de la posada, por no haber tenido una habitación para Jesús. Nosotros hacemos lo mismo todo el tiempo.

Nos resistimos darle a Jesús la importancia que se merece en nuestras vidas. Llenamos nuestra agenda con eventos que son poco importantes en comparación con Jesús. Gastamos nuestro dinero en la última tecnología y no tenemos nada para dar a la obra de Dios alrededor del mundo. Invertimos todo nuestro tiempo en avanzar en nuestras carreras y decimos que no tenemos tiempo para ayudar a otros en nuestra iglesia ni en nuestra comunidad.

Mientras te preparas para celebrar la Navidad este año, hazte esta pregunta: ¿Has dejado sitio en tu posada para Jesús?

How to Honor God with Your Body

“Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.”

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NLT)

Have you ever heard the word “sanctification”? It’s a word that means to dedicate something for God’s purpose. You can sanctify anything. You can say, “God, I sanctify this car; I dedicate it to you for your purposes. God, I sanctify this home; I dedicate it to you for your purposes.”

God also wants you to dedicate your body to him. The Bible says, “Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NLT).

How do you honor God with your body?

It’s simple: You take care of it.

“Sanctify your body” basically means “get in shape.” If you want God to use you, you’ve got to get in shape. Because the better shape you are in, the more energy you’ll have and the more God can use you.

Psalm 119:73 says, “You made my body, Lord; now give me sense to heed your laws” (TLB). God set up the principles of good health. He doesn’t just want you to have a pure heart. He wants your body to be in shape so he can use you more effectively.

Some of you aren’t getting enough sleep, and you need to get proper rest. Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is take a nap!

Some of you need to work on your food intake. In 1 Corinthians 6:13, the Bible compares overeating to sexual immorality: “It may be true that the body is only a temporary thing, but that’s no excuse for stuffing your body with food, or indulging it with sex. Since the Master honors you with a body, honor him with your body!” (The Message). You might not ever think of cheating on your husband or wife, but God says that, like sexual immorality, overeating is a sin against the body. God is serious about wanting you to control what you eat!

Some of you have the wrong attitude toward your body. You neglect it, you reject it (“God, I want a different one!”), or you try to perfect it (the way some body builders might worship their bodies). Instead, God wants you to respect your body and protect it. Why? Because God created it, Jesus paid for it, and the Holy Spirit lives in it.

So what’s your motivation to get in shape? The Bible says, “All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize” (1 Corinthians 9:25 NLT). Your motivation is to please God.

Athletes get in shape just to win an award. But you will have an eternal reward when you make the most of what you were given and take care of your body so that God can use you more effectively here on Earth.

Cinco Beneficios Cuando Aceptas el destino de Dios para tu Vida

“Entonces dijo María: «Mi alma glorifica al Señor, y mi espíritu se regocija en Dios mi Salvador…” Lucas 1:46-47 (NVI)

En Lucas 1:47-55, encontramos cinco razones, cinco beneficios cuando aceptamos el destino de Dios para nuestras vidas. María escribe un hermoso canto conocido como el “Canto de María”, cuando ella acepta el destino de Dios para su vida de ser la Madre de Jesús por obra del Espíritu Santo.

Aceptas el destino para tu vida, porque:

Dios te creó para Su propósito

“Entonces dijo María: «Mi alma glorifica al Señor, y mi espíritu se regocija en Dios mi Salvador…” Lucas 1:46-47 (NVI).

María está diciendo, “No voy a hacer esto a la fuerza, no haré esto quejándome, no lo haré porque tengo que hacerlo. Lo haré con entusiasmo, con alegría, este es mi propósito y lo haré con regocijo”.

Cuando se trata de planear la vida, muchos cristianos actúan como ateos. Aceptan a Dios para su salvación, pero luego dicen, “puedo planear mi vida, tal y como yo quiera”. ¿En serio? ¿Crees que Dios te puso aquí en la Tierra para que vivas para ti mismo? ¿Crees que Dios te puso en la Tierra sin un propósito? ¿Crees que Dios te puso en la Tierra para que desperdicies tu vida? No lo creo, no. Dios te hizo para Su propósito, y en quien mejor confiar tu destino, que en el que te creó y te hizo.

A nadie le interesa más que a Dios

“porque se ha dignado fijarse en su humilde sierva” Lucas 1:48a (NVI).

Dios es el único que siempre está pensando en ti, nunca te pierde de vista, has estado en su mente desde antes de la creación del mundo, estuviste en su mente cuando estaba clavado en la cruz, estás en su mente en este momento, Él siempre tiene su mirada fija en ti, nunca te olvida, nunca te desampara, siempre está contigo, a tu favor, vive en tu interior y siempre quiere lo mejor para tu vida.

Es la llave para la bendición

“…de ahora en adelante todas las generaciones me llamarán bendita. Pues el Poderoso es santo y ha hecho grandes cosas por mí. Él muestra misericordia de generación en generación a todos los que le temen” Lucas 1:48b-50 (NTV).

La llave para la bendición es seguir el destino que Dios tiene para tu vida. Dios nos bendice cuando hacemos las cosas para las que fuimos creados. María lo sabía, ella sabía que la llave para las bendiciones de Dios eran la fe y la obediencia.

Dios honra la humildad

“A príncipes derrocó de sus tronos y exaltó a los humildes” Lucas 1:52 (NTV).

Se requiere humildad para decir, “Dios, voy a seguir tu plan, no el mío”. Eso es humildad. El orgullo, la arrogancia, dicen, me olvido de Dios, tengo mis planes, mis sueños, mis ambiciones. La Biblia dice que Dios resiste a los orgullosos y da gracia a los humildes.

Dios cumple sus promesas

“Acudió en ayuda de su siervo Israel y, cumpliendo su promesa a nuestros padres, mostró su misericordia a Abraham y a su descendencia para siempre” Lucas 1:54-55 (NVI). 

Dios había prometido muchos años antes que el Mesías habría de venir, prometió a Abraham que de su descendencia vendría el Mesías y en Isaías 7:14, dice: “por eso, el señor mismo les dará una señal: la virgen concebirá y dará a luz un hijo, y lo llamará Emanuel” (NVI).

En la Biblia, Dios nos da más de 7000 promesas para nuestra vida, Él nunca ha fallado a sus promesas, y las tenemos por escrito.

You Don’t Have to Be Perfect to Be Used By God

“Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work."

2 Timothy 2:21 (ESV)

If you want to be used by God, you don’t have to be a perfect person—but you do need to purify your heart.

The Bible says in 2 Timothy 2:21, “Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work” (ESV).

God uses all kinds of people. He uses shy people and outgoing people. He uses people of different races, ages, stages of life, and backgrounds. He uses men and women. God will use plain vessels, and he’ll use ornate vessels. He’ll use big vessels and small vessels.

But there is one thing that God will not use: He will not use a dirty vessel. You have to be clean on the inside. But here’s the good news: No matter who you are or what you’ve done, you can be made clean.

How do you do that? How do you become pure? You do it through a simple word: confession. Augustine, a Christian leader who lived a few hundred years after Jesus, said, “The confession of bad works is the beginning of good works.” The Bible says in 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins to God, he will keep his promise and do what is right: he will forgive us our sins and purify us from all our wrongdoing” (GNT).

The word “confess” in Greek is the word homologeo. Homo means “same,” and logeo means “to speak.” So homologeo literally means “to speak the same” as God does about my sin. It means you agree with him: “God, you’re right. It wasn’t a mistake. It was a sin. It was wrong.” It doesn’t mean you bargain with God (“I’ll never do it again”). It doesn’t mean you bribe God (“I promise to read my Bible every day if you’ll forgive me”).

You just admit your sin.

That may seem too simple to you. You may say, “All I’ve got to do is admit it, and God will forgive me?” Yes! It’s called grace.

Here’s what you can do if you really want to be used by God: Take time this week to sit down with a notebook or journal and ask God, “What’s wrong in my life? Show me. I’m going to write it down, and I’m going to admit it. I’m going to confess it to you.” Then, when God gives you an idea, write it down.

The first time I did this, I thought I was going to write a book! And I’ve done this many times since. Make a list, and then write 1 John 1:9 over the list and say, “God, I admit these sins to you. These are wrong. I don’t want them in my life.” Ask God to cleanse your life. God will forgive you!

This is the starting point to being used by God. You must purify your heart.

There is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus

The Bible says in John 3:18, “Those who believe in the Son are not judged” (GNT). Romans 8:1 says it like this: “There is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus” (NLT).

If you’re ready to accept that promise, stop fearing God’s judgment, and commit your life to Jesus, then pray this prayer:

“Dear Jesus, you have promised that if I believe in you, everything I’ve ever done wrong will be forgiven, and I will learn the purpose of my life. Instead of judging me, you will accept me into your eternal home in heaven one day.

“I confess my sin, and I believe that you are God, my Savior. I receive you into my life as my Lord. Thank you that I don’t have to earn salvation, deserve it, or work for it. It is your gift of grace.

Today I’m turning over every part of my life to you. I want to use the rest of my life to serve you instead of serving myself. I humbly commit my life to you, and I ask you to save me and accept me into your family. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

¿Aceptarás el Destino de Dios para tu Vida?

“—Aquí tienes a la sierva del Señor —contestó María—. Que él haga conmigo como me has dicho”. Lucas 1:38 (NVI)

En la historia de Navidad tenemos varias personas que tuvieron un momento crucial, donde tomaron decisiones que cambiaron el resto de sus vidas. Una de estas personas es María, la madre de Jesús.

Lo que hacía a María especial, no era que fuera perfecta o que no pecara, sino que estuvo dispuesta a aceptar su destino, estuvo dispuesta a aceptar y confiar en Dios en las cosas a las que fue llamada.

La Biblia nos cuenta la historia de María en Lucas 1:30, el Ángel le dice a María, “—No tengas miedo, María; Dios te ha concedido su favor —le dijo el ángel—. Quedarás encinta y darás a luz un hijo, y le pondrás por nombre Jesús. Él será un gran hombre, y lo llamarán Hijo del Altísimo” Lucas 1:30-32 (NVI).

María era muy joven cuando el ángel se le apareció y le reveló el plan de Dios para su vida; embarazarse por obra del Espíritu Santo siendo virgen, para que de esta manera el Mesías viniera al mundo en forma humana beneficiando al resto de la humanidad.

María se encuentra en un momento decisivo, “¿aceptaré el destino de Dios para mi vida? ¿aun cuando no es lo más conveniente, aun cuando no sea socialmente aceptable, aun cuando no sea lo más cómodo, lo más lógico, lo más popular, aun cuando no sea lo que los demás esperan de mí, aun cuando pueda afectar mis relaciones?”. Seguramente todo esto cruzó por su mente, en el verso 38 ella le responde al Ángel, “—Aquí tienes a la sierva del Señor —contestó María—. Que él haga conmigo como me has dicho” Lucas 1:38 (NVI).

¿Por qué Dios eligió a María entre todas las mujeres? No fue por su educación; no tenía. No era por su fortuna; era una niña pobre. No era por su madurez; era una adolescente. ¿Por qué Dios eligió a María? Porque ella confió en Dios completamente, estaba dispuesta a aceptar el destino que Dios tenía para ella, aun cuando eso significara enfrentar una multitud de dificultades. A causa de esto fue usada por Dios para que Jesucristo naciera y así toda la humanidad tuviera a su alcance el perdón de pecados y la vida eterna.

La pregunta del día de hoy es: ¿aceptarás el destino que Dios tiene para tu vida? A veces no va a ser lo más popular, conveniente, lógico o cómodo, pero tendrá la mejor trascendencia para tu vida y muchas veces para aquellos que te rodean.

NUEVA SERIE HOY ¿Aceptarás el Destino de Dios para tu Vida?

Invest in Your Character, Not Your Comfort

“Grow in spiritual strength and become better acquainted with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."

2 Peter 3:18 (TLB)

God wants you to grow spiritually and become more like Jesus Christ. One way you can do that is by taking some of your money and investing it in your personal growth.

The Bible says in 2 Peter 3:18, “Grow in spiritual strength and become better acquainted with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (TLB). 

Your money can help you grow in spiritual strength. You can use it to develop skills, to educate yourself, to become a better leader, a better speaker, a better intercessor, or just a better person.

The truth is, you’re not taking your car to heaven with you. You’re not taking your condo, couch, or clothes to heaven either.

But you are taking your character. It may be tempting to use your money to invest in comfort, but God wants you to use your money to invest in something that’s going to heaven—your character.

That means any time you use your money to buy a Christian book that helps you grow, you’ve invested in what I call God’s “Growth Fund.” Any time you use some of your money to pay for a retreat or a conference that improves your life, you’ve invested in the Growth Fund. Any time you spend money on a class or seminar that helps make you more of who God wants you to be, God smiles and says that’s a good use of money.

I’ll never forget when I bought my first Bible. I was a teenager and thought, “This is the most important book to me, so I’m going to get the best one I can find.” I did a little research and found one I like called the Thompson Chain-Reference Bible. Then I said, “I want a binding that lasts, so I’m going to get it in the nicest leather I can find.” It cost me 60 dollars to buy that Bible—two months of my allowance. I gave up two months worth of snacks and movies, but I got a really cool Bible I could use for the rest of my life.

I still have that Bible. It’s my most treasured possession because I’ve read through it so many times. I have it underlined and marked up.

The Bible says, “Why spend your money on something that is not real food? . . . Listen closely to me, and you will eat what is good; your soul will enjoy the rich food that satisfies” (Isaiah 55:2 NCV).

You can spend your money on junk food or soul food. Choose to spend your money on food for your soul that helps you grow spiritually.

La Decisión más Importante de tu Vida

“Y el testimonio es éste: que Dios nos ha dado vida eterna, y esa vida está en su Hijo. El que tiene al Hijo, tiene la vida; el que no tiene al Hijo de Dios, no tiene la vida”. 1 Juan 5:11-12 (NVI)

Si hoy fueras a un centro comercial y le preguntaras a las personas, “¿Sabes a dónde irás, al Cielo o al Infierno?” probablemente oirías decir: “espero ir al Cielo”.

Pero “esperar únicamente” no basta. Oro que esta no sea tu propia respuesta. Tu destino eterno es demasiado importante como para no tener certeza.

Sólo un necio no se prepararía para lo que todos sabemos es inevitable: la muerte. Las estadísticas más recientes muestran que la tasa de mortalidad en el mundo alcanza, ¡el 100%!

No tienes garantizado el siguiente minuto en este planeta, mucho menos otra hora. No pospongas la decisión más importante de toda tu existencia.

La Biblia dice en 1 Juan 5:11-12, “Y el testimonio es éste: que Dios nos ha dado vida eterna, y esa vida está en su Hijo. El que tiene al Hijo, tiene la vida; el que no tiene al Hijo de Dios, no tiene la vida” (NVI).

Esto es más claro que el agua. Si tienes a Jesús, tienes la vida. Si no tienes a Jesús, no tienes la vida. Tú tienes que tomar una decisión.

No vas a ir al Cielo por la fe de otra persona. Jamás irás al Cielo por la decisión de otro.

¡Es tu decisión! Tú decides donde pasarás la eternidad.

Por esto la Navidad y la Pascua son tan importantes. Si Jesús no hubiera venido en Navidad y no hubiera muerto y resucitado en la Pascua, estaríamos sin esperanza. Nada de lo que hiciéramos tendría importancia. No tendrías decisión alguna que tomar.

La cruz es la respuesta a nuestro problema más profundo —la separación de Dios.

La Biblia dice: “Ustedes estaban muertos a causa de sus pecados y porque aún no les habían quitado la naturaleza pecaminosa. Entonces Dios les dio vida con Cristo al perdonar todos nuestros pecados. Él anuló el acta con los cargos que había contra nosotros y la eliminó clavándola en la cruz” Colosenses 2:13-14 (NTV).

Dios clavó en la cruz todo aquello que te separaba de Él. Pero no te va a forzar para que tomes la decisión más importante de tu vida. Está en tus manos.

Es tiempo de que te decidas.

Give to Encourage God’s Family

“Love one another with mutual affection."

Romans 12:10 (NRSV)

God wants you to learn to love him and invest in the lives of other people. When you give your money to God, it draws you closer to him. Then he wants you to learn to love and invest in his family. This is what I call the “Mutual Fund.”

The Bible says in Romans 12:10, “Love one another with mutual affection” (NRSV).

How do you invest in the Mutual Fund? By using some of your money to encourage fellowship, build relationships, and demonstrate love.

Why should you give to encourage fellowship? The Bible says, “This service you do not only helps the needs of God’s people, it also brings many more thanks to God. It is a proof of your faith. Many people will praise God because you obey the Good News of Christ—the gospel you say you believe—and because you freely share with them and with all others” (2 Corinthians 9:12-13 NCV).

How can your money build relationships in God’s family? Any time you give your money to someone, it draws you closer to that person. So when you invest financially in fellow believers, you grow closer to them. Any time you take a meal to somebody who’s sick, you’ve just invested in the Mutual Fund. When you contribute to a teen raising money for a school trip, you invest in the Mutual Fund. When you take a discouraged believer to lunch and offer a listening ear, you again have invested in the Mutual Fund.

Your money can also demonstrate love. You show love for God when you tithe to your church. But you can also give financially to other people. When you do, it’s an act of love—it’s like banking it in heaven. Any time you use your funds to show love to somebody else in the family of God, you’re investing in the Mutual Fund.

Remember, you can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.
