Cada Persona es Digna de Respeto

“Den a todos el debido respeto”. 1 Pedro 2:17a (NVI)

El respeto es un valor en peligro de extinción durante las últimas décadas. Vivimos en la “Edad de la irreverencia”, donde el sarcasmo domina el día y todos aman una buena humillación.

Aun así, la Biblia deja claro que las familias estables —y las sociedades estables— están construidas alrededor del respeto. La Biblia nos ordena honrar a nuestros padres, respetar la autoridad civil, y respetar a los líderes de la iglesia. Las esposas son llamadas a respetar a sus maridos en Efesios. En el libro de 1 de Pedro, los esposos son llamados a respetar a sus esposas. Para dejar claro que la Biblia no deja a nadie afuera, la Biblia también nos dice que “Den a todos el debido respeto” 1 Pedro 2:17a (NVI).

Todos, sin importar creencias o comportamientos, merecen respeto.

¿Por qué?

Dios creó a cada uno. Salmo 8:5 dice, “¡Sin embargo, lo has hecho un poco menor que los ángeles, y lo coronas de gloria y majestad!” (NBLA). Dios no crea basura. Nadie es inútil. Las personas toman malas decisiones todo el tiempo, pero siguen siendo valiosos para Dios. Aun la persona más desagradable en el mundo es amada por Dios. Jesús murió por todos. La Biblia dice, “Porque Dios los libró de ese modo de vida, … pagó con la sangre preciosa de Cristo” 1 Pedro 1:18-19 (TLA). Puede que no consideras a ciertas personas como valiosas, pero Dios sí. De hecho, Él dice que vale la pena morir por cada una de las personas que conoces. Demuestra que conoces a Dios. La Biblia nos dice que Dios es amor. Si conoces a Dios, estarás llenando tu vida con amor. La Biblia dice “El que no ama no conoce a Dios, porque Dios es amor” 1 Juan 4:8 (TLA). Recibirás lo que des. Es la ley de la cosecha. Lo que das recibes. Si quieres ser respetado, debes tratar a otras personas con respeto. La Biblia dice, “No se engañen: de Dios nadie se burla. Cada uno cosecha lo que siembra” Gálatas 6:7 (NVI).

Do Good to Those Who Oppose You

“Love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, offer the other cheek also. If someone demands your coat, offer your shirt also.”

Luke 6:27-29 (NLT)

When you’re persecuted, harassed, or facing opposition, you need to respond with a blessing.

Jesus says in Luke 6:27-29, “Love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, offer the other cheek also. If someone demands your coat, offer your shirt also” (NLT).

Who does that? Not many people, actually. But that kind of response is what sets Christians apart—because it’s not natural, popular, or easy.

It takes a lot of courage to do those things! Anyone can retaliate or say something mean. But it takes a lot of courage to respond with a blessing.

God wants you to love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who hurt you, and turn the other cheek. Is that easy? No. But it’s the most powerful form of witness—and you can do it only by being filled with God’s love.

The movie The Butler shows how the Freedom Riders, who fought racism in the South during the Civil Rights Movement, trained people how to not retaliate when they were hit, spit on, cursed, or pushed, or when people threw food at them. It’s an intensely powerful scene of taking a nonviolent stance.

As I watched that scene, tears started coming down my face. I thought, “I want to be that kind of person for Jesus. I want to be that brave. I want to have a heart of courage that won’t cave in to what’s wrong, no matter what they throw at me. And I want to respond with love.”

When you refuse to retaliate and instead respond in love at work or with somebody who doesn’t like you, God will be pleased. And you’re going to be blessed.

Jesus said, “God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven” (Matthew 5:10-12 NLT).

Jesus paid a price for you. And he says there’s a price to be paid for following him. When you’re a Christian, popularity on Earth is not a guarantee—but your reward in heaven is a guarantee.

Talk It Over

How do you respond to the idea of suffering for Jesus Christ? How does your answer affect the way you handle insults or disapproval?
Why is responding in love and not retaliation the most powerful form of witness for Christ?
How have you seen lives changed through loving enemies, praying for those who hurt others, and turning the other cheek?

Where will you spend eternity?

The Bible says you can only get to heaven by trusting in God through his Son, Jesus Christ. You cannot earn your way into heaven: “It is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV).

“Dear God, you have promised that if I believe in your Son, Jesus Christ, everything I’ve ever done wrong will be forgiven, I will learn the purpose of my life, and you will accept me into your eternal home in heaven one day.

"I confess I have sinned, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe that Jesus died to take away my sins and that you raised him to life. I want to trust Jesus as my Savior and follow him as Lord from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do your will. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen."

¿Qué Deberías Hacer en el Día de Reposo?

“Trabaja seis días, y haz en ellos todo lo que tengas que hacer, pero el día séptimo será un día de reposo para honrar al Señor tu Dios”. Éxodo 20:9-10a (NVI)

Todos debemos tomar una decisión consciente para dedicarnos a otras cosas que no sean el trabajo. Si no lo hacemos, nunca descansaremos. Tomo una decisión consciente sobre cuántas horas trabajaré cada semana, y me apego a eso. Animo a todos a hacer lo mismo. De lo contrario, rápidamente nos quemaremos.

Es como un arco y una flecha. Cuando un arco está constantemente tenso, pierde su poder. Tiene que ser desenrollado periódicamente. Debe forzarse a sí mismo a establecer horas realistas y luego hacerse responsable, y pedirle a alguien que lo controle durante el proceso.

Descansar adecuadamente no es psicología popular o solo un buen consejo. Es tan importante para el corazón de Dios que lo incluye en los Diez Mandamientos, junto con “No matar”, “No mentir” y “No robar”. “Tómate un día libre cada siete días”. La lista de los 10 mejores comportamientos morales de Dios. ¿No deberíamos hacerlo también en la nuestra?

La Biblia dice: “Trabaja seis días, y haz en ellos todo lo que tengas que hacer, pero el día séptimo será un día de reposo para honrar al SEÑOR tu Dios” Éxodo 20:9-10 (NVI). Llamamos a esto el sabbat, que simplemente significa un “día de reposo”. ¿Qué haces en tu día de reposo?

Descansa tu cuerpo. Si no te tomas un tiempo libre, tu cuerpo te hará tomar un descanso. Tu espalda se apagará. Te dará dolor de cabeza Te enfermarás con gripe. Dios no diseñó nuestros cuerpos para estar sin descansar. ¡Algunas veces lo más espiritual que puedes hacer en tu día de reposo es tomar una siesta!Recarga tus emociones. Todos hacen esto de manera diferente. Para algunos, la recarga ocurre a través de la tranquilidad. Otros se rejuvenecen a través de la recreación. Aún otros se rejuvenecen a través de las relaciones. Descubre lo que necesitas para recargar tus emociones y conviértelo en parte habitual de tu día de reposo.Reenfoca tu espíritu. Necesitas adorar en tu día de reposo. Tómate el tiempo para concentrarte en Dios en lugar de todos tus problemas. La adoración pone todo lo demás en perspectiva. Reduce tus problemas. Te recuerda que Dios todavía está en Su trono. Él te ayudará a superar las luchas que estés atravesando. De repente, el problema que te ha estresado durante toda la semana ya no será tan grande.

Todos necesitamos un día de reposo en nuestras vidas. No tiene que ser el domingo. Puede ser cualquier día de la semana, pero necesitas tomarte un día de descanso a la semana para descansar tu cuerpo, recargar tus emociones y volver a enfocar tu espíritu.

Who’s the Real Source of Opposition?

“Be humble when you correct people who oppose you . . . They have been trapped by the devil, and he makes them obey him, but God may help them escape.”

2 Timothy 2:25-26 (CEV)

When you face opposition because of your faith, you need to recognize its source.

It’s not other people. It’s not your coworkers. It’s not a political party. It’s not a competitor. The pressure you feel to cave in or be quiet or sit down when you should stand up—that pressure is not coming from other people. It’s really coming from Satan.

In Revelation 12:10 Satan is called “the accuser of our brothers and sisters” (NIV). In other words, he’s the accuser of the Christians. His number one job is to put you down.

There is an unseen spiritual battle going on all around you. This pressure to keep you from doing the right thing is not really coming from other people. They’re just weapons. Most of the time they don’t even know they’re being used. The real issue is spiritual warfare.

Ephesians 6:12 says, “We are not fighting against human beings but against the wicked spiritual forces in the heavenly world” (GNT).

Satan knows it’s ineffective to attack Jesus Christ directly, so instead he attacks Jesus’ followers. He uses the media, music, popular culture, and anything he can to ridicule those who belong to Jesus. He’s behind the voices saying, “Those Christians are out of date. They don’t know what they’re talking about. They’re bigots.”

Here’s what the Bible says you should do: “Stay away from stupid and senseless arguments. These only lead to trouble, and God’s servants must not be troublemakers. They must be kind to everyone, and they must be good teachers and very patient. Be humble when you correct people who oppose you . . . They have been trapped by the devil, and he makes them obey him, but God may help them escape” (2 Timothy 2:23-26 CEV).

If you don’t have the Holy Spirit in your life, then you have no defense against Satan. He can master your moods. He can cause you to be jealous. He can push you toward depression. He can make you angry.

You may think you’re strong, but you’re not strong enough to fight Satan’s attacks on your own. What you need to do is recognize the source—the Devil, not the person—and treat the opposition the way Jesus did.

How did Jesus treat those who opposed him? Even on the cross he said, “Father, forgive them. They don’t know what they’re doing” (Luke 23:34 GW).

The people who attack you don’t know what they’re doing. The people who put down Jesus and church and Christianity don’t know what they’re doing.

Just like Jesus, you need to pray, “Father, forgive them” so that you can show love even under attack. Then you’ll have more energy to fight the real enemy.

No Eres Dios — Para de Actuar Como Si lo Fueras

“Al necio le preocupa tanto el mínimo trabajo, que no tiene fuerzas para el asunto más sencillo”. Eclesiastés 10:15 (NVB)

Tú no eres Dios. No tienes todas las respuestas. No puedes hacer todo. Si estás luchando por encontrar el equilibrio en tu vida, esa admisión puede transformarlo todo.

La Biblia dice: “Al necio le preocupa tanto el mínimo trabajo, que no tiene fuerzas para el asunto más sencillo” Eclesiastés 10:15 (NVB).

Es tonto agotarse con el trabajo. Cuando trabajas demasiado, estás jugando a ser Dios. Estás diciendo que todo depende de ti, que el mundo se derrumbará si no lo mantienes girando. ¡Eso no es verdad! Tú no eres el gerente general del universo. Puedes renunciar. El universo no se derrumbará. Dios lo tiene todo bajo control.

A menudo, una de las razones por las que hacemos esto es que tratamos de complacer a todos. Aprende esta lección hoy: no puedes complacer a todos. ¡Incluso Dios no puede complacer a todos! Una persona quiere que llueva. Alguien más quiere que esté soleado. Solo un tonto intentaría hacer lo que incluso Dios no puede hacer.

Cuando vivimos para las expectativas de los demás, acumulamos toneladas de “deberes”. Nos decimos a nosotros mismos: “debería trabajar más horas”, “debería ir a este seminario” o “debería ofrecerme como voluntario para esta tarea”. Pero date cuenta de esto: nadie está apuntando con un arma a tu cabeza. El exceso de trabajo es tu elección. Eliges tomar el trabajo adicional o no tomarlo. Y eliges las consecuencias que vienen con esa elección.

Cuando niegas tu humanidad e intentas hacerlo todo, estás robando a Dios de su gloria. La Biblia nos lo recuerda en 2 Corintios 4:7: “Ahora tenemos esta luz que brilla en nuestro corazón, pero nosotros mismos somos como frágiles vasijas de barro que contienen este gran tesoro. Esto deja bien claro que nuestro gran poder proviene de Dios, no de nosotros mismos” (NTV). Pablo nos recuerda que somos seres humanos. Somos débiles y frágiles. Las jarras de barro se rompen fácilmente. Si los sueltas, se rompen. Los recipientes de arcilla deben manipularse adecuadamente y con cuidado. Si no, serán destruidos.

Pero la buena noticia es que, a través de nuestra debilidad, el poder y la gloria de Dios resplandecen. Tu humanidad no es algo para esconder. En cambio, celebremos el poder de Dios trabajando a través de nuestras limitaciones.

Entonces admítelo: eres humano. ¡Gracias a Dios por eso!

You Only Need God’s Approval

“It is no shame to suffer for being a Christian. Praise God for the privilege of being called by his name!”

1 Peter 4:16 (NLT)

When you stand for the truth and do what’s right, there’s no need to be ashamed or embarrassed. The Bible says in 1 Peter 4:16, “It is no shame to suffer for being a Christian. Praise God for the privilege of being called by his name!” (NLT)

Let me ask you: Is an insult going to kill you? No. Is a putdown going to kill you? No. Is somebody calling you a name or labeling you because you’ve made a stand for Christ going to hurt you? No. Is some troll online who’s trying to bait you and get you into an argument going to take you down? No. None of these things will kill you. In fact, none of these things have to make any real impact on your life at all.

It’s vital that you understand this truth that will liberate your life: You don’t need other people’s approval to be happy.

You may have been trying to fit in with a certain group or get the approval of a certain person for many years. I hate to tell you, but if you haven’t gotten it by now, you’re not going to get it. The good news is you don’t need it! You don’t need anybody’s approval in order to be happy.

No matter what you do in life, somebody’s not going to like it. You can’t avoid disapproval. So if you’re going to have people’s disapproval either way, you may as well have their disapproval for doing the right thing rather than the wrong thing.

As you face opposition, remember this: If other people’s opinions matter more to you than God’s opinion, then you’re going to crumble when those people attack you because of your faith in Jesus. But if you focus on God and what you know is right, then you can make a firm stand.

Be encouraged by these words: “Stand firm against [Satan], and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are” (1 Peter 5:9 NLT).

La Clave Para Una Vida Equilibrada: Jesús

“Busquen el reino de Dios por encima de todo lo demás y lleven una vida justa, y él les dará todo lo que necesiten”. Mateo 6:33 (NTV)

Si quieres vivir una vida verdaderamente equilibrada, solo puedes mirar a una persona en toda la historia como modelo: Jesús. Si lo pones en el centro de tu vida, tu vida estará más equilibrada.

Piensa en tu vida como una rueda. El centro de la rueda es un centro. Todos los rayos de tu vida (que representan tus relaciones, tu familia, tu carrera, tus metas, etc.) provienen de ese centro. Todos construimos nuestras vidas alrededor de algún tipo de centro. La pregunta es, ¿cuál será tu centro? ¿Será tu familia? ¿Será tu carrera? ¿Será el dinero?

¿O será Jesús?

¿Cómo sabes en lo que estás construyendo tu vida? Eche un vistazo a lo que más le importa. Eso es lo que te está impulsando.

El centro de tu vida es fundamental para desarrollar una vida equilibrada. Un centro sólido conduce a una vida sólida. Un centro débil y endeble conduce a una vida débil. Cuando escucho que la gente me dice que sus vidas se están deshaciendo, generalmente significa una cosa: tienen un centro defectuoso. Algo más que Dios, ha tomado prioridad en sus vidas.

El eje no solo crea estabilidad, sino que también controla e influye en todo lo demás sobre tu vida. Lo que pongas en el centro de tu vida también será tu fuente de poder. El poder de una rueda siempre emana del centro hacia afuera, nunca al revés.

Haz de Jesús el centro de tu vida y te proporcionará la estabilidad, el control y el poder que necesitas para tu vida. La Biblia dice: “Busquen el reino de Dios por encima de todo lo demás y lleven una vida justa, y él les dará todo lo que necesiten” Mateo 6:33 (NTV).

No te preocupes por hacer que Jesús sea el primero en tu vida. Ponlo en el centro de tu vida. Déjalo dirigir tu vida, influenciarla, potenciarla y darle estabilidad.

Haz eso y todas las otras áreas de tu vida, desde tu familia hasta tu carrera profesional hasta tus objetivos, encontrarán equilibrio en Jesús.

Work for Reconciliation, Not Resolution

“[God] has restored our relationship with him through Christ, and has given us this ministry of restoring relationships. In other words, God was using Christ to restore his relationship with humanity. He didn’t hold people’s faults against them, and he has given us this message of restored relationships to tell others.”

2 Corinthians 5:18-19 (GW)

When you want to repair a relationship where there is conflict, you have to focus on reconciliation, not resolution.

And there’s a big difference between the two. 

Reconciliation means reestablishing the relationship. It doesn’t mean you’ll remarry your ex; it just means you’re at peace with each other.

Resolution means you resolve every disagreement—and that just isn’t going to happen. The truth is, there are some things in your marriage, your friendships, and your work relationships that you’re just never going to agree on—because we’re all different. But you can disagree without being disagreeable. That’s called maturity. That’s called wisdom. That’s called being like Christ.

We can have unity without uniformity. We can walk hand in hand together without seeing eye to eye. My wife, Kay, and I have been married for more than 40 years, and we don’t see eye to eye on a lot of things. But we walk hand in hand and support each other. We are at peace.

Here’s what I’ve learned from counseling married couples: If you focus on restoring your relationship, oftentimes the issue becomes insignificant. How many of your biggest arguments were over the smallest things? We fight about so many little things, but, in reality, the fights aren’t even about those things—they’re about bigger issues. Instead of trying to agree on every little issue, you need to get back to focusing on the relationship.

There’s a lot of conflict in the world. Earth is filled with wars, division, arguments, prejudice, racism, terrorism, and partisanism. And as a result, we have broken relationships. We have broken economies, broken governments, and broken marriages. And we have broken lives and broken hearts.

I challenge you as a believer to commit to becoming an agent of reconciliation in a world filled with conflict. Look for ways to bring people together rather than tear them apart.

The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5:18-19, “[God] has restored our relationship with him through Christ, and has given us this ministry of restoring relationships. In other words, God was using Christ to restore his relationship with humanity. He didn’t hold people’s faults against them, and he has given us this message of restored relationships to tell others” (GW).

If you are a follower of Jesus Christ, you have a ministry of reconciliation. It’s your job to go out in society and say, “God’s done everything to put you back in fellowship with him. He’s already paid for all your sins. You don’t have to be his enemy. He’s not mad at you. He’s mad about you. Be reconciled to God. Be at peace with God. Then spread that peace to everybody else.”

Tu Trabajo y tus Valores son dos Cosas Diferentes

Podemos tener muchas excusas para el exceso de trabajo. Algunas veces decimos que es para proveer a nuestra familia. Otras veces insistimos que nuestro trabajo es tan importante que reducirlo sería irresponsable.

Pero usualmente, es un problema de valores. Comenzamos a valorar las cosas equivocadas. Específicamente, valoramos la adquisición de cosas por encima de todo.

La Biblia dice, “Luego observé que a la mayoría de la gente le interesa alcanzar el éxito porque envidia a sus vecinos; pero eso tampoco tiene sentido, es como perseguir el viento” Eclesiastés 4:4 a (NTV).

Dios dice que tenemos dos opciones: Podemos gastar nuestro tiempo en mantenernos al día con los vecinos, o podemos olvidarlos y reducir nuestro nivel de estrés. Pero no podemos hacer ambas cosas.

Así es como se trata de una cuestión de valores. ¿Quieres más cosas, o quieres menos estrés y más tiempo con tu familia? La elección es tuya.

Jesús lo dijo de esta manera: “¿De qué sirve ganar el mundo entero si se pierde la vida?” Marcos 8:36 (NVI). Para ponerlo en lenguaje moderno, “¿Qué bien recibe un hombre al convertirse en presidente de su compañía, pero pierde a sus hijos o su esposa?”.

¿La respuesta simple? Nada Bueno.

Tu trabajo y tu valor son dos cosas diferentes. Muchos de nosotros crecimos escuchando que no valíamos, y estás en tu lugar de trabajo intentando probar que todos los demás están equivocados. Y estás pensando, “Voy a demostrarles. Voy a probar que están equivocados”. Tu trabajas cada vez más duro, pero no importa qué tan duro trabajes, nunca es suficiente. Sólo cuando comienzas a relajarte, escuchas una voz inquietante: “Sigue pedaleando, nos están alcanzando”. Necesitas deshacerte de esa voz. Te está mintiendo.

Como pastor, he estado al lado de muchas personas en el momento de su muerte. He visto muchas personas tomar su último aliento, algunas veces en un hospital, algunas veces en una casa, y algunas veces en la escena de un accidente. Entre todas esas personas que he visto morir en mi vida, nunca he escuchado a alguien decir con su último aliento, “Desearía haber estado más tiempo en la oficina”.

Nadie.

When Opposed, Choose Worship Over Worry

“If you suffer for doing what is right, God will reward you for it. So don’t worry or be afraid of their threats. Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it.”

1 Peter 3:14-15 (NLT)

Christianity is not for weaklings, wimps, or the faint of heart. It takes courageous men and women to follow Jesus.

What is it costing you to follow Christ? Unlike many believers around the world, you may not live in an area where you face violent oppression. But you likely deal with silent repression every single day as most cultures are becoming more and more secularized and anti-Christian. 

No matter where you’re from, when you’re faced with opposition because of your faith, it’s natural to feel afraid. So how do you get rid of the fear of opposition? How do you get rid of the fear of disapproval? How do you get rid of the fear of being rejected?

You need to be filled with God’s love. The Bible says, “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear” (1 John 4:18 ESV). When you face opposition, choose to focus on God’s love for you. People who rest in the assurance of God’s love don’t fear rejection or disapproval.

The Bible says in 1 Peter 3:14-15, “If you suffer for doing what is right, God will reward you for it. So don’t worry or be afraid of their threats. Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it” (NLT).

When you feel pressured to be quiet about your faith, you have a choice: You can worry, or you can worship. That means either you panic or you pray; you focus on the problem, pressure, and persecution, or you focus on God.

When you’re opposed because of your faith, you’re going to feel pressure. But choose to turn away from the pressure you feel and put your focus on God. In other words, choose to worship—because focusing on God is essentially worship. 

Next time you face opposition for your faith, choose to worship instead of worry.
