“Heads up!”
Just as I turned, a sudden, powerful force slammed into me, taking me down, and I hit the ground with enough vigor to make the breathwhoosh out of my lungs. The box flew out of my arms, and I was a little stunned at first, lying in the grass. It wasn’t an unfamiliar feeling; I’d been thrown from so many horses over the years, I’d lost count. And this is what being thrown felt like. Maybe worse. My hat had shifted and now shaded my eyes. I concentrated on breathing.
Then, suddenly, my hat was pushed off my face, and he was over me. Arms braced on either side of my head. Looking down. Frozen in place, I couldn’t do anything else except stare back at him, and I watched his smile fade as his gaze fixed on mine. He looked about as surprised as I felt.
His face took me off guard. It was … shocking. Not handsome—almost frightening. Rough. The lightest, most startling blue eyes I’d ever seen stared down at me. One of them had a really recent black and blue shiner marring the otherwise fair skin. A whitish half-moon scar started at the corner of the other eye and curved around his cheek bone. Another white scar jagged down from his jaw, just below his ear, halfway down his throat; it was met by a black tattooed inscription that disappeared down his shirt. Super dark hair—almost black—swung over his forehead, and equally dark brows furrowed. We both stared for a few seconds.
Then, his head lowered, and full, firm lips covered mine.
And he kissed me.
One, two, three seconds passed as my brain reclined in some hazy fog where I didn’t know anything or anyone. Only this kiss. Strong lips pushed mine open, just a bit, and a velvety tongue barely swept against mine. A faint trace of spearmint lingered. For an instant, I was completely lost.
Then, the shock wore off, and my brain worked again. Almost too well. Between reality and old panic clawing at me, I reacted.
I reared my knee up and sunk it straight into his family jewels. “Get off me,” I said in a low firm voice. I put my palms against his chest and shoved him.
“Ah, damn!” the guy wheezed. He grabbed his crotch and fell over onto his side. He groaned in pain. I leapt up, stepped over him, and started grabbing my books.
“Jesus fuck, Sunshine.” The guy laughed and wheezed at the same time, and still clutched himself. “What’d you do that for?”
His voice wasn’t too deep and sort of raspy. Heavy accent. He looked like a gangster, only he wore a WU Silverbacks tee shirt, with the number 14 at the upper left chest. Whah’d you do that fah? Definitely not from Texas. He’d kissed me. And for a moment, I’d let him. What was wrong with me? I spared him a harsh glare.
“Are you crazy? Why do you think?”
Male voices caught my attention, and I looked over to my left. A group of guys—jocks, all wearing Silverbacks tees—were laughing. One was on the ground, howling like a total fool.

I fell in love with the characters in this story, especially Nana Pearl! Being from the south, I could relate to so much of this story (especially the language), and I loved that I was familiar with a lot of the places. Secrets Behind Those Eyes is a great, quick read, and a feel good story with just enough drama thrown in to keep in interesting. I love how Scarlet makes Ryder want to be a better guy, and I can’t wait to see where life takes them. Although I am very curious about Gable and Ivie…looking forward to their story next!

Not long after the guys go outside Anna and Gabby show up. Daria pulls them over to the kitchen window to look at Ryder. Anna pipes up. “Ooh he’s hot.”
Daria laughs. “You should have saw him when he came to the door. He was like half unsure of his self, half pissed off. It was sexy. But I think when Cade’s big ass answered the door he about pissed his pants.”
I laugh. “Well we had a little issue and I didn’t think to let him know I’d left town, plus all the stuff with my phone he couldn’t get a hold of me. He panicked a little and called Gable to find me.”
Gabby laughs. “Oh so he went all caveman on your ass.”
I laugh. “I guess so. But he did admit to sitting in the barn and getting drunk with my calf. Even though it’s not my calf it’s his I just named him.”
“So how did you guys meet?” Anna asks.
“During community service.”
Anna laughs. “Oh yeah the ex’s car. I have to say you might be Cade’s little sister and not mine but I was very proud of you that day. It was like something Gabby would’ve done.”
“Anyway. He hit on me I shot him down. Like shot him down bad. He kept kind of stalking me until I said yes to a date. He took me on an awesome first date and I guess according to him now we are boyfriend and girlfriend.”
They all laugh and Daria speaks up. “Caveman style. Honey go ahead and figure you are going to marry that man. Only two people who love each other can act that crazy to one another and that guy is over the moon for you.”

First off, if you haven’t read the novella Guarded, do it! What are you waiting for? In Guarded, we meet Vanessa & Jackson, and also their friends and exes, and Defensive picks up where Guarded left off. Vanessa still finds it hard to believe that the hot new star player for the Oklahoma City Thunder basketball team, Jackson Berrios, chose her for his girlfriend. He could literally have any girl he wanted, but he chose her, and she couldn’t be more thankful. She’s still getting used to being in the spotlight, and with the whispers constantly surrounding her, she has trouble trusting that he actually loves her and will not leave her.
Throw in some MAJOR shockers from people in both Jackson and Vanessa’s pasts, and it seems the relationship may be doomed before it ever gets a good start. And just when you think it may be possible to handle one situation, another bombshell is dropped. When history starts to repeat itself for Vanessa, will she push Jackson away to guard her heart? Can Jackson convince her to let her defenses down and see that he truly loves her? Vanessa thinks she will never be able to give Jackson what he wants, can the couple really have their happily ever after?
Defensive is a beautiful story of love and acceptance, family and protection, forgiveness and moving forward, and I really enjoyed the journey of Jackson and Vanessa. There were bumps along the way, but what relationship doesn’t have those? I’m also glad Shane got a little redemption for himself – I still don’t like him, but at least now we sort of know why he was the way he was. I really hope we get Amanda and Landon’s story (Vanessa’s BFF and brother), I’m routing for them!

Casey’s Thoughts
I feel in love with Jackson Berrios in Guarded, but what’s not to love about a hot, perfectly chiseled body of an OCK Thunder basketball player? Oh, I might add that he is a really good guy as well… or at least tries to be. :)
One thing I might need to add is that you defiantly need to read Guarded first. In fact, that’s what made me fall for all of these characters, and have a strong dislike for Shane. In Guarded, we are hit with a major bombshell from the get go. I just knew this was going to tear Vanessa and Jackson apart.
Vanessa is as stubborn as they come. She has a major bombshell herself and chooses to keep quiet because she believe that is what’s best for Jackson. Truth be told, it only makes it harder on all of them.
Defensive was the perfect novel to follow up Guarded. I love how each of the characters are real, what you see is what you get, and had me questioning other people’s motives.
In Defensive, you will fall in love with Amanda. She honestly is my favorite. Even over smoking’ hot Jackson! She’s spunky, a true bff, and keeps it real with Vanessa. You will also get to know Shane. He’s not my favorite, and I just kept waiting to see if their was something he wasn’t telling. Jackson and I both have mutual feelings for him. He did keep this story interesting to say the least.

Just when I thought I was going to be having a boring Friday night…
I figured I’d be sitting at home or hitting up some local bar, but my buddy Judd just got stationed down at Ft. Stewart and he got a pass for the night. We’re going to hit up some little bars down in Richmond Hill. It’ll be good to have a few beers with him. I think he’s going to be deployed soon and he’s like a brother to me. Good thing we both had some great fake IDs made two years ago.
When we pull my Jeep Wrangler into the parking lot of the Swampy Tonk, I can tell tonight is going is going to be interesting. I look two spots over and see the bright red Camaro that picked up Scarlet today. Hmm, so this is where they started their night off.
We walk into to the bar and I see her across the room, dancing with her friend. “Judd, I may need you to keep that little raven haired beauty on the dance floor busy tonight.”
“Damn, bro, I don’t think that’ll be a problem for me.”
A nice slow song pipes up just in time for Judd to make his way over to Scarlet’s friend and ask her to dance. Scarlet make her way to the bar and so do I.
“Can I buy you a drink?”
While turning her head, she smiles. “Sure.” Until she sees that it’s me offering. “Ugh, damn, just my luck. No, I’ll get my own drink, thanks.”
“I just want to buy you a drink to say sorry.”
“Fine.”
I motion for the bartender to give her another and I get a beer for myself. “Didn’t think I would run into anyone I knew down here.”
“We came here to get away from the locals and celebrate my birthday.” She has a cute little slur going on.
“So it’s your birthday?” I ask.
“No, it was a few weeks ago, but I’ve been kinda busy.”
“Wow, well, I’ll buy you another drink for your birthday then.”
“No thanks. We also came down here for the cute military guys. See? My friend’s already found one.”
I laugh. “That’s my best friend, Judd. He’s who I came here with tonight.”
“Great,” she says.

There was a pause, and though they were three thousand miles apart, the silence was heady. He was in a drugged-out state tonight. “What will you do?”
“I suspect I will fall fast asleep and dream of a beautiful redhead on the other side of the country.”
“She would like that dream very much,” she said in a sweet voice, the kind that worked its way beneath all the hard edges in him, and settled deep in his heart. “Will I talk to you again soon?”
He took a fueling breath, and put his armor back on, steeling himself. “I don’t know the answer to that.”

Not long after the guys go outside Anna and Gabby show up. Daria pulls them over to the kitchen window to look at Ryder. Anna pipes up. “Ooh he’s hot.”
Daria laughs. “You should have saw him when he came to the door. He was like half unsure of his self, half pissed off. It was sexy. But I think when Cade’s big ass answered the door he about pissed his pants.”
I laugh. “Well we had a little issue and I didn’t think to let him know I’d left town, plus all the stuff with my phone he couldn’t get a hold of me. He panicked a little and called Gable to find me.”
Gabby laughs. “Oh so he went all caveman on your ass.”
I laugh. “I guess so. But he did admit to sitting in the barn and getting drunk with my calf. Even though it’s not my calf it’s his I just named him.”
“So how did you guys meet?” Anna asks.
“During community service.”
Anna laughs. “Oh yeah the ex’s car. I have to say you might be Cade’s little sister and not mine but I was very proud of you that day. It was like something Gabby would’ve done.”
“Anyway. He hit on me I shot him down. Like shot him down bad. He kept kind of stalking me until I said yes to a date. He took me on an awesome first date and I guess according to him now we are boyfriend and girlfriend.”
They all laugh and Daria speaks up. “Caveman style. Honey go ahead and figure you are going to marry that man. Only two people who love each other can act that crazy to one another and that guy is over the moon for you.”
