EXCERPT:

KINDNESS --

If I were to ask you to rate your kindness meter on a scale of one to ten, where would you put yourself? I think most of us would determine that we probably fall in the upper mid-range. Statements like, “I’m a fairly kind person,” or “I demonstrate kindness most of the time,” seem to ring true for me. Maybe a seven or eight on the scale, certainly no lower than a six if we call ourselves Christians, right?

If we were graded on a curve, these scores would seem to suffice. But this is not a curve-based system; we are called to do better than that. I am not advocating a performance-based belief system whereby we should be kind to gain points or favor from our God. No. God’s grace through Jesus’ sacrifice is sufficient. What I’m getting at is that our response to that grace should be flowering fruit that demonstrates who we are in Christ.

Regardless of the rating you gave yourself in the exercise above, there is room for growth. Let’s make kindness a priority. Think of ways that you can demonstrate kindness to those around you, both big and small. Exercise that muscle in your life and let’s create a culture where our fruit can ripen.

MY REVIEW:

It has been several decades since I was in the targeted age group for this devotional. As an adult, I have worked with junior high/middle school and high school students as a youth group leader, Sunday School teacher, supervisor of high school aides in my classroom, and as an paraprofessional at a high school. As an adult who is interested in the spiritual, mental, and emotional development for this age group, I jumped at the chance to review this book.  I was not disappointed!

This book is beautifully-packaged and will appeal to male and female readers with its black and blue type and unadorned pages of devotions.  Each devotion includes a short title, a Bible verse, message of several paragraphs from the author, and a two to four sentence prayer which applies to the Bible verse and the lesson for the devotion.
Many of the devotions regard peer pressure. Specifically, the negativity that one must navigate through on social media. Even though I did not grow up with social media when I was this age, I can see the pitfalls of this method of communicating.  The author encourages readers to not compare themselves to others in the areas of appearance, wealth, etc. She reassures them that God created them in His image with a plan for their lives. Then she provides examples of how readers can accomplish these goals by focusing instead on God and His purpose and path for their lives. The author's feeling tone is warm, welcoming, positive, supportive, and encouraging. I believe young readers will respond positively to her youthful writing style.
If I could sum up the message of this book as I see it, I would quote the final sentence from Devotion 25, 'Cool and Confident':  "Be cool and confident in who God has created you to be, and live the life God has called you to live."  Sadie Robertson Huff, author, page 55   I highly recommend this book for readers ages 13 to 16, families, church libraries, Sunday School/youth group leaders, and for older adults who want to get in touch with their younger selves.   I received a copy of this book from the publisher through JustRead Publicity Tours. All of my opinions and thoughts shared here are solely my own.

~ FRIDAY FICTION FEATURE UNLIKELY YARN DRAGON LADY ~

🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶 ~ FRIDAY FICTION FEATURE ~ -- BLOG TOUR STOP FOR:   'THE UNLIKELY YARN OF THE DRAGON LADY'  --  AUTHOR SHARON J. MONDRAGON~Post Includes:  Book Spotlight,Author Bio, Review & Giveaway~
🧶 🧶 🧶 🧶 🧶 🧶 🧶 🧶 🧶 🧶  🧶 ABOUT THE BOOK:

A knitting group’s change of scenery changes lives in unexpected ways

Margaret, Rose, Jane, and Fran had a good thing going: meet every week in the quiet of their peaceful chapel and knit prayer shawls. No muss, just ministry. That is, until their pastor boots them out of the church in his last-ditch effort to revive the dwindling congregation.

Uptight Margaret isn’t having it. Knitting prayer shawls where people can watch is the most ridiculous idea she’s ever heard of, and she’s heard plenty. Prayer belongs in the church, not out among the heathen masses. How are they supposed to knit holiness into these shawls if they’re constantly distracted by the public? But with no choice, the others embrace the challenge. They pack their knitting bags and drag Margaret—grumblingthe whole way—tothe mall with them. She can’t wait to prove them all wrong when it fails miserably, and show the pastor that she always knows best.

Without the familiar mold the group has been stuck in, their own losses, pain, and struggles rise to the surface. And the people and situations they encounter every time they try to sit quietly and knit are taking them a lot further out of their comfort zone than they ever imagined. Can they find the courage to tackle the increasing number of knotty issues they learn about in the community--or will the tangle be too much to unravel?

Sharon J. Mondragon’s debut is warm and delightful, full of real laughter, grief, and personality. It beautifully illustrates the power of women across generations to reach people for Christ.

🧶 ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Sharon J. Mondragón writes about the place where kindness and courage meet. Her debut novel, The Unlikely Yarn of the Dragon Lady (originally titled The Heavenly Hugs Prayer Shawl Ministry) was the 2017 winner of the American Christian Fiction Writers Genesis award in the Short Novel Category, and she has also been recognized by The Saturday Evening Post where her short story, “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” was an Honorable Mention Awardee in the 2014 their Great American Fiction Contest.

Mondragón has been active in prayer shawl ministry since 2008 and currently serves as facilitator for the prayer shawl ministry at her church, St. Paul Episcopal in Waxahachie, TX. She also knits with the Circle of Healing at Red Oak United Methodist Church. She is a Level 2 Certified Knitting Instructor through the Craft Yarn Council and teaches beginning knitting at a local yarn store.

Mondragón is the mother of five grown children and has four grandchildren. After 26 years as an Army wife, she has settled in Midlothian, TX with her hero/husband, her laptop, and her yarn stash.

 🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶

🧶  REVIEW:

This is a unique story about a small group of women from the Hope of Glory Community Church who have knitted and prayed together for seven years as a valuable ministry of their church. The women knit prayer shawls for those in need of comfort who may be ill or grieving or in need of a spiritual boost. {As a bonus, readers will find the knitting pattern in the back matter of the book for one of the shawls featured in the story.} The knitters are very different in their personalities and personal lives, but they are committed to their ministry and work diligently to fill a need in their church community. Three of the women are middle-aged, and one of the members is an octogenarian. As readers move through the story, they learn of the heartache, loss, disappointments, regrets, and mistakes each of the members--Jane, Rose, Fran, and Margaret--has had on her journey through life. During the group's outreach efforts, each woman comes to learn more about herself and God's plan(s) for her life. One of the elements of the story I enjoyed most was the personal growth each of these characters made during the story.  The prayer shawl ministry changes and expands as the church's need to grow its membership becomes vital to the aging church's survival. The high-spirited and effervescent leader of the church, Rector Pete McIlhaney, became one of my favorite characters in this tale because of the leadership and positivity he exhibited in the church's time of need. He just never gave up! There is some wonderful humor associated with this character, too.
As the prayer shawl ministry opens its arms to outsiders, readers are graced with some beautiful younger women who add life and energy to the group. In my opinion, these young women are essential to the plot because of their enthusiasm and their desire to learn and grow as knitters and as women. This book is completely clean in language and content.
I received a paperback copy of this book from the publisher throughAudra Jennings PR. My opinions and thoughts shared here are solely my own.

An amateur sleuth named Bonnie and her kitty companion Clyde, with names like those, what could possibly go wrong?

Life hasn't sparkled too brightly for Bonnie Balfour over the past few years, but a heart-breaking divorce has brought her back to her small rural hometown of Bliss, Georgia, and things are starting to shape up.

The proud new owner of Bless Her Heart—a second chance dress shop and boutique on the town square—Bonnie thinks thirty-eight might not be too late for a fresh start in life after all.

Until a grouchy old widow turns up dead in a pile of donations meant for Bonnie’s shop, and the town’s new detective pins her to the top of his suspect list!

To save her shop, dream and reputation, Bonnie must coordinate clues and stitch together the truth about her innocence, but the unreasonably handsome detective and prying eyes of the local gossip mill are fast fraying her nerves.

When a series of anonymous attacks begin to hem her in, Bonnie fears the real killer is fixing to make her his next victim. Can this amateur sleuth measure up?

Cozy Mystery Tropes Are the BEST Tropes

Did you know there was a word for the most popular themes and story elements used in a genre? The word is trope, and it’s often associated with romance, but it’s present in everything we read or watch in movies and on T.V.. We’re drawn to specific genres for different reasons, often associated with the most popular tropes and how those make us feel. We get extra excited when we discover new materials with those beloved situations or dynamics inside.

Personally, there’s nothing I love more than a well-constructed mystery, except maybe a well-constructed mystery with all my favorite story elements. Some popular tropes for romance readers might include a heroine with amnesia or a prince’s surprise baby, a story where enemies become lovers or a couple is unfortunately snowed-in with only one bed until help arrives. My cozy mystery reading preferences are significantly different, and wholly less dramatic, but it’s important to know what you like.

Writing my new Bonnie and Clyde Mysteries series was an absolute ton of fun for me, because I included all my most favorite tropes in every story. Beginning with BURDEN OF POOF, readers can expect a heaping helping of small town hijinks and deep south charm, two of my top-tier faves. There’s just something so indescribably freeing and hopeful about new beginnings, and new series are no different. I’ve done my very best to infuse these books with all the most cozy goodness.

Here’s a list of five things I promise you’ll find in each and every one of Bonnie and Clyde’s adventures:

A quirky and loveable small town community. From her parents, Bud & Blossom, and their wonderfully adorable flower farm, to What the Dickens bookstore, possibly haunted by folks who missed the light because they needed to finish their chapter, to an earthy, greenhouse owner who talks to the plants, Bliss, Georgia has all the most charming, engaging secondary characters a good cozy series needs and more.

An adorable and mischievous kitty companion, because every amateur sleuth needs someone to help plot their next move.

Food! What decent southern community isn’t going to show up with some spoonbread and a few casseroles when a neighbor’s being threatened by a killer?

A worthy hero for my heroine. Yeah, I know, I might lose a few readers here, but I am a romantic at heart, and when I can arrange for my heroine to meet the man who will become her person, help them build a friendship as strong as their attraction and establish something real on that foundation, I am HERE for it. Hopefully, you will be too.

Laughs! Mysteries are a ton of fun, but murder is decidedly not. Even if we smarties like the excitement of catching clues and solving a good puzzle, death is a tough topic. So, I apply plenty of humor to soften the heavy blows of grief and despair on the page. Thankfully, amateur sleuths make my job easy, because who among us wouldn’t bumble a bit while becoming a first-time self-taught murder investigator? I can guarantee you, I would be a complete mess.

If you enjoy a cozy mystery with these tropes and qualities, I hope you’ll give my new Bonnie and Clyde mysteries a try. BURDEN OF POOF is available now!

Thank you, again, for popping by this stop on my blog tour and checking out my post!

🦁 Book Blurb:

Pastor and bestselling author Levi Lusko is known for making tough topics accessible while drawing his readers toward a richer spiritual life. In his first children’s devotional for ages 6 to 10, Levi tackles real issues our kids face with a lighthearted and approachable tone. Kids are equipped to approach both fun moments and tough times with their hearts set on God’s faithfulness with the help of fascinating stories and facts, eye-catching art, Bible verses, prayers, and simple action steps.

This 90-day devotional covers highly relevant topics such as:

facing fears about school and friendships;having courage to try something new;handling new challenges, past disappointments, and grief;dealing with peer pressure and bullying; and
understanding how we each fit into God’s great story

As a parent and pastor, Levi is able to address real-life situations with compassion, grace, and biblical authenticity. Roar Like a Lion is a great way to spark discussion with your kids on meaningful topics and get them in the habit of reading a biblically-based devotional.

Offering practical approaches to faith in everyday life, Roar Like a Lion will inspire your kids to nurture their personal faith in a God strong enough to protect and guide them as they run toward the roar during the challenges in their lives.

🦁 Popular author and pastor Levi Lusko brings key ideas from his bestselling book, Through the Eyes of a Lion, into these motivating devotions for kids, encouraging them to move toward their everyday challenges with powerful, God-inspired bravery. 🦁 Kids are wrestling with tough issues these days—peer pressure, purpose, unexpected change or loss, and wondering where their faith fits in with it all. Roar Like a Lion encourages your kids to “run toward the roar” as they face their fears, knowing that God is with them every step of the way.  🦁📙🦁📙🦁📙🦁📙🦁📙🦁

 🦁 MY REVIEW:

An inspirational guide for children and adults alike! I was looking forward to reading this devotional because I like to read and review non-fiction middle-grade books as much as I enjoy reading fiction written for that age group. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I related much more to this book than I ever imagined I would since I am way past the age of ten! Each of the devotionals is titled with a brief, catchy phrase such as, IDK is OK, Courage in the Dark, What Are You Waiting For?, and Not-So-Cool Schooldays. Each devotional includes a Bible verse; an applicable narrative from the author; a sidebar entitled, Did You Know?; and a brief prayer which directly applies to the theme of the devotional.
The tone of the book is very warm and welcoming. Readers are encouraged to seek out God and are given specific actions to take to share their faith with others, live the life God wants them to live, and to treat themselves and others with kindness.
The illustrations are exceptional, and I feel that the artist has done a fantastic job of conveying the author's words in visual form. One fun aspect of the book is that the illustrator hid twenty 'anchors' throughout the book. At the beginning of the book readers are encouraged to search for anchors. The key to where the anchors are hidden is given at the end of the book.
Highly-recommended to families, church groups, church libraries, and others who will enjoy taking an inspirational journey through some of life's challenges through the use of solid Biblical references, current examples, and prayer.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through JustRead Publicity Tours. All of my thoughts and opinions expressed here are solely my own.
