Seven-year-old Yonie is a wondernose because he can't keep his nose out of anything and is always getting into trouble. But that night a bad storm brings trouble--the kind that not even a full-grown man could handle easily. A Caldecott Honor Book. Illustrations. 48 pp. Ages 7-11. Original Publication:  1944.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR {from Bookology Magazine website @ https://www.bookologymagazine.com/ }:

Marguerite (Lofft) de Angeli was born on March 14, 1889 in Lapeer, Michigan. Her father was a photographer and her grandfather was the town’s blacksmith. At the age of 13, her family moved to Philadelphia, where Marguerite’s artistic inclinations were encouraged. She was interested in singing, writing, and drawing, seemingly heading toward a career as a professional singer. When she met John de Angeli, he encouraged her to think of motherhood as her career, to which she agreed. The couple had five children.

When her first three were a bit older, Marguerite began to study with her next-door neighbor, an illustrator, eventually publishing in Country Gentleman magazine and illustrating books for other authors.

In 1935, she first published books she had both written and illustrated. Her first books were Ted and Nina Go to the Grocery Store and Ted and Nina Have a Happy Rainy Day. Her immensely popular books often dealt with the ordinary lives of immigrant children.

She was awarded the Newbery Medal in 1950 for The Door in the Wall, the story of a young disabled boy who saves a besieged castle in the thirteenth century. De Angeli received a Newbery honor in 1956 for The Black Fox of Lome. Yonie Wondernose won a Caldecott honor in 1945. That book and Henner’s Lydia were two notable stories about Amish children. In 1946, de Angeli broke literary ground by publishing Bright April, a story of a black girl and racial prejudice.

She died in 1987.

 MY REVIEW:

I came upon this book in our local library system's online catalog quite by accident recently. I read a lot of Amish fiction and non-fiction from the Adult Collection. I finished a search of those genres for adults and decided to browse for something new in the Children's Collection. I narrowed the search to the Children's Collection without changing the subject (Amish). When this book came up I knew I wanted to read it because of my interest in Amish fiction and non-fiction and because historical fiction is my favorite genre of children's and adult books. I noticed on the Amazon listing for this book that the age range is 5-6. The Goodreads age range is 7-11. I would place the age range at 7-10. The story begins with background information about seven-year-old, 'Yonie', a Pennsylvania Dutch boy whose full name is Jonathan. His father nicknamed him 'Yonie Wondernose' because the boy is so curious. Yonie just had to know about every little thing and what was happening around him.  Yonie's family lives on a farm in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. His grandmother, Granny, lives with the family. Yonie has three sisters. One afternoon Pop and Mom and two of Yonie's sisters leave to go on an overnight visit. Granny, Yonie, and little sister, Nancy, are left to take care of the farm. The story continues with a narrative about all of the chores Yonie and his Granny and even little Nancy perform to take care of the animals and the farm while the rest of the family is away. Feeding and watering the horses, bull, pigs, cows, mama cat and her kittens, and the chickens takes a lot of time and energy. By the time he is finished with the chores, Yonie is hot and tired. He takes a dip in the creek on the property.
Young readers will enjoy what happens when Yonie locks the door of the chicken coop without looking inside first! Later in the evening a thunderstorm helps to break the heat outside, but it soon creates chaos at the farm when lightning strikes the barn. Yonie flies out of bed, gets dressed, and heads toward the barn. His father is counting on him to take care of the animals. The barn is on fire and quickly fills with heavy smoke. A flock of pigeons who lived in the cupola of the barn fly out, and the mama cat with her kittens escape easily.  Granny helps Yonie release the horses and cows from the barn. While she tends to the animals, she sends him to let the chickens out of their coop. Once he is finished with that task, he is told to release the bull.  Before Yonie can release the bull, he is distracted by the bright red fire engine that is coming down the road and the wagons filled with their neighbors who have come to help fight the fire. Momentarily, Yonie forgets that Little Nancy is still asleep in the house and the bull is still in the barn.  Yonie eventually 'hears' his father's voice yell, 'Wondernose'! He headed for the bull's pen and led him to safety. The bull's back was burned by a smoldering timber, so Yonie ran to the house to get some apple butter to soothe the angry bull. As he approaches the house, Yonie finds that a neighbor picked up Yonie's father and drove him home. When Pop learned how Yonie saved the animals, he gave him one of the newborn piglets and a calf to call his own. He also told Yonie that since he was a man now, he would be able to guide their two work horses when they were plowing the fields during planting season. This was a reward and an opportunity that Yonie had been waiting to receive for a long time.
I really enjoyed this old-fashioned story. The artwork is delightful; some of the illustrations are pencil/charcoal and some are colorful and look like the front cover. Highly-recommended!  🐂🐄🐈🐎🐓🐖🐂🐄🐈🐎🐓🐖

Whitney Dagner is your tour guide to a Pacific paradise that’s to die for—only to find it’s a place people are also willing to kill for—in Gabby Allan’s 'Much Ado About Nauticaling,' first in the 'Whit and Whiskers' Mystery series.

After far too many years in the Los Angeles corporate world, Whitney Dagner has come home to Santa Catalina Island off the California coast to help her brother Nick run Nautically Yours, the family tourism business. Between gift shop shifts selling all manner of T-shirts and tchotchkes and keeping her feline Whiskers in fine fettle, she pilots the Sea Bounder, a glass bottom boat showing tourists the underwater sights of aquatic plants, marine life—and a murder victim?

The self-proclaimed “Master of the Island,” Jules Tisdale was a wealthy man with business interests throughout Catalina who was about to be honored as Person of the Year before someone strangled him with his own tie and tossed his body into the water. That someone appears to be Nick, who had a raw deal from Jules and no alibi the night of his murder. To clear her brother’s name, Whit will have to investigate Jules’ shady associates and not exactly grief-stricken family members—with the unwelcome help of Felix Ramirez, police diver and Whit’s ex-boyfriend who’s looking to rekindle their relationship.

Good morning, Blog Readers! I’m so thrilled to be here with you today to share my new series.

I’m Gabby Allan (also Misty Simon) and I write Rom Cozies for Kensington. They’re a wonderful mix of cozy mystery and rom com. I love this concept and am so thankful for the opportunity to share this new series with you!

Small towns and the people that inhabit them fascinate me. I’ve lived in bigger cities, but my heart has always been in small town locales. What’s not to love about being in a place where a lot of people know your name and you can never get away with anything without someone telling your grandparents? If I eat too many whoopee pies or don’t wave to my great aunt while she’s walking and I’m trying to drive, my mom gets a call. If I am out to dinner, I might run into ten people I know and stop at each table to catch up really quickly and end up eating an hour later than I had planned.

But I also have the circle of women who know me enough to ask me how I’m doing and really listen to an answer that isn’t “fine.” Or an aunt who will drop by with snickerdoodles because she knows how much I love then and she just made a fresh batch with me in mind.

So when I’m writing my cozies, I try to pull all those things in to the story world. This time, though, we’re on an island in the Pacific Ocean where my intrepid sleuth Whit has recently returned to the place she used to stay for the summer to help her brother run a glass bottom boat company. She’s choosing to leave her corporate life on the mainland and live the island life. She’s doing a good job, too, until a dead body floats under the boat and then we have issues. Addin some complications, like her brother having recently fought with the dead guy and then taking off to hide, and Whit is going to have to figure out whodunnit before her brother gets tossed in jail.

I love making the whole family a part of each mystery. I love delving into the community that would live on an island that hosts many tourists but under four-thousand permanent residents. They’re driving golf carts, working jobs, and making a life for themselves.

The possibilities are endless in a town where you’re surrounded by family and friends of the family and relationships that go back for generations, good and bad. But when there is the potential for not being able to just go to another state and you’d have to have a boat or plane to escape, you have even more fun to work with. And I did.

I love playing with the concept of what it means to be a part of a community like that. The wonderful parts where you never feel totally alone. At any given moment you could put out a hand and someone will take it and give you a huge helping of love and support, or a slap upside the head to get you back on the right track.

And bringing that into the books, with all the mess of relationships and secrets and loyalties and families is one of the true joys of writing about a small town in a small town. I never run out of ideas on how to make my main character, Whit’s, life difficult. I love pitting her against an ex-boyfriend she thought she’d left behind. And having her best friend on island with her, having to deal with her brother and her grandparents, and living in a place where everyone knows everyone. It has been an absolute blast to have her talk with her cat Whiskers about what to do next and to have pretty much the whole cast expecting her to find clues instead of telling her to keep her nose out of it.

I hope you’ll join me as we dive into the world of Whit and Whiskers, where murder doesn’t happen often, but when it does Whit might just have to save the day. I’m pretty sure she’s up to it.

MY REVIEW:

As you may have noticed from the number of S.T.E.A.M. books I review for my Marvelous Middle-Grade Monday posts, I enjoy reading crafting, sewing, cooking, etc., books written with children or 'family time' in mind. Today's feature, 'The Grown-Up's Guide to Crafting With Kids' by Author Vicki Manning, is one of my favorite books in this genre because it is unique in one important and special way . . . This author truly enjoys spending time with her own children creating interesting projects and guiding them through the world of creativity with patience and enthusiasm. The format of this book is reader-friendly. The color photos of the projects and stepped-out instructions are not tiny thumbnails. Many nearly fill the page with others filling one-half or one-quarter of the page. The book begins with an overview of sourcing materials, which tools and materials to use, how to remain safe while crafting, and how to keep from making messes on your furniture, etc. Another element of this book I like is the author's emphasis on using items found in nature--twigs, sticks, leaves, shells, rocks, feathers, etc.--and common recyclables found around the home--jars, plastic bottles, paper towel and toilet paper rolls, cardboard, cereal boxes, and magazine pictures and illustrations from well-used books. This author is extremely resourceful in using these types of 'found' objects so that she has more funds in her budget to buy yarn, paints, felt, beads, clay, buttons, etc.
My favorite project in this book is the 'Sun-Printed Banner' using a dish towel, natural items, acrylic paints, etc. to make a photographic sun print or 'cyanotype' which can then be mounted on dowels and displayed on the wall. Fun and beautiful!
I also thought the Rainbow Leaf Garland and Wreath were clever and colorful pieces of home decor that children will enjoy sharing with others. Other awesome projects include the 'Papier-Mache Rocket', the cereal box 'Castle', the 'Sock Bunny' and 'Sock Octopus', and the 'No-Sew Felt Flowers'.
Highly-recommended for families, teachers, librarians, scout/camp leaders, church group leaders, youth group leaders, and anyone who wants to make some fun crafts for gifts or home decor!
I borrowed this book from the 'New Arrivals' shelf at our local public library.  🧶🚀🐚✏🤖🧶🚀🐚✏🤖

ABOUT THE BOOK  A Future to Fight For

Title:  A Future to Fight For
Series:  Bliss, Texas
Author:  Mindy Obenhaus
Publisher:  Love Inspired
Release Date:  August 1, 2021
Genre:  Inspirational Contemporary Romance

All their dreams will come true…  if they can work together.
Widow Paisley Wainwright’s so close to taking her Texas event-planning business to the next level by turning Renwick Castle into a wedding venue. Only one thing stands in the way: her longtime rival, Crockett Devereaux, who wants the building to become a museum. When the building’s owners insist they collaborate to implement both plans, can Paisley and Crockett put their differences aside…and fight for their dreams together? 🐎🐴💓 🐎🐴💓 🐎🐴💓

EXCERPT:

He studied the remarkable woman across from him. “Paisley, I believe I owe you an apology.”

“For what?”

Still holding her hand, he stood, rounded the table and pulled her to her feet. “For underestimating you. You are a strong woman, stronger than most men. Myself included.”

“I highly doubt that.”

“I don’t. The fact that you were able to move past your pain and start a new life here in Bliss, all the while holding tight to your faith, is something to be admired. It makes me ashamed of how I treated you in the past.”

“Now who’s pitying me?”

“Paisley, the only pitiful one here is me.” It really bugged him, the way his hackles used to go up whenever he was around her.

“That’s not true. You’re a good man.” She released his hand and moved toward the window. “This rain isn’t going to let up anytime soon. What do we do about the castle?”

“We wait. It may be a few days before we can get back in there.”

Yawning, she nodded. “I think I need a nap.”

At least her mood seemed to have improved, so he wouldn’t have to worry about leaving her while she was down. Problem was, he didn’t want to go. Like someone who’d just uncovered a rare treasure, he wanted to stay and admire it.

And that was a problem he’d never anticipated.

~ MARVELOUS MIDDLE-GRADE MONDAY SOCIAL STUDIES & QUILT-MAKING NON-FICTIONFEATURE ~ --  'THE ALL-TOGETHER QUILT'  -- AUTHOR & ILLUSTRATOR LIZZY ROCKWELL ▨▩▦▥▤ ▨▩▦▥▤ ▨▩▦▥▤

  ▨▩▦▥▤ ▨▩▦▥▤ ▨▩▦▥▤

ABOUT THE BOOK {from Goodreads}:

Quilters and crafters rejoice! This story of a community coming together to make a quilt is a heartwarming celebration of creativity and teamwork.

The kids and grown-ups at a community center begin with lots of colorful fabrics and an idea. Then step by step they make that idea a reality. They design, cut, stitch, layer, and quilt. It's the work of many hands, many hours, and many stories. And the result is something warm and wonderful they all can share.

Lizzy Rockwell is the artistic director and organizing force behind the Norwalk Community Quilt Project: Peace by Piece, and this book is inspired by all the people who have gathered over the years to teach and learn and to make something beautiful together.

MY REVIEW:

As a quilter, I was thrilled when I found this 2020 release in the children's collection of our library's catalog. The cover art is so warm and welcoming with the diverse group of children and an adult wearing smiles while spending time together working on a quilt all-together that it prompts readers to open the book and dive in.
The book tells the story based on the author/illustrator's real life, as explained in the back matter after the story. The 'Peace by Piece' quilting group, which was founded in 2008, meets two afternoons a week to work on quilts which they then hang in public places such as public libraries, community colleges, and children's museums.
This inspirational group is filled with diverse people of several different age groups who contribute their time and skills to make something meaningful together.
Throughout the story, the full-sized, detailed illustrations lead readers through the making of a quilt. Each step is highlighted in text and illustrations, from cutting the fabric, sewing the quilt blocks, assembling the quilt, making a sandwich of the quilt top/batting/backing, hand-quilting the three layers, and adding the binding.
As a bonus, the back matter includes diagrams of nine 'Classic Quilt Blocks' and information about the fabrics used to make the quilt in the book.
This is one of my favorite quilt books for children! Highly-recommended for families, classrooms, youth groups/scout groups, libraries, plus anyone who wants to learn to make a basic quilt from start to finish.

Welcome to Leavensport, Ohio, where DEATH takes a DELICIOUS turn!

Undercover in Leavensport

Sometimes I wish I’d never met Jackson Nestle, my unscrupulous ex-husband who is always tied to nefarious business. Had I not met him, then I’d never end up in Leavensport, Ohio, with people I feel closer to than I do with my family.

My name was Natalia Nestle when I was married to Jackson. The first few years were wonderful until I overheard bits and pieces of conversations that made me realize my husband’s import/export business was more than just coffee beans.

There’s a lot of things that happened for me to get to a place to be able to divorce him, and that will all come up later—I’ve promised to spill it all to Jolie and Ava, who run Cast Iron Creations—two women I feel are like sisters to me.

Long story short, I ended up in witness protection and was there for years. I realized my ex was beyond intelligent, and he knows how to cover his tracks. The Feds wanted me to divorce him so I could testify against him. It turned out Jackson had people ready to be his fall guys, and they took prison time for him.

Three years into witness protection, I realized that if I didn’t take action, I’d be in this program for the rest of my life, and trust me when I tell you it’s no picnic. I’ve watched all the shows and movies that romanticize it, and that’s all it is—a lot of hype.

I had to change my appearance, name, get a new social security number, relocate, and agree never to see or speak to anyone I knew as Natalia. Once that was taken care of, I had to find a job. I had married Jackson at age eighteen and never worked. My high school diploma and background of no work landed me retail and restaurant jobs the first few years in my new residence. I worked my way up to manager when the Feds told me I had to relocate yet again due to one of the men getting out of prison, and someone found out information about where I was hiding.

That was terrifying. I had to change appearances yet again, get a new name and another new social security number, and move. I’d just met people and found some friends, which, if I’m honest, that is the worst part of witness protection—losing all those you love. It’s lonely. So, being told I had to leave and never speak to these new friends again—that was all I could take.

That brings me to where I am now—in Leavensport, Ohio as Lia—NOT in witsec anymore at this time. Did I mention I could leave anytime but had to sign what felt like a gagillion papers saying that I understood the risk I was taking?

Luckily, I truly believe that we will catch Jackson this time, and he will be put away for good. Jolie and Ava don’t seem to fear him, and so far, he doesn’t know I’m around. While I’m still in hiding, it’s such a relief that others know my background and my hope for the future is that I can Natalia again, see my family, and maybe find a good man to spend my life with.

Welcome to Leavensport, Ohio, where DEATH takes a DELICIOUS turn!

In this series debut perfect for fans of Jenn McKinlay and Miranda James, Rain Wilmot must discover the killer, before the book closes on her life.

Rain Wilmot has just returned to her family's waterfront log cabin in Lofty Pines, Wisconsin after the untimely death of her husband. The cabin is peaceful compared to Rain's corporate job and comes with an informal library that Rain's mother, Willow, used to run. But as Rain prepares for the re-opening of the library, all hopes for a peaceful life are shattered when she discovers the body of Thornton Hughes, a real estate buyer, on the premises.

The community of Lofty Pines starts pointing fingers at Willow, since she has been unusually absent from the library this summer. A fishy rumor surfaces when Rain learns that Willow had been spending a lot of time with Thornton. The town even thought they were having an affair.

While theories swirl about Thornton's death, Rain takes it upon herself to solve the case to exonerate her mother. As more clues surface, Rain will have to piece together the mystery. But if she isn't careful, she may be the next to end up dead in the water in Murder at the Lakeside Library, the first in Holly Danvers' new Lakeside Library mysteries.
